Reef turning from a forward to a defender would be a great move if it works. Can he be the Murphy replacement?

I remember Peter McCormack successfully transitioning from full forward to full back during the Hafey years. Hope Reef's move is as successful.

Liam Jones was a massive whipping boy for the Dogs but has turned into a quality defender for them and the scum in the past. Reef has all the tools to do the same

Jones, Lobb, Sicily, Himmelberg, Mitch Mcgovern, Lonergan are a few that come to mind of talented players who just couldn't translate their skills up forward as well as they can down back.

I'm cautiously optimistic though we're so far into preseason now that if McRae and co. didn't think he was a good fit, we'd be seeing Frampton or Dean featuring more in drills by now.

Not sure about everyone else though Reef is the #1 reason I'm keen to watch our hit outs vs Brisbane and GC.

Ben Reid also went from a flaky Key Forward with a bad set of the yips in front of goal to an AA CHB/ In more recent times, Darcy More started his career as a forward but again became an AA KPB.

Reef doesn't need to suddenly become an AA KPD, If he can just hold down a KPD spot and release Moore back to his best form, he'll have more than done his job.

Billy Picken was another forward turned into a gun defender.
Bill could get it up forward....he just couldn't kick straight.

I am really looking forward to see how Reef develops this year. I have always thought he had huge potential, and was so glad that we retained him.

He will definitely get his chance this year. We all know that it's 2025 or never for Reef. Immense pressure for this young man. I wish him all the very best.

It is in the furnace that steel is produced. That's where he is now.

Very shocked to see people being critical of Reef on here after having watched the match sim - I didn't think he did too much wrong. If people are blaming him for his opponent taking marks, they might want to point the finger a little higher up the field to the witches hats in the middle.

You basically can't play defense effectively if there's no pressure on the midfield - I don't care if he's Nathan Murphy at his best, Presti, or Jack bloody Regan - Nobody can stop a forward receiving from a midfielder who's got all day to kick it in.

If you just look at the 50/50s that he actually had a chance in, I feel like he did pretty well, and he got a bit of ball up the field too.

I felt a lot better about Reef's performance that Frampton's or Dean's.

I thought he did pretty well, seemed to have a connection with Moore that Frampton and Dean struggled to. And he worked himself into the game nicely.
Had 11 disposals and 4 spoils in a game that only had 2x 25 min halves.

Presti was a CHF.
Damn! I was scrolling down seeing all the other names people were mentioning thinking "I can't believe I am going to be able to bring up Presti! The best example of a forward turning into a gun defender!". And in stroll you with your post... :(

Did anyone actually see Presti play forward?

Reef is a watch and see for me, I think he’s a chance but I don’t think success is just happening, he needs time to build. If he is going to make it, there will be ups and downs.

I reckon he will wear the 26 with pride.
Set for a big year.

From the start of pre-season, just has that vibe about him. That he is about to take this opportunity by the scruff of the neck. A real determination.

I remember when Presti first started, his first couple of years I was so scathing. I thought he was useless.
In my mind I was sure he wasn’t going to cut it.
How wrong I was.
I hope Reef can do the same, although I’m not as scathing on him. As yet.
Players can win you over sometimes.
Possum was another one…

Reef was a midfielder in junior footy? I thought I remember him being talked about as a big body midfielder.

He has obviously kept growing so now just tall enough to be key position, but if you haven’t played key forward or back growing up you won’t all of a sudden become a great key tall at AFL level. He’s going to need time.

I was at Victoria Park one day when Peter McCormack was playing full forward. He was terrible, had no idea. He ended up a great Full Back

McCormack is a very underrated player in our club's history. He played full back for many of our contending years and was rarely badly beaten.

I remember watching Peter Moore's first game in the seconds. All of us watching him thought he was totally useless. I hope I'm similarly wrong about Reef. I know he played as a defender as a junior for a while, and yes, he's very quick, but I'm not sold on his decision making abilities, or for his disposal under pressure for that matter. Time will tell. Frampton will be waiting in the wings.

Peter Moore never looked useless.
