Rhys Mathieson - ducking debut (video)

No the Op is in the wrong for a solid 5 pages he pretended to ignore people saying eagles players do it as well.

Make that 6 high tackle freekicks.

Ive never seen something so pathetic. And ive had Shuey, Hams and the Selwoods to watch.

Not even kidding this is a blight on the game.

Again - from the first page. Give it a rest.

No the op is attacking players who get high frees, learn to tackle better imo not a real issue worthy of a thread

Ok, so you've been called on your nonsense that the OP denied this is an issue at his club as well, now you say it's not thread worthy.
Well, eleven pages (so far) would suggest that enough people are fed up with this crap going on that it is worth a thread.
I'd be willing to bet that this first gamer didn't learn how to buckle the knees and uppercut the arm during the warm-up drills on game day.
This is a technique that players are training for, is gaining in prevalence, putting themselves at risk, and making for a terrible spectacle.
Personally, I've no issue at all if every one of these jibs has a thread started in their honour. If this tactic won't be addressed by the rules committee then the next best we can hope for is some naming and shaming.

The change should be the uppercut. Making that move should be classed as prior opportunity - if you can raise your arm like that you can get a handball off. Player uppercuts, it's holding the ball. Not like it's all that common. The Selwood ones are harder as it's a shoulder movement - good luck picking it. But the uppercut is blatant.

As for Mathieson, hope he enjoys getting smashed. Probably will end up getting hurt again.

Learn to tackle better, and get to the ball first instead of being second to it. puopolo does it all the time, its a skill players do the same thing with in the back. Change your technique

Got no link to the kid or the side. Have you actually looked at all the frees. Only the last one did he intentionally try to cause it. Poor tackling and Melbourne players trying to smash a first gamer is what brought on the others.
You could see it in their sloppy approach to tackle him.
He actually attacks the footy harder then any of those Blokes who attempted to tackle him so you will see plenty more frees I'm guessing. He kept on going in as well. Good on him

They say opinions can't be wrong .... well they were wrong

He got hit in the head in mid air and the other one dragged back by the neck when he wasn't even particularly low. I'm not sure how you could charge him with staging in either one.
The replay shows he doesnt get hit in the head. Player clearly punches the ball and barely brushes the face.

As for the other one, i dont know what footage youre watching but its not the same as me lol.

Kids a diver.

Right - so tacklers need to change their technique, while blokes are learning how to direct tackles so they create contact with the head and neck. Got it.
I thought the AFL said the head was sacrosanct, yet we have players training how to put themselves at risk, gain an advantage over fair players, and diminish the sport as a spectacle.
It's an issue, and I for one am not looking forward to all the clowns who shout down the tackler when one of these duckers causes his own serious injury.

Ah well

These valid arguments about a first game, first year, 19 year old player is exactly why I want Rhys Mathieson to keep embarrassing my footy club

10 frees for cheating next week young fella,

Amazing how so many people follow football and have no idea. Most of the players who get lots of high frees go in hard and the tacklers can't get in a good position to tackle them. There are blokes that attack the footy and drop to their knees or half slide into it which is ordinary but I didn't see any of that with this kid.
Fact. You point out which free and what he done wrong

You watch jack Viney play, he is a hard footballer
Mitch Robinson from the Lions is a guy who goes hard for the footy
Jack Ziebell is a guy who goes hard for the footy
Callan ward etc

Rhys Mathieson goes for the footy and his first thought is how can I get a free kick here
It's amazing how many people who watch footy want the practice of simulation brought into a game

They've all been pointed out, you just don't want to hear it.

Every team has players who look for frees, including some from the OP's team.

He addressed this in OP - just because players from your team do it doesn't mean you like it or it should be tolerated.

If they keep getting free kicks they will continue doing it.

Isn't that the point of the thread? Umpires/AFL need to do something about this, it's a far bigger eyesore than players kicking a ball 30 metres downfield that accidentally bounces out of bounds. Not to mention it is a potentially dangerous tactic, especially if juniors/lower league players start copying the trend and they either put themselves in harms way or an opponent tries to "make them earn it".
