With all the talk of Fyfe polling well in brownlow voting so far it has me thinking that the club should challenge the farcical suspension with the aim of nullifying the suspension and getting rid of his carry over points.

I know it shouldn't be about personal accolades but getting rid of the points over his head would be a comfort come finals

He probably won't get the most votes anyway so I wouldn't really worry about it

It's already been paid back when Ballas got off and kicked 11 in the next 2 weeks. Pre-Fyfe ridiculousness he would have gone for sure.
Great point. A lot of players have Fyfe to thank for being the fall guy.

Doesn't mean he couldn't get off retrospectively now!

Not sure if there is any precedent here though :(

It (reversal of MRP decision) will never, ever happen.

Reversing the decision might not. But increasing eligibility in the Brownlow is certainly possible, given the number of suspensions given out these days for accidental acts.

The original spirit of the rule was to rub out players who engaged in striking or sniping behind play. I am pretty sure accidental head clashes were fine.

Perhaps the umps have been reluctant to give him votes knowing that he is ineligible.

That's a good point. Have been lots of good players since his suspension who could be taking votes: Neale, Ballantyne, Hill, Sandi, Suban. Quite possible that Fyfe hasn't polled that many in the past 2 months.

I don't disagree at all. Fyfe didn't do that. He doesn't do that. He isn't a dirty player.
It's just that I cannot see the AFL moving the goalposts so to speak half way through a season in regards to eligibility to winning the Brownlow medal. It would be fantastic obviously from our perspective if they did, but to me, it's hard to see the AFL giving a toss and correcting what was an awful decision especially given some of the decisions that have followed Fyfe's suspension this season.
As I typed earlier, perhaps the umps have been conscious of Fyfe's ineligibility and have not been awarding him votes.

Against it. Things that happened should stay that way.

But I think when he gets most votes no Freo should attend next year. It would be even nicer when he wins that year...
I don't think there's any need to be supercilious about it. Even if Nat wins the AFLPA award and not the Chas, people will say how stupid it was that he was ineligible.

Well, it's just that I wouldn't want an award I missed out on because of strange rules that got changed (or at least got interpreted different) during the running year anyway. Perhaps that can be called supercilious...

Not as sure as most media that he will be on most votes at seasons end anyway.

He polls extraordinarily well with the umpires. From his 65 eligible games so far counted, he has polled 50 votes. The current day player with the best polling rate, Chris Judd, only had 42 votes from his first 65 games.

The suspension might affect his vote getting abilities, however it hasn't affected other players in the recent past. Sam Mitchell was made ineligible in early 2011 yet still polled 30 votes.

Given his form this year and the fact Ablett may miss a string of games, he may not only end up leading the count but do so by an enormous margin.

I was actually discussing this at work today. The thing is, he still did break an interpretation of the rules, but that interpretation's changed since the incident. I think the fact that he pleaded guilty in the first place may work against him if there's a way to appeal the suspension. Imagine how much of a headache it'd be for the AFL trying to work out what to do with the games he missed because of it!

Probably even better that the Brownlow gets awarded to someone else, when eveyone knows they weren't the best going around that year - kind of devalues the whole medal really.

While Fyfe may have the arguably better year, Pendlebury will probably win by having the higher reputation. Likewise Fyfe will probably get more attention now in the coming years.

But considering Fyfe's style involves smashing all weaklings in his path, and an exceptionally hard and physical player, he's going to get a few suspensions every now and again with the MRP in the state that it is.
