Well it has been revealed just who Richmond is looking at in terms of the betting agency we want to sign up. It is Sportsbet. The deal is supposedly worth $2.4 mil for the next 3 years. The only problem though is the AFL has an agreement with Tabcorp which is one of the AFL's protected sponsors, although their deal ends next year.

It will be interesting to see what they do regarding this issue as they are well aware some clubs are struggling to sign major sponsors because of the Global Economic crisis. Here's hoping the AFL decide to help us out in this situation and allows us to sign the deal.

it just keeps getting better. A Hawks supporter at my work, who has developed an absolute hatred by Ben Cousins & anyone who agrees with his Richmond signing, is a big Sportsbet man. Actually its his second love.

Now when he finds out that Sportbet will throw an extra $10,000 for every Ben Cousins brownlow vote he's gonnaq spit chips.

Sorry to bore you guys with, but this is absolute gold for me after I have heard Hawks this, Hawks that for the last two years. He just stand Richmond turning the corner on or off the field. Hahahahaha

p.s. Realistic Tiger, I think your 35,000 member prediction might have been under estimated by 5,000 :)

an interesting situation, not sure why this case would be any different from the NM Mazda or cats Ford arrangement and now Tigers Nissan deal all in competition with the AFL Toyota corporate deal...I look forward to the AFLs full support on this one as gambling is a rare industry that is not afflicted during recessionary times and will prove to be a lifeline to clubs struggling for sponsorship

I guess Toyota and Betfair are much more confident that they have a competitive structure and intangible element to their brand while TabCorp see Sportsbet and other like betting companies as a direct threat to their take. Hopefully the AFL negotiates past this as it would be a very lucrative opportunity.

Hmm, not quite a compelling case there I'm afraid PHX, Toyota could reasonably expect as much competition from the likes of Mazda and Ford as Tabcorp would from sportsbet...

the tigers to get an extra $10,000 FOR EVERY BROWNLOW VOTE

i say offer it all to ben cousins he is on min dollars and if he can earn another $200,000 from this he will be busting his ass off both to stay clean & to perform.

Thats a good incentive for Cuz

I really hope the AFL approves this. Like the OP said with the Economic crisis its gonna be hard to find a sponsor, So now that we got one you would think the AFL would approve it. Plus all those bonuses 100k if we make the finals and 10k for every brownlow vote! We have to get this done.

Agreed, the AFL need to see that long term benefit and relax these sponsor restrictions so that clubs can stop relying on hand outs to survive.

Cousins is a huge money maker for richmond.

Even if he only plays 20 games over 2 years and that's it he will have made a big impact on the money for the club, profile and development for the young squad

Not if Toyota believe and trust their marketing and reputation brand image (#1 in Australia) to rise above Mazda and Ford compared to the TAB who may think sportsbet having a rising image directly affects their takings with better offers and better odds.

This is also a lot about hypothetical boardroom attitude situations I'm putting up here.

thats all quite arbitrary PHX, not solid ground for a case, I hope:o

Lol, well no I'm not after precedent or facts to take a case to the AFL, I'm just talking blind possibilities. ;)

But I think it might be the likely case to the TABs problem as it isnt exactly getting bigger or competing well against the corporate bookmakers as far as I'm aware. On the other hand Betfair is a different comodity with it's betting and laying and Toyota are still the number 1 brand despite the recession and dont look like slipping from that.

Just looking at it if anyone was likely to disapprove of it, it would be the TAB.

If the AFl knock it back and we dont find another major sponsor then they should pay us what the deal is worth, especially considering this current economic climate.

more likely that tabcorp will dig in as they are hurting since the Vic govt quashed the monopoly on pokies bw Tatts and tabcorp and the influx of corporate bookies as mentioned...wouldnt think theyll roll over ...depends whats on the contract:confused:

let's face it. if tabcorp rejects it. it would not do them any good in terms of reputation. supporters (richmond and others) will not look at them in a good light. so even if sportsbet doesn't manage to get the sponsorship approved, i still think people are more inclined to go with sportsbet for their punts in the future rather than tab. i know i would.

i believe that tabcorp only have a year remaining in their agreement , if the afl are on our side this could be important leverage in negotiations if Tabcorp intend on extending the contract

Correct. We won't know until the new year when the commission meets. I would not be surprised if there was a "conflict of interest" clause in there somewhere. Who knows with the commission though.

it might go our way,

how will it look if the AFL says no to our deal in such tough economic times, not 2 weeks detatched from giving the dees all that money for nothing.

they'd basically be taking money from us and at the same time giving money to someone else

fingers crossed eh?:thumbsu:

I've not followed this closely, but seriously why is this taking so long for the AFL to actually make a decision..either way

Set a precedent and next time this crops up the AFL could lose the sponsors which they get their coin off.
Don't allow it and probably some 100000 chinned fat cat who used to host a game show will arc up because of something...blah blah....cousins.....rorting....blah blah....look ma i'm on tv....etc etc

Honestly I don't know
