I was thinking of something along these lines tonight

I judge players differently ( or try to ) based on levels of experience. I think the ''youngsters'' ie under 20 games can come along at a certain level and as long as the coaching staff are happy with them playing then so am i.

If they get dropped I wont be calling for heads either

Richie will have more bad games than good for a while, but as noted above he has now transcended SANFL and will learn more and more quickly playing AFL...and while we have injuries and can carry him , he should play

I honestly don’t think everything is as rosy as you make it out to be. Sure he’s shown some decent signs this season, but overall he hasn’t been all that impressive. The bottom line is he panics under pressure and makes poor decisions. He seems to always be rushed and one thing I’ve noticed is that he seems to constantly lose his footing. I think fightingdreamer88 pointed this out last week also. Why is this?

It's his running action I reckon... hard to describe but he seems to run without lifting his feet all that far above the ground which is asking for trouble. I actually noticed this right back in his first game for us (the showdown last year).

He's shown good presence of mind in certain plays but on the same token he's been awfully exposed at times. Tonight he played on some of the league's best players and will learn a lot. His game against Port Adelaide was quite impressive, tonight not so much, but he'll benefit muchly from tough games like this. I also think that he probably more or less played McLeod's role as a junior, which he's been forced to relinquish at AFL level. He probably doesn't feel quite so comfortable playing a slightly more stagnated defensive role. Overall we're seeing the good and the bad; this is a development year for him so I say lets back him and hope he continues to improve.

I don't think this is the case .....IMO it's the opposite ......the kid is obviously super confident and it's this confidence that he SLACK with his disposals ......IMO too casual.

It's the signs you look for in a good player but ATM with his level of experience and the pace of AFL it's causing him some problems.

That'll be sorted out by the club .....don't worry about that ;)

FFS have we forgotten that the Sydney Swans are one hell of a side and have the ability to consistently beat the West Coast?

They have been good enough to make the last 2 Grand Finals (so only the West Coast Eagles have an equal side in the last 24 months) so it’s not like we were playing some up start that was getting a bit of media attention for there good form, this team are the real deal.

Anyone who watched the game last night could see Richard Douglas was struggling with the pace of the game but a bit of perceptive with whom we were playing.

Richard Douglas will learn more about the game and his own ability from playing and losing his position against the Sydney Swans than he would if he got 30 touches against the 15th or 16th side. That’s why he stayed on the ground.

*As much as it pains me to say it*

You are right I thought the work of Vince and Knights and even Griffen was far better than Douglas, he seemed a little lost at times and got caught with the ball...........but also in saying that the kid still has alot of good qualities and has a bright future ahead of him with the AFC.........time and patience is what it will take:thumbsu:

Terrible timing my me. Poor kid had an absolute shocker last night. One of those days where everything you touch turns to brown.

It's a learning thing. You just can't get it without playing at the top and I would still have him in the side until we get a few of our top injured players back. He needs to know that the coaching panel have faith in him so that he doesn't drop his bundle. NC will impress on him not to do so.

Confidence is the key here and I'm sure he possesses the nouse to learn from it.

Even the great VB has had the occassional shocker............but can anyone remember it. :p

Maybe, but you don't improve your decision making and learn how to cope with AFL pressure by playing in the SANFL. At the moment, he isn't perfect, but he has played less than 10 games.
Douglas 2007=van Berlo 2005

VB played about a dozen games in that year. Didn't do much but showed a bit of promise. Learnt plenty. We are reaping the rewards now.

I can't remember a player of his age at our footy club, so willing to put his body on the line.

Top notch half of football Richie, keep it up :thumbsu:

Re: Richard Douglas

That effort brought a tear to my eye. It really did.

Re: Richard Douglas

His disposal was first rate that half. He'd been struggling a bit with that over the last couple of weeks, but seems to be more confident in his ability to distribute.

Re: Richard Douglas

I am now a believer. :D

Great second quarter; his play on the wing against 3 Docker opponents was nothing short of brilliant. Keep it up Douglas.

Good to see you've joined the bandwagon, the kid is courageous.:thumbsu:
