I understand the point you are making regarding Dimma and the coaching staff's development capabilities but you have to consider that most players aren't out and out stars from the word go. We have gotten lucky with Ellis and Vlastuin as they've come on in a short space of time, but you can't just take your 1st rounders being guns as a given, especially within a 3 or 4 year time frame. In that 2009 draft we arguably picked up 3 best 22 players in the first 3 rounds, and until this year 2 of them looked like duds. FJ was also horrendously under-resourced for a long while and I'd say has done quite well considering.

Overall I'd say that our drafting has been actually been a strength of Richmond's for years now and its why we have gone from shithaus Fitzroy tier shite to a finals contender in the space of 4-5 years with a young list. The problem now is that the majority of the kids we've taken in the last 2 years have not had enough time to cement their spot and take games away from Grigg, Petterd etc. Whether this is the fault of the players or the coaches, I don't know as an outsider, but next year will be interesting for sure to see what we've learnt from the season as a whole, not just the first 13 rounds or the last 9.

You are probably right. I got carried away with the moment. Also, I get really frustrated with the fact that we seem to have forgiven last year ( and previous years' football operations ). There was a crescendo of criticism on BF and while we should move on, to a degree, if management don't admit mistakes, or ignore them, then they won't get fixed.
If "adequate" is a reasonable description of Jackson and Hartley, also, then how far short is that of what we would consider acceptable for Richmond. Long, long way for mine.
But, go Tiges, nonetheless.

It is assumed we haven't learnt from our mistakes but how do you know? But remember when we are talking about drafting , just remember it is a speculative auction and players just don't convert junior talent to senior talent for some reasons. I just think unless your in the room, we are all providing an ill informed view of what happens, even if what we see, we don't like and feel we have to comment on it.

You raise some very interesting points Goldfrog . I was just considering them & I was thinking/wondering about how much time/money is spent on recruiter development ??? Maybe RFC_Official or Tiger71 or anyone else with some understanding of this could shed some light on the subject. If there isn't much work done in this arena perhaps it's an area where a competitive advantage may be sought ??

Think that it's mandatory that actions speak louder than words and I don't think RFC aren't aware of this. Hence the united front mid year etc despite poor on field performance and then the regathering for 9 games in a row. Where this leads I don't know but should be a real watershed moment 2015 you would think.

Fair enough each to their own. I say speculative because we aren't judging players on 'senior exposed form' just on junior form, so we just don't know how players adapt to this level. Yes it is more refined than of previous era's, but there is still a lot of intangibles as well.

Hodge has never had to carry his club, whereas Judd has carried Carlton throughout the late 00's and early 10's. Even in his West Coast days, he was a key focal point of the Judd/Cousins/Kerr dream midfield. Whilst Hodge is an integral part of the Hawks lineup, he's mostly had a very solid group around him.

This is reflected in the fact that Judd has won 5 B&F's and 6 AA's, because at his club he stands out more than most.

If Hodge and Judd had played in the same team as each other, I would think Judd would be considered the better player, but Hodge has had the fortune of playing for a very successful club for a large portion of his career, and therefore, whilst Hodge's career achievements are better on paper, Judd to me is still the better overall player.

Just my two cents though!

I know the discussion has moved on from the article in the OP, but I just wanted to highlight something I learnt from reading it:

Richmond had the highest list turn-over between 2009 and the start of 2014 -"The official turnover toll is 37 senior and rookie-listed players since ’09."

Wow.

Of course we all want the recruiters and coaching staff to do better, but improving the team substantially while turning the whole list over is a great effort, IMO. On-field performance almost always gets worse when the list starts getting churned.

I think so many have grossly under estimated how bloody hard it was to try a rebuild when we were forced to do it. Very little currency on the trade table to try and push ourselves up the draft order in the last couple of years (other than untouchable, lower age guns or potential guns) and crap draft picks in the early years despite our low ladder finishes. They AFL made a massive blue introducing 2 teams in consecutive years. Massive and all just so they didn't have to worry about byes every week. Idiots. It has hurt a lot of teams while helping others that didn't need it.

That said, we must make finals next year. And we need to win at least one otherwise tough calls will have to be made.

And the debate about how we should have taken player X instead of player Y in the draft is just a fallacy.
The draft is untested kids fresh out of secondary school.

Every club takes a gamble with its picks and if people want to point score either way it's pretty easy.

I really, really hope you're right, TJ, but please forgive my cynicism when I read the sort of crap that Blair Hartley was reported as saying in the Herald Sun. FJ's efforts, and that of Hartley himself, have been shithouse, a fact that didn't escape most Big Footy subscribers who went through this in great detail last year and published wholesale criticism of our football dept efforts.
I'm not suggesting that Hartley should say that in public, but better to say NOTHING than to continue on with the garbage that we, as supporters, were subjected to last year.
I will be convinced when they DO things, not when they SAY things. But as I said, I'm with you in wanting them to get it right.
