Re: Remember this Game

This match stood for all Collingwood is about, and if I were coaching I'd use it as a motivational tool.

Exactly, the ability to win "big games" during the year, but still find ways not to win the "big one".... :(

I love the club as much as the next person, and I've loved those victories as much as the next person, but unfortunately my glass is half-empty, and I see it as a bigger frustration when we make the GF in a year like 02, and not get over the line.

History defines a club, and it takes a monumentous shift to alter a club, and everyone's view on the club both from the inside and outside. However, that said, nobody ten years ago would have thought Carlton would be on the brink of financial/on field ruin, so it is possible. I won't go into a rant about (Melbourne) club cultures and how history defines who they are, and how it affects the current clubs actions, that's another topic for another thread.

2002, we showed more guts than I ever thought we would, more than I ever hoped we would. On poper in both our games against the Lions that year, I would have had them victors by 30/40 points. Those two were probably the best games Collingwood played all year, and Brisbane were just too skillful at the end of the day. It was courageous, and I thought we played to the best of our ability that day, it was just Brisbane's "best of their ability" was 9 points better than ours. Brisbane are the strongest team that had been assembled in the last decade, and they held the dynasty of three premierships in a row before falling away. They hit their peak in 2002, and we fought tooth and nail not to be blown out of the water.

Me either, one of the most baffling decisions the club has made over the years
I think the decision came out of frustration - The club wanted to cut some of the dead wood that was keeping us from the class level of other sides.

Glenn Freeborn went; Jarrod Molloy went; Carl Steinfort went the year before.

I think the problem Betheras had is that he was lumped in with those guys in terms of what they offered. However, you can't forget that Betheras only played 9 games in 2003. It's not as though he was in our best 22 every week, but then got de-listed - He was struggling to get a game.

He was part of that group that helped us somewhat overacheive and reach those Grand Finals. If we had cut deeper in 2001, for instance, and instead of holding onto Betheras, Freeborn and Steinfort, we may never have made those Grand Finals, but at the same time, our draft picks may have been higher, and we may not have wasted a 1st round pick on Shane Woewodin.

So while you call it a baffling decision to cut him, I call it a baffling decision to keep him for as long as we did.

Disagree, VV.

Rupe was in terrific form for Williamstown all season whilst Andrew Williams floundered in the seniors. Was criminal not to:

a) Play Rupe

b) Keep him.

Getting rid of him damaged the fabric of the club.

The Qualifying final against the Lions in 2003 at the MCG was a great game too. My brother and I were on telly clapping after Buckley's brilliant goal, and then late in the game Didak had that run down the wing to goal and seal the game.

Of course, Anthony went on to get rubbed out against Port and then, despite being favourites, we proceeded to go home ten minutes into the Grand Final.

Oh damn, Whenever I seem to watch it, it freezes at the stage where Fraser gets the boundry throw in tap down to Buckley, the video just stops, I really want to see the end of it.
