St Kilda play 5 H&A matches coming from interstate with only 6 days until their next match. There is a definite threat of fatigue playing a role in these matches' outcomes. There is also a case to argue - do we rest some of our players in some of these matches to ensure they are refreshed and injury free for the whole of the season.

Some of our older players, and maybe some of our younger players (lacking the true hardness of several seasons of AFL matches) may not perform to their best. It has been historically proven that Victorian teams perform less well the match after a road trip.

From the Courier Mail (Qld)
Malthouse's radical plan for Buckley
By Damian Barrett
08feb06

Malthouse said if Buckley was to be rested from a match, the decision would not be determined by the opposition.

"It will have nothing to do with the team we're playing. It will be Collingwood's draw, which is historically all over the place with Anzac Day, Queen's Birthday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and now Monday games. That is a serious consideration, the length of time between games."

Buttifant said Buckley's career could be prolonged if his training and playing commitments were carefully managed.

"You want the best players to remain in the game, and Nathan is such a wonderful player, a great leader, a great mentor around the club, and you want him in the game as long as possible," Buttifant said. "That means, well, do you fly him interstate on a five-day turnaround or a six-day turnaround? There are those sorts of questions; they are things you throw around.

"We've discussed it. Most importantly we want to win. We want to play our best side. Sometimes there is a fine line where you do play players.

"For his longevity, that is something we have to factor in and consider very closely.

"A player of his calibre, you want him playing as long as possible without a significant regression in his performance. If you look at him athletically now, he is still very good."

Harvey would have to be considered at least as valuable an asset as Buckley, will we rest him at some time during the year, and if they do, when?

You'd think Gehrig would be in the same boat as well.

And I'd reckon just before the finals would be a good time to give a vet or 2 a rest...assuming we're in a good enough ladder position to afford that luxury!

This post is from Saintsational analysing our draw with respect to opposition recovery time versus ours:

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but anyway despite having 11 games with a 6 day break there are only 6 games where we have less recovery time that our opponents (in red font). There are 9 games (in orange font) where we have more recovery time than our opponents, and 7 games with equal recovery time.

At first glimpse the draw looks bad but with further investigation it may not be too bad. I did this last night so all may not be accurate.

The 2 bad games concerning recovery time are rounds 5 and 15. All bar one interstate trip (rd.15) we have either more or equal recovery than our opponents.

There are some interesting ones also, Geelong play the Lions at the Gabba in rd.18, then play us in rd.19 and we have 2 days more rest. Rd. 2 we play the Lions off a 6 day break but they only have 5 days off.

Recovery time seems to be a big factor these days and as far as this is concerned the draw isn't too bad, as far as who we play twice thats another issue which I'm pretty sure has been done before.
