With the eventual rise and rise of Mayes and Aish, who here thinks Jack Redden will remain a favoured midfielder at the Lions? I know he is a strong tackler and jags the odd goal, but compare him to players of similar age, I don't think he has done enough.

Tell me that I'm mad, but I think that Redden should be up there with Rockliff or Rich.

Jack Redden to me is not too dissimilar to what Nigel Lappin was compared to Voss, Akermanis and Black in that his unheralded work went some way to allowing those around him to stand out. IMO, Redden has done that for the likes of Rockliff and Rich.

I do.

Rockliff and Rich aren't Brownlow medalists. They are B+ graders who occasionally play an A grade game.

Still doesn't detract from Redden's ability and what he contributes to the team. I seriously think you are underestimating his pressure and tackling and 1%'s that are just first rate and up there with the best in the competition.

Even if Reddo has a quiet game he still usually tops the team in tackles and general immeasurable pressure.

He'll be a lock in the 22 until he's injured.

I don't watch a hell of a lot of Sydney games but is he our Bolton/O'Keeffe type player? (It may be the 1st retired Bolton I am thinking of). I am undecided about Reddens potential though, he was even with Rocky at one point but he has seemed to stop adding strings to his bow while Tommy has kept adding. He is still one of the 1st picked every week though.

This is my opinion of him. I expected him to be a more explosive player.

I think it's a fair question. No doubt he is extremely consistent week in week and works hard for the team. While being consistent has he lifted his game much in the last 1 -2 years?

I'd love to see the pill in his hands a bit more, that's probably my only knock on him.

Will the emergence of our younger, slicker players relegate Redden as a depth mid?

The strength of Redden is that game after game after game you sit back and wonder what he did and where he was the whole time.

Then you see the stat sheet.

Redden and his type of no nonsense hard nosed hard working players are the reason other players look good. The question isnt whether he'll be good enough to stay in the team it will be where can we find another just like him.

Give me your opinion with some critical thinking. What makes Redden a better player than say Zorko?
Looking purely at Merrett-Murray medal tally (googled it.. not 100% sure if its right):2010 - 5th2011 - 3rd2012 - = 4th2013 - 3rdIf i ever wrote a dictionary id have a picture of him next to consistency...Probably not as much wow factor as zorko/rich, or the stats like rockliff.. but plays his role well as a defensive midfielder..ily jacky

Perhaps if more players in our team did the hard stuff, he might get more opportunity with the ball.

Depends on how he goes this year. Last year he levelled off rather than showing the steady improvement that had been his hallmark previously. I think it was a consolidation year though and he is ready to push on again...

I hope he can start being a match winner on more occasions because he has shown flashes of it, but if he has levelled out and this is the way the rest of his career plays out I won't be disappointed either.

IMO He would be a starting mid for any team in the comp already.

Interesting thread so far. Has nothing on the 2000 reply vent thread though.

One of the best if not best tacklers in the League. That counts for a lot, how many people can tackle Ablett like he can?
