Whats going on with this guy?

Missed 2 absolute sitters on the weekend. Has hardly played any footy on the ball...gone is the gut running of his first year....from my point of view he meanders around contests.

Nick Lower surely deserves a spot ahead of Rhys at present....even Clancee would be better option.....those 2 sitters he missed were completely inexcuseable:thumbsd:

Considering what he showed before he was injured and the type of player he is you simply have to persist with him.

He's a gut running confidence player that I don't believe will benefit from being dropped and I honestly think he is improving each game, not all our players are going to have elite kicking.

no. rhys has been putting in, he struggles when kicking for goal, but he is still miles ahead of pearce, lower in my mind should never have been dropped in the first place. rhys' play has been slowly ramping up, wont be long before he takes a game apart. he isnt the player he was in 08 though i will give you that... hope his mind isnt at GWS already

Disagree, He's not back to 2008 form but needs to be persisted with, he's gathering the ball and when he's not in the fwd 50 his disposal & decision making is generally pretty good. He needs to be played back into form, dropping him could have adverse effects on his season.

Around the ground he is doing well enough (although you can see always looking for the handball give) but somebody does need to have a talk to him about his set shots. Whatever Chris Mayne has done the last week has worked.

Watching one of them he was hunched over the ball too much needed to be more upright but most of it is between his ears.

Nick Lower missing out was a strange decision, obviously they wanted JVB in to play on Harvey and JVB to his credit did ok. I would expect Lower to come straight back in this week with Suban out.

I thought that was an encouraging game from him. He was making good position, his field kicking was good overall (setting up a few goals). His tackling was good.

His game at the moment is at the lower level of what we would like him to be at, however he should have finished the game with 3 goals to his name. The signs are there for me that he will cement a spot in this team.

Remember Pavlich missed a few sitters, McPhee missed a couple. Ballantyne missed a couple. Crowley missed one, Grover missed another. So if you are going to point out the goal kicking then have a go at the more senior members of the team too. It is one area that has already cost us 4 points.

Absolute crap. He played a good team game and was chasing and tackling and using his superb endurance to get behind the defence on a number of occasions.

He should have had 3 goals but that will come. His field kicking was good and his goal kicking accuracy will follow.

Some of the criticism of Rhys on this board is getting ridiculous. People are just looking soley at a few mistakes he makes and that's it. I was keeping a
Keen eye on him yesterday and I thought it was his best game yet. He was getting in the right positions, had a hand in a few goals and was chasing hard. He wasnt played in the centre square much but he still did a fine job and played a much better game than the likes of Crowley who deserve to be roasted more than Palmer. I'll be very disappointed if he is left out
Of the team this week

After watching the replay I thought Rhys was more than servicable.
Calling for his head because he missed two sitters is a bit daft, by that logic Mayne would be on the sidelines.

Overall it was a pretty good team effort from Palmer, he will get back to his best when his confidence is up.

If anyone was exposed it was Pitt, looked a little out of his depth but i suppose there is tons of upside.

Good win, I'll take that any day.

Nahhh. I thought Palmer was great

I was quite impressed with his first quarter in particular. He needs his confidence up when shooting on goal (so does Pav)

Stop using him as a whipping boy ffs - he had a solid game and while he's not back to his 08 form, he's improving week by week and having more and more of an influence as well

Considering the role he was playing I'm not sure there was much wrong with his performance. It sertainly stacks up well against the games from all our other half-forwards yesterday. He chased, tackled, created options and generally just worked hard for the team.

As for the goal kicking, it was no worse than several of his teammates.

I really am baffled as to why there is so much vitriol directed at this kid from Fremantle supporters on game day.

Had a great game, if he slotted the two extra goals he would have been in the bests. His set shot at goal has always been awful, it's something he and Fremantle need to work on. Our kicking at goal this year has been dreadful.

He is going well, criticisms like this can't help his confidence. He's not the only player who missed a couple of sitters yesterday. Valuable part of the team.

Fair enough, maybe I focussed too much on his glaring misses in front of goal.

However if Schammer was playing & did that people would be wanting Harvey's head.....Mayne's misses v Geelong were certainly not as close to goal or directly in front as Rhys's were.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Rhys of 2008 but just to me, he's too slow to be playing a half fwd role & if Harvey has no intention of playing him in the midfield I think there are better options for that particular area of the ground...namely Walters.

this.

Geez dinner is going to be late. This roast only has one cook at the mo' :o

Nah, some of Mayne's misses this year have been just as bad, if not worse. Again, add MJ, McPhee, Pavlich, Crowley, Hill, Ballantyne and a host of others to the list of players who have missed easy shots at goal. Palmer certainly isn't alone aboard the SS Howdidhemissthat.

Much better kick. Nowhere near the running capacity. Not even close.

Our forwardline with Palmer is much more functional than with Walters. Palmer will run a defender into the ground. They will be much less capable of running off him and rebounding from defence. The combined endurance of our forwardline is whats locking the ball in our forwardline. Swapping Walters with Palmer reduces our forward pressure immensely.

Palmer has got behind the defence on 1-2 occasions in our last 2 games. The difference between him and Walters is that he gets behind the defence by running hard. Walters gets behind the defence by lagging behind in a chase.

Why would palmer or any other young gun want to leave freo for a few extra bucks and go and play for GWS or suns - they'd be crazy - reality is those teams are years of success and premiership success is what guys play for and Palmer and the others guys will be pushing close to a premiership over the next 4 years i reckon. Give Gazza a ring and ask how enjoyable it is to get flocked every week or play in a team that's gets to the GF 3 years in a row??

He does take a while to make a decision, but thought his endeavour was good, and his field kicking was fine...as was his handball.

Set up some good plays.
I'll just block out the goal kicking for my own sanity.

This. When he plays on instinct he's fine, but when he has time to think you can just see him start to question himself.

Apart from missing those two sitters (and almost stuffing up that goal with the one-two handpass with Pav) I thought he played a serviceable game.

If he IS going to GWS, he's not really doing a lot to greatly increase his trade/compensation value...

Ok...appears I'm the minority...I'm man enough to take that :p.....I still reckon Rhys is a looooooong way off where he should be with his form.

Here's hoping he can show that in the next few months....an in-form Palmer will certainly go a long way to a Top 4 possie....:thumbsu:

wish people would get off this guys back.

his field kicking this year has been great (made one clanger against brisbane) and his kicking into the 50 has been his highlight so far IMO.

the media smashed this kid and made him believe that he had a problem with his kicking, which was news to me. i knew he had the ability to float one under pressure but dont all gut running mids do this?

for all the people asking for lower to come in for palmer, ask yourself this:

would lower have been able to run and make the same space that palmer did to enable himself to have 2 easy shots on goal?
