And after me yesterday thinking, draw, no one's managed any wickets. Thought they had swapped venues for the second innings!

Great work by the bowlers there. Now the batsmen must back it up, outright win is a great start to the season.

Wow an awesome effort that is like 8/22 spectacular! But don't get ahead of ourselves, we are likely to lose this one now! Fergo in very good form and hopefully Cosgrove can make a majestic century.
 
My brain's still trying to process the declaration.

I mean... you're 80 runs in deficit and 4 wickets down. Why not look to bat more aggressively or even go kamikaze style swinging at every ball. You're going to have to score those runs some time, why not do it in the relative comfort of 4/350?

Botha must be some kind of genius seer. He's operating on that next next level of mind game.
 
Hughes would replace Ronnie IMO. Better bat and we dont need McDonald to bowl these days. Sayers has to be close to a call up, consistently gets wickets on the least friendly track for bowlers in the country. Has McGrath pace and great consistency.

As for the early dec, given there's no first innings points these days it was a ballsy but smart move. Back our guys in to knock them over knowing Queensland would push for points too.

I guess we wanted QLD to be able to declare as early as possible in the 3rd innings.

She's a different game without first innings points. Last year, Qld would have banked the first innings points, leaving us with little in the match to play for, apart from saving it.

This year, the only points are on offer for a win. Smart play by Botha to back the bowlers in.

Not cossie, his performance this game has been surprisingly very steady. McDonald also I think could be good for us in the near term. Botha is probably the one in the top 6 who needs to do more.

They had one good partnership where it looked like they would get to take charge with when any declaration happened. After Forrest got out early today none of the QLD batsmen who came in played with any confidence, Sayers and Zampa were magnificent.

Yeah I get that first innings points aren't on offer but if you're only 4 down and still trail, why not try to hit every ball to the boundary until you're all out rather than declare?

I get that it's ballsy, catches the other team by surprise and Botha looks like a genius now that we're about to win. But I still don't see a reason for not going the slog other than maybe protecting the batters' average/confidence.

Time could be an issue, seeing they were gambling on getting qld out early.

I get that but they had to score at least 80 more anyway to win. Isn't it easier to score runs with 4/350 in the first innings than starting at 0/0 in the second?

Maybe 8/22 is a sign that Qld was as thrown off as I am. :p

By declaring, Botha kept Queensland interested in the game. He gave them motivation bat and declare, giving both teams a chance of winning. If Botha hadn't declared and left Qld in the field for longer, then he would have effectively taken the outright result off the table, leaving only the draw (and the batting bonus points) on offer. He certainly couldn't bank on Qld collapsing, losing 8/22, given how the way the batsmen had dominated the 1st innings for both teams.
