None of the best singles players bother with doubles anymore, and it allows players like her to forge a career that would otherwise be beyond them.
AS for calling me a "January tennis fan" I have had a lot more to do with the sport than either of you I would guess.

I never said she wasn't smart, good luck to her for seeing a window of opportunity. What I said was that her success is an indictment on the standard of player playing doubles. I stand by that.

Actually a lot of the top ten used to play doubles (including Martina) not so long ago.

But she would be a better doubles player than a Henin-Hardenne for example. Sure these doubles players generally suck on the singles stage but the same can be said for many of the top singles players who would suck big time int he doubles game.

I just believe that the reason she concentrated on doubles was mainly because she wasn't good enough to make it in singles. I think this is supported by her stats. In 14 grand slam appearances she won just four matches, four times making the second round and never advancing further.
She tried singles and couldn't cut it.
Furthermore, a quick look at the doubles rankings shows that only three of the top 10 women in singles are in the top 50 in doubles and none are are in the top 10, mainly because the best players don't like to play both too often, for obvious reasons.
Hence, Stubbs can be successful in doubles.

Agree. She was ordinary at singles and then focused solely on doubles where she has become great at it which would probably happen if any player concentrated just on doubles. Having said that, I enjoy doubles and admire the players who play it as they don't get the glory,media coverage or the cash that singles players do. Especially mens doubles. It is a really entertaining game often moreso than singles and I take great interest in it.

Actually a lot of the top ten used to play doubles (including Martina) not so long ago.

Tha majority still do, with the exception of Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne and the Williams sisters. All the Russian chicks in the top twenty, Hantuchova and Davenport are all playing doubles atm and so is Hingis.

Agree there. Doubles can be great to watch. I just wish more of the top singles players were playing it, but that's never going to happen. Because the best aren't there, it is hard to have the same passion for it.
