Why is everyone jumping on the Rest Dale Thomas Bandwagon?

Up until last week everyone was saying he's a shoe in for the Rising Star award!

All it takes is for a Commentator to say he needs a rest and away the train goes!

If he needs a rest he can wait like everyone else - til the mid season break!

F@@k me, he shouldn't be tired, he's near the youngest on the list!

Youngest in the Senior Team anyway, by a long way!

Dale Thomas wont get the rising star, Marc Murphy will. Hes too good. Well not really theyre probably about the same but Murphy is always playing the good positions and Thomas is normally forward pocket and stuff like that so yeah no chance

maybe he will turn out to be a hack still to early to say. im sorta sick of his gay little face already. needs to bulk up badly a rest will do him good

Andrew Raines and Heath Shaw have them both covered by a long way at the moment, Shaw is getting lots of the ball, Raines is getting around 20 possies give or take per game aswell as playing on key players like rob murphy, roo and ablett to name a few

if you read the other 'rest dale thomas' thread on the board you'll realise that alot of people were calling for the pies to rest dale thomas before Friday night's game. IMO his performance on Friday merely reinforced those calls.

and the fact that he's the youngest on the list is the reason he needs to be rested, here are two reasons why:

1) He's only had one pre-season. To play 22 rounds of league footy at a consistent level most players need to have a base of fitness built over 3-4 full pre-seasons.

2) The rigours of league footy are greater than anything he's ever played in. Thomas has come from the under-18 competition where the body-on-body clashes aren't as severe, where the level of fitness isn't as great, where the speed of the game isn't anywhere near as high and where the season isn't as long.

I think he should be rested this week so that we can have him relatively fresh towards the end of the year when we need him most. Bring him back for the Sydney game and he'll be fresh and ready to go like he was at the start of the year.

no chance, heata all the way

He just looked a bit fatigued the last game, lacked the zip he showed in earlier games IMO.

Considering we were coming off 6 day breaks for a month that is understandable, especially for a skinny kid in his first year.

We have an 8 day break this week so most of the players should be fresher than against the WB, as Mick said we seemed a bit flat.

rest him?

Is that a nice way of saying he should be dropped?
AFL players dont need to be rested when they only play half a game every week.

Well a certain Nathan Buckley was 'rested' against WC, would you say he was rested or dropped? ;)

How many games did you expect Dale Thomas to play at the start of the year?
Jeez, I had him down for ten games. He has played nine out of nine. I think he has exceeded expectations for a first year player. And the way he came on in the first six rounds of the season was extraordinary! Dale set up a lot of ball for others and he kicked a couple of gems.

But, over the course of the last three weeks, he lookes very fatigued. I think this is the perfect time to give Pendlebury or Iacobucci a go in the seniors. Don't worry, Thomas will be back in the side sooner rather than later.

agree

give him an extended spell now

we have seen what daisy can produce, and he isn't having any influence on games any more

so give another youngster a run whilst we have the luxury with minimal injuries

This was a post I submitted on the Dream Team thread...

Collingwood have been Brisbane's bitches for quite some time now. Given the current circumstances, Collingwood playing better football than Brisbane & factoring in some history, Brisbane's ability to unsettle Collingwood's youngsters (Shaw, Cole, L Davis etc.) I believe Malthouse will want Thomas to be part of a Collingwood victory over Brisbane, if in fact we can manafacture one.

His coaching this year has been exceptional and bordering on perfect. Expect Thomas not to be dropped.

Can anyone see my reasoning? I am thinking long term...

There is no doubt in my mind that the kid needs a rest.
We all talk about the increased intensity and pace of the game at the elite level. How can we then expect a scrawny kid to play everygame, especially considering he only played TAC level before this?! Its a huge step up for him and he must be rested to avoid injury.
Sure you can counter this by keeping him on the bench and play him 30% of the game, but is this fair to the Yakka's, Pendles, Davies', Clokes of our team? i dont think so. what sort of message does that give to the playing group?!
