Reilly v Dal Santo

This has probably been done to death, but I wanted to get it off my chest.

1. What is with all the comparison ? I know they were taken 1 pick apart in 2001 and all that but, as good as he is, Dal Santo went at 13. Ie 12 times he was overlooked by other clubs. The likes of Polak, Clarke, Molan and Cole went before him, so surely it wasn't as obvious at the time as some people make it out to be ?

I remember, when we took Johncock at pick 67 I couldn' help but laughing at the previous picks :

63 - Marc Bullen
64 - Mark Gale
65 - Pass
66 - Scott Thornton.



2. Realistically, have we done pretty well with picking Reilly at pick 12 ? Considering the hit and miss nature of the draft and all the flop stories of first rounders (let alone late first rounders), I think we've done damn well.

3). In that draft, with the obvious benefit of hindsight, I think Dal Santo is probably the 4th best talent to come out of the draft, an absolute steal for the Saints.

So in any response, could someone please tell me why when mentioning Reilly, we sometimes often make mention to Dal Santo ? We don't do it in any other circumstance/AFC player do we ?

It's because we had the opportunity to take Dal Santo instead, and he has risen to greater heights (arguably) than Reilly in the early going. Imo young Brent is fast catching him these days.

Obviously. But every draft, we have the oppotunity to take every player who was drafted after that point. Reilly and NDS are two that get compared ridiculously more often than any.

Do we see people comparing Scott Thornton and Graham Johncock ? I think not....

Well that's because we're talking about a first round draft pick, whereas with Johncock it was way down the list where traditionally it's more of a shot in the dark.

Fantastic point. It's always bemused me as well. 'Life of' seems a good pick for 12th. And as many here say, the draft is far from an exact science.

I don't get it either. While Dal Santo has had the better career to date, Reilly hasn't exactly been bad and is still improving. We have made far bigger first round mistakes than this one...carey, angwin, watts, bode not s burgoyne etc etc

Yes... we have made far bigger mistakes ad this one I wouldn't call a "mistake". I am happy with Reilly and St Kilda is happy with Dal Santo. I think Reilly is much improving and is still improving. Dal Santo has the runs on board and is still IMO a better player than Reilly at this point in time. If we went to the Main board and said "compare Reilly to Dal Santo" people would just laugh at us because Dal Santo has the runs on the board and has a much bigger reputation. Lets hope Brent keeps working hard and slips under the 'radar' a bit. Reilly will be a 200 gamer+ no doubt. I think he's established himself enough to be one of the 1st picked in the crows side. Now he has to keep it up and show he can consistantly play like he is doing at the moment and build up his repuation a bit.

Just in response to your post Maximus, IMO drafting Fergus Watts was not a mistake. It may not have worked out, but it was far from a mistake.

You don't kick 10 goals in a SANFL final if you're no good. I was very unhappy that he wasn't given more gametime while he was here. Once he overcomes his injury, he has the capacity to be an absolute star.

Good thing about Reilly is that he doesn't want to go home, and is just starting to take his game to another level.

I think you may be pleasantly surprised to see this:

Brent Reilly v Nick Dal Santo

Both players having pretty much equal impact this season so far.

Add to that, that Dal Santo has an extra season and a half of experience on Reilly.

No doubt Dal Santo is the better player now, but Reilly is catching up very fast considering where he was a couple of years ago.

Would still prefer Dal Santo for his overall work around the ground and brilliance in heavy traffic, but I reckon Reilly's work at the stoppages and ball-winning ability in close is superior to that of NDS.

I agree with what your saying re Watts, its more of a semantic thing. I listed Watts as a "mistake" purely because he is a first round draft pick that is no longer at the club. Wasn't really a dig at his talent or our recruiting and more a point that we should be far more unhappy about Watts leaving the club than drafting Reilly over Dal Santo.

I have never known where this weird idea that "we missed out on Dal santo" came from.

BUT...

it is true we could have drafted Dal Santo as he was still on the board, though every man and his dog knew we wanted reilly before the draft.

consider this: how many teams in the first round would have preferred the guy they got to Reilly? It's subjective of course, but lets see...

Using a very generous view of team needs I come up with a maximum of 8 yes's in the first round. if there was any doubt, I have said yes, the drafting team prefers it's pick. so in reality the number is probably less than that.

    So at worst, we picked up the 8th best player in the first round at pick 12. argue the finer points if you will, but we have done ok. there are plenty of clubs who wish they had Reilly, especially 2007 vintage.

Speaking of the Saints good fortune in that particular draft - give or take a Clarke - after the event they managed to turn #15 and #19 into a massive 'yes' by way of trade. One negative, the other positive.

First they bizarrely handed Port #6 at the very next draft (Steven Salopek) for Barry Brooks, but then they eventually landed Jason Gram after supplying Lethal with a Good Cookery subscription.

At this stage, yeh probably.

But the gap has been, and is still being, bridged tremendously.

Dal has also played 30 more games than Brent has. Thats huge at this stage of their careers.

He looked like being a real star a couple of seasons ago, and is mighty close to having gone backwards. still a quality player, but promised more methinks.

Agreed, Dal exploded onto the scene but seemed to hit a brick wall from there. Reilly has continued to gradually improve and with more experience it's not out of the question that he could rise to challenge and/or surpass Dal in the not too distant future.
