at the moment id say essendon we owe them big time and payback has only just begun

Apart from Richmond those who make up the big four are: Collingwood, Geelong and Essendon. My choice is highlighted.

I know that this question was put to Tiges supporters but I am surprised to think that Carlton (in your opinion) isnt considered one of your biggest rivals. When I first started following the Blues in the late 70's / early 80's after the Pies it was always the Tiges. A lot of this stemmed from the vicious tussles between the 2 teams in the late 60's and early 70's including the 69, 72 and 73 GF's (and later 82)

Carlton and Essendons passion / hatred in the games played between them has stemmed from one person - Sheedy. He took this Carlton rivalry to the Bombers and continued his hatred when the Bombers played the Blues.

I am not saying you are wrong I am just saying that I found this surprising. Our 2 clubs attract good crowds when they play each regardless where they are on the ladder because of this proud history between the 2 clubs.

I'm with you Bomba, it surprises me also the varying opinions here.
Blues have always been in my lifetime our biggest rival.
But I grew up in the '70s.
Anyone who grew up pre-1969 would probably say the Pies, going back to the Jack Dyer era, but after that it's always been the Blues.
And for good reason, the clubs generally hate each other. Carlton still won't even let some of our past players back to their club, ie Mal Brown lol

There is a rivalry trying to be "manufactured" with the Bombers now, but apart from 1995, there is absolutely no history with them to call them a rival.

The Pies are always up there, just because they're the Pies, but we've been so bad for so long, we haven't had many memorable games. 1990>??? Mother's Day massacre would be it I guess.

I guess it's how old you are whether you remember the "good old days" lol. The 1972-1973 grand finals sort of were just one of many great games between the two clubs. Other games where the fighting continued over the boundary line, Percy Jones v Tony Jewell lol.

I was saying this in another thread, there is a fine line between love and hate IMO when it comes to Carlton. They're the one club I would hate to see go out of existence,, because I do consider them our main rival and would luv to see it continue when we both get off the bottom.

Most of my friends who support Carlton, it's a friendly rivalry - others not so.

But each to their own I guess. Most of the younins haven't seen much in their time to warrant picking Carlton, but my memories are pretty fresh.

What happened to your doggies in 54 thru to 07 signs?:o
WHAT!? Maybe different guy is doggiesin54? lol to other guy, in all fairness Richmond are way worse than the Dogs. Will never forgert 2006 round 1, Dogs win by 115 points. For some reason I just hate the Tigers, maybe its Wallace and Brown. BTW, hows Wallace's 5 year plan coming along?

I think our biggest rivals are the Pies - always great crowds and atmosphere when playing them. Blues are a long way second but nothing beats a great Pies vs Tigers match at the G .........:p

As a long time supporter and attndee of around 400 games, I'm confident in saying that Collingwood are by far our bigest rival, with Essendon now second. Carlton were there but we have both gone down to the point now where the AFL actually scheduled these 2 teams to play each other at Telstra Dome in 2006. Not so, with Collingwood & Essendon. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, we play Coll & Ess twice each year, every year, however I recall a few years where we were drawn to play the Blues only once. As for the Bulldogs, what a tragic history they have, and it paints a beautiful picture of their poor miserable home that Brownie & TW left of their own free will. I'd say they both got sick of the moccasin brigade out there.

whats the bulldog plan one flag in 82 seasons what a club

In my view it's Carlton.

Richmond INVENTED hating Carlton when Collingwood was still just being jealous of Melbourne.

guys i think only a blind supporter could say that richmond arnt in the worst position out of any afl club (on field)

My first introduction to the tigers was my older brother's hatred for Neil Balme when he king hit his hero Southby in the 73 GF. I was too young to remember that but was there for the Qual. final when Jewell & Percy had a "dance" out at Waverley. The 82 GF win over Richmond is still my favourite as we were touched up in the 2nd semi and were expected to win.

The two teams have been starved of recent success but when we meet the games are still passionate and the die hard supporters from each club want to win these games more than most other. This stems backs to the rivalry from the late 60's & early 70's. A lot of younger supporters from other clubs dont realise teh huge supporter base that Richmond have and thats why there is the big 4 in Melb.
