Should Australia become a republic?

This was debated at my school a few years back and the Republicans lost. I myself do not support a republic. Would like to see the general concensus on BF about this issue.

No, would cost far too much for something that is, in essence, cosmetic.

This subject is going to come up alot more in coming months. The Queens getting older and a Referendum is just around the corner I think.

Absolutely.
No need to wait to the Queen expires IMO. I would like to see our nation follow Canada's example of becoming a republic, but still maintaining our links with the commonwealth as a member state.

Yes. We aren't England. We don't really need to know about what goes on over in Europe, especially when it has to do with the royal family.

As Malcom Turnbull said in the news in the last few days, it will probably be a better chance of it going through once Queen's regin is over and the throne is handed over to Prince Charles.

Personally im not really that concerned with it. Its not like the british have a heavy rule over us, in fact there really don't have that much of an influence.

In theory I'm for the idea of a republic, but it is something I find hard to get worked up about. As others have said, it is largely cosmetic, there are more important issues to be worried about.

How so? To be honest its never crossed my mind.

(1) Referendum.
(2) Change design of coins and $5 note.
(3) Delete all references to GG and replace with El Presidente.

3 to start with, none of them cheap.

PS, we lose the Queens birthday holiday as well I assume ?

1) We have federal and state elections every 3 1/2 years each, surely these are more expensive then a referendum. Its not like anyone has to spend money on ads paying the other out(although they did make ads last time but there wasn't as many as election time)

2) Money design would be a gradual change, the current notes would still be legal tender. How hard is it to whip up a new note and coin press? They do it every year when they release 'special' coins.

3) If changing a few signs outside of the GG office is to expensive then maybe we aren't ready to become a republic.

As for the the queens birthday holiday, we can replace it with a 'republic day' or something of the sort. Its not like we have the Queens birthday anywhere near her actual date of birth anyway.

Just playing devil's advocate for the sake of discussion.

Any references to royalty would have to be changed, for example let's look at the Royal Australian Air Force, all signage, letterheads, uniforms would have to be changed to remove the R, ditto the Royal Australian Navy (not sure if the army is the Royal Australian Armed Forces).

Think about the money that would cost for a start and I'll start thinking of other changes that would need to be made.

We'll just call it the 'Real Australian Air Force' :thumbsu:

i say no because i just think its good historical wise.
also would we have to get rid of everything that says "royal" and anything else related to the monarchy? how about our coins? it would be too much trouble IMO

Does this mean we'd have the same hoo ha political system as America, giving all the power to one person? No thanks. As far as I'm concerned Queen/King > Bush.
There is nothing wrong with the way we are now. A republic for Australia would be a novelty.

.

No its just the Australian regular Army(ARA),but I get your point it would cost a fortune to change all the navy and RAAF's emblems and uniforms

Its an absolute waste of time and money. We lose the queen, replace with a president, which will become another PATHETIC Labor Vs Liberal slagfest, and ceptable to corruption.

The President shouldn't be a political office. more of a figurehead.

I quite liked the President voted in by a 2/3 majority of the combination of the Senate and House of Reps. Would totally depoliticise the position as no matter who is in govt, they'll never have a 2/3 majority.

The costs of moving to a Republic are pretty insignificant really.

and do we really need our head of state to be the head of state of another country to which we have a decreasing relationship. We don't do as much trade, many people in the country have no links at all to England.

You can never erase history though, as Australia charges ahead into the future, I like to think we will keep this peice of our heritage in tact.

It has served us so well for so long, and to be honest there has never been any problems or interference at all with it.

Australia doesn't want a parliment chosen President, but who the **** would want a 'labor' or 'liberal' president. It will jsut become a shambles and more shananigans. We will just become even more American.
