Spare a thought for all of the people who have to work in retail over the busy Christmas period.I worked in retail for a couple of years while I was a student and did not enjoy Christmas due to all of the impatient phsycos that I had to serve.Retail workers have to be patient and polite with many stupid and ignorant people because "the customer is always right".If only more people realised that customer service staff are people too (not slaves) who are just trying to support themselves or a family. Our society and Christmas would be a much more enjoyable time for everyone.
In some countries the government enforces that people serve a certain period of time in military service. Wouldn't it be great if everyone had to work in retail for three months when they reached a certain age? The number of rude and arrogant customers would be halved because people would understand that it is not an easy job to do. When I become "Gargamel-supreme leader of this country" I am going to enforce a new customer service policy as well as eliminating all smurfs.

It's true. Retail is an absolute **** of a job, and I will never do it again. A bit of appreciaition and understanding is learnt when you do a job - I used to work in the ANZ call centre, and that's when you come to realise the people are only doing their job, toeing the company lines for their $14.50 an hour, which is a pretty ****ty rate for the abuse you get.

I would have trouble naming any jobs where this isn't the case. Why be specially nice to retail workers?

Retail workers wouldn't cop so much abuse it they actually concentrated on the job at hand & not their social life, I have walked out of supermarkets leaving a full trolley at the checkout, because the checkout person is talking to another employee about last nights date, or planning that nights entertainemnt, all the time more & more people are lining up waiting for service.

Then there is the shop assistant on the phone to a friend, doing the same thing & when you walk up to the counter they just turn their backs on you & keep talking, these people deserve abuse.

Thats usually the female checkout people (generalisation i know, but its true). They always seem pre occupied with their social lifes...but then again, most females from 16-18 do anyway

I work in an office environment now and it is so much easier than in the shop where I worked before. I get to have a full lunch, I send and read email etc.

In retail:

* I had to deal with many people with no concept of basic hygiene
* I had to listen to people whinge about prices being cheaper elsewhere (why don't you go there?)
* I ate lunch at 3 or 4 pm in fifteen minutes if it was busy.
* I had to explain that prices are set but people would still haggle over a few dollars
* People would want refunds on products that were out of warranty or clearly ****ed up by the user.
* "You need more staff here. I have been waiting for ten minutes" What am I to do about that? I would love to have more staff. Do you think I like listening to your complaints?
I worked in a shop for fairly good pay. I can't imagine the **** that bank tellers put up with.
There are so many other things that suck about retail.

Everyone is right on this one. I worked in retail for 11 years, and the standards of service in Melbourne shopping centres lately is the worst I have seen it. There is not nearly enough emphasis on "the customer is always right" in my book.

On the other hand, retail employees ARE real people, and it's not their fault you left your Xmas shopping to the last minute, and now that toy your kid wants has sold out. The 15 year old girl standing in the toy department at Target doesn't deserve to be abused because the buyer in the Head Office didn't order enough Harry Potter bendable action figures.

Oh, and if you haven't got your wife a present by Xmas Eve, PLEASE go and get it in the morning, not after you've had a skinful at the company lunch. Those guys are the worst.

I work in retail, although I work in the storeroom, so I don't have to put up with face-to-face contact with annoying custmers. Thank God!

I can tell you it is a madhouse at the moment. We have been working furiously trying to create some order in the storeroom, and trying to make sure the stock flows effectively. It is a lot of hard work at this tme of year, but I enjoy it. Doing a bit of hard labour, getting up a sweat, being busy - the time flies, actually. Although the most frustrating aspect is clearing 30 pallets, only to see another 30 arrive to take their place! Grrrrr.

well,i work in both retail and hospitality as i work 2 jobs, personally ive never been abused before, but have been threatened by a drunk because he wanted to be served before everyone else, didnt know what he was capable of,so i served him then let management know about it and they delt with him
this time of the year is the hardest time of the year for us and a lot of the time it seems as if people dont understand that and they are more important than everyone else. we work our butts off to try and get through as many people as quickly and as friendly as we can try
but a lot of the customers are pretty friendly about it and that does make things a lot easier for us:) :) :)

Well...i've experienced both retail and hospitality and I think that in both these industries the workers earn every last cent. This time of the year I know people that do 12 hour shifts - 12 hours spent on their feet may I add. And these are workers who have families and friends but because they spend their entire days working to serve customers they often are battling to get their own christmas shopping done so think about that one.

Customer is always right??? heheheheh anyone who works in retail/fast food may suggest otherwise (ie that a lot of the time the customer is wrong). Please understand that we are doing our best to meet your needs but for heaven's sake - sometimes we get lumped with the most outrageous requests!!!

It is very hard to stay sane in an environment filled with overstressed people that's for sure!!

It's not only retail that cop it this time of year. I work for Australia Post and I have just put in 120 hours in the last fortnight and there is still 3 days to go. :(

At least the pay is pretty good in comparison to the retail sector.

Abusive customers? Try working for a bank. The pay's crap and all day I hear complaints about waiting time and service.

I agree we need more staff but I can only serve one customer at a time. It's not my fault that Head Office cut back the number of staff.

I like www.customerssuck.com I hope you all read it and realise the poor bugger serving you is not to blame and is just as frustrated as you are.

That's 21 year old guy, and a better example would be table tennis tables (standard is $180, deluxe is $250, only real difference is the way the table and the legs are finished off, but we've been sold out of both for weeks, accessory sets $25 at the end of this path on your right...aarrgghhh, my brain is full of stupid knowledge!!! ), but SPOT FUNKING ON otherwise. Oh, and he likely has a phone going off on his belt, playing a really bad approximation of the Beverly Hills Cop theme as Lay-By tries to get his attention because they've stuffed something up that he'll have to fix... :D

I'm glad I'm off the floor during this period, I get to lift heavy **** all day long, which I'd rather do than put of with the scum that come into the store like yesterday. I was putting stock away, (I don't even wear the floor sales uniform) and this twat was looking at shoes. So as I'm carrying some boxes he walks up jams these shoes in my face and said "Nine and a half" I said "Excuse me sir?" "Nine and a half!" at first I couldn't understand him with his accent. Then I proceeded to suggest that he try the salesman. Rude ****. One year I did work on the selling floor and the amount of people that got worked up about petty **** was amusing. I had one "Woman" tell me the store was "A ****ing disgrace" whilst her kids were standing next to her. She got fired up over some frigging tree she couldn't buy even though it was like the 20th of december. I felt like telling her that she should buy one earlier. But I let her rant, whilst holding in my laughter.

can i recommend a job for all you students out there... go and put a resume in at the library.. I'm serious, it's the best job EVER! It's so bludgy, air conditioned, don't have to deal with customers and it's free service so they can't complain. The best part is that you're working for the council and they pay a LOT more than other jobs. I've been there for the past 2 years and I love it. You'd be suprised how much fun it is and some of my best friends I found at the library. Trust me, it's great.

I always take care to be nice to anyone who serves me in a shop, especially at this time of year when courtesy seems to fly out the window. :)

And just mentioning the sales girls who gossip instead of serving, I don't abuse them, I just leave my purchase on the counter and walk out after waiting a little while. Rather buy whatever it is somewhere else than abuse the **** outta some bitch and STILL give whoever they work for my money, when clearly they don't deserve it for choosing such lazy staff. :D

my boss came up with the best comment last year, some customer was being a prick so she said "i thought this was the seeason to be jolly"
customer said, "yeah,so"
and she said,"well your just being jolly rude"
thought it was a classic:D :D :D

Sometimes the only escape from the ****er customers is to have a chat to your friends...but they shouldn't be doing it while serving customers.

That's the problem they don't do it while serving customers, they do it while the customer is standing there waiting to be served.

I work in retail, and this time of the year is a pain in the you know what.

The day customers realise that retail employees are humans and not just slaves put in place to serve their needs will be a great day for all.

The CRAP about customers being always right is absolute rubbish...I would say that 98% they are wrong.

I've copped abuse before but in the end you get used it. People seem to think we can do a million things at once. I epecially hate it when people whinge if the price on the shelf was like $2 the difference to what it scanned when the item is like $100...I mean come on, stop being so tight.

Well I could go on forever, but guys, when you do your shopping (at anytime of the year)...please be nice to the employees.
