Reilly is redefining himself as a tagger:

"Craigy mentioned tagging to me and said it was a possibility," Reilly said. "I did a little bit of tagging when I first came over [to Adelaide] just helping out off the bench. I hadn’t really done it for any length of time, but I thought I should grab the opportunity with both hands and make the most of it.

Reilly has been studying tapes of two of the league’s most attacking stoppers, Geelong’s Cameron Ling and Hawthorn’s Brad Sewell, and the Crows are hopeful the long-kicking onballer can develop into a similar-type of modern-day tagger.

It sounds like a good idea to me, I don't think he'll ever make it in our midfield now. The only question I have is; what's his tank like?

Not sure what his tank is like, but he has had a full preseason i think, so it should be good enough. In 2007 i remember him playing on the inside a bit and he was pretty good at dishing out the handball and breaking away from packs so as long as he can keep pressure on an opponent whilst doing so I think he could be a very good tagger. My only worries is if his opponent goes forward, he gets a bit lost down back at times and his decision making under pressure can be suspect.

His tank is fine. Trains as a midifelder and runs a 3km time trial in around 10mins flat. Usually comes top 5 in the club.

However, I worry about his pace for the tagging role. Yes not all taggers are quick, but I have studied him as he used to be one of my favourite players. Trust me he is exceptionally slow for a midfielder particularly in the last 2 years. Definitely slower than Doughty and Shirley. Cameron Ling is probably the only other tagger that would be as slow as radar, but he does a great job. So its not impossible just a concern. If Judd or Ablett are on the move against radar it could get messy.

Definitely worth a crack though. Would certainly be better than Shirley once he has the ball.

Would still rather Doughty then Sloane before reilly.

Seems an odd choice especially with his pace as you've said, basically just his last chance to make something of his career. He always seemed to get an injury just when he was coming good.

Don't mind the idea, not because he leaps out as a tight-checking, super-disciplined human glove but simply because sometimes a change is as good as a holiday.

He hasn't really progressed in the last four seasons. Has been treading water. Time do something different. Anything.

What a race that would be. Like seeing who can whisper the loudest.

Doughty is not what I would call slow. In fact he is reasonably zippy.

Interesting that some think Reilly has slowed. When he first came on the scene he didn't appear to be slow at all.

I agree, I always thought Reilly had descent pace, well atleast more than Shirley or Doughty. Never seen him as a slow midfielder.

One thing that worried me about Reilly as a tagger is that his disposal is very good, except when he's under close body pressure. His best work is always as a receiver 80m out who then places the ball to perfection to a forward's advantage. Receiving the ball next to a good player and trying to do anything with it? Generally doesn't go so well.

At least he has quick hands. Perhaps encouraging him to handball more often in close (by having good players near him) will help him.

makes you wonder why we got rid of shirely if we were really serious about a flag this year.

Well remember we still have Doughty who is a proven tagger. Probably equal to Shirley defensively but much more accomplished offensively. Training Reilly in the tagging role is to provide depth and options in that area. They're probably hoping Reilly can end up being even better than Dogga (although I doubt it).

We do need another option (Reilly, Sloane, Schmidt whoever) because dogga wont be around for too much longer.

I don't know. Sometimes taggers are the ones who find themselves in the most space, as the opposition aren't spending any of their time trying to man up on them to stop them getting the ball plus their direct opponent is trying to get as far away from them as possible!

It's one of the reason Kane Cornes gets so much of the ball.

At first I was against it but now I'm coming around especially after his late season form last year. If he does this well he should be able to finally cement his spot in this side. But with all of our injuries you would wanna impress before they all come back.

i would say in the center square doughty's ability is far less, but good point i'd forgot about him as he does work off half back as well.

Wow, Radar. Shut Ablett out of the game, Ablett only kicked that one goal when Radar was off the ground.

Gun game. Would have been good to slot that goal.
Definitely.

Is he in the middle of a Leroy Jetta-esque run at the moment with his goalkicking? I cannot remember him nailing one for ages. And he misses in exactly the same spot every single time, just off to the right.
