It’ll be interesting to see how Reef runs out a game. He certainly couldn’t do it when he had to put out repeat efforts in the forward line. Might not be as much of an issue playing on a kpf.

His endurance is not ah issue this preseason apparently is the word out of the club
Whether it’s improved or whether it’s not needed as much with this role, not sure. Although he has improved his endurance from what I’ve seen.

Markov's return to form makes it interesting though. in terms of the practice match, do we choose Maynard to replace Reef's role or Markov's role? Comes down to how well Reef can impact aerial contests, I think.
Markov never had a particular role even during his supposed good year in 2023, right now his competition is either Prker or Ryan. Goes without saying Bruzzy is an automatic in while it's either Reef or Frampton.

I went to that practice match and Markov was OK but his decision making and disposal were very average. It might come down to whether or not they have a player in mind for Markov to stop. Someone will have to play on Cadman also and Reef would be a better choice. They will both play because Houston is out but when he returns, Markov could miss out. Reef started a bit shaky but by the end of the game he was pretty good. Good to have selection dilemmas
The issue is so is Reef’s so unless he offers something in the air he won’t be selected over Markov who is a better runner and has the credits in the bank.

That Richmond practice match posed more questions than giving answers to me. Reef was OK, but looked to be playing like a general defender more than a tall and we didn't look as solid when they kicked long to a position as we should have against those blokes - didn't have that 2022/2023 feel of solidity.
2022 solidarity is a myth. People seem to forget we actively pursued Frampton at the end of 2022 as a supposedly better option than Murphy. Murph didn’t morph in to the really solid key defender that we loved until 2023.

I thought we were really strong when the ball was kicked long into defence in 2022. Did get cut up by Swans in the first half of the prelim though.

Reef isn’t being selected as a general defender though he’s being selected as a key. I doubt we go willingly in to any game with Moore as our only tall above 190cm unless our opponent is only running with 1 key forward.

We consistently struggled against any teams with a big bodied tall. There were calls all year that we needed to find a bigger player than Murphy for that task and the coaches obviously agreed given the recruitment of Frampton.
Nobody expected Murphy’s game to evolve to a level that allowed him to take on that task. It’s the reason I firmly believe we should be giving Reef plenty of time to settle in to the role before declaring what he is and isn’t capable of.

There's no doubt that we like to play 3 talls. However for much of 2023, Bruzzy was one of the 3 - with Howe out and then Murphy out for the last 3 quarters of the GF.

In terms of Reef, the question is are we better off with him playing as a tall - or Bruzzy and an extra general defender. Or Frampton/Dean as a tall. God knows until we see Reef in aerial contests in the regular season.

The thing is Reef and our hopes for him should realistically be Murphy 2022 - a solid cog who gets a straight forward defensive role - which would be our 2022 aerial defence, which is fine by me, as I thought we were good at cutting off long kicks.

The aerial contest killer that Murphy was in 2023 is very very wishful for Reef in terms of this year - I'd say it's an unrealistic wish.

I reckon they're going to give Reef as much opportunity as possible to show what he can do. It appears he's favoured over Frampton and Dean atm. It's really hard to know how Reef will go this year because pre season footy is more or less just training. They are pinning their hopes on Reef coming good because we really need a good key defender coming through. It's a big watch because up until this year, Reef has been underwhelming

The bolded is exactly why he’s got to offer more in the air and the latter are the exact conditions Markov made forced his way into the side.

What has already been stated, but to me, not emphasised enough, is that Murphy is teaching the 'replacements' to play the role.
To quote in a kiwi accent...
"Et won't heppen overnight, but et wool heppen"..

I hope you don;t hold a grudge, Ritchie. Because to me, a grudge is nothing more than a place to park you car.....
Well for stoorters you could have the borstard boored from this poort of the broadcoorst area. “I’m sorry what was that Tony?”

I wish I had my keys with me.

First time I’ve seen him live in his new role.
I thought he did well.
Timed leaving his opponent well and gave us some run with good disposal too.
Had a good dual with Rioli who’s smart with his body use.
They embraced each other and had a good chat after the game.

The fact that he survived the game day thread without blemish speaks for itself. He finally feels like he belongs
