RICHMOND’S star signing Dion Prestia will be fit to complete a full pre-season at Punt Road as the Tigers prepare for the return of Chris Yarran.
The Tigers pre-season will start on Monday for their first-to-fourth-year players with Yarran committed to returning early after injury and mental health injuries.
Prestia, out since Round 16 following knee surgery, should quickly progress from the rehab group into full training.
He battled for most of the season with knee pain as the Gold Coast’s injury crisis worsened, but eventually succumbed to the problem.
That cartilage issue kept him out for the rest of the year, but Richmond says he is in good shape.
New football boss Neil Balme said Prestia would quickly progress once the club’s senior players returned to training.
“He will still be in the rehab group to start with, but it will only take him a little while to get out of it. It was a little cartilage issue,’’ he said.
Richmond star Jack Riewoldt revealed on Friday he had needed a second bout of surgery on the little finger of his right hand after a titanium plate snapped.
“I had my right little finger fused and then unfortunately I snapped the (back of the) titanium plate three weeks in, and had to go back in on a Monday night and have it done again,” Riewoldt told RSN.
“It’s a thing that’s held me back and been the biggest pain in my bum over this break.
“To break it again after I’d fused it the first time wasn’t a great result, but it’s all smooth sailing now.”
Riewoldt has also had an ankle reconstruction after initially believing he needed only minor surgery, but will be back running next week.
He will be managed until Christmas but believes he can still complete a large chunk of the pre-season.
Yarran told the Sunday Herald Sun last week that while he is still overweight he believes he return to AFL football.
The former Carlton running defender has told the club he will return to training in an attempt to shed weight after several months of training away from Punt Road.
Richmond is hopeful rather than confident he can regain his training intensity and put together a full season of fitness work.
A payout is still a realistic prospect should Yarran fail to meet fitness requirements but if he can stay free of calf complaints he could find a way to make an improbable comeback to AFL football.
The Tigers have lost Ty Vickery to Hawthorn and Brett Deledio to GWS, bringing in Prestia, Geelong’s Josh Caddy and Sydney’s Toby Nankervis.
