Richo for Captain 2008?

I was watching the match against the Roos on Sunday afternoon, and one of the commentators said that Richo would love to captain the Tigers, but felt the timing was alway wrong. So why don't we get behind Richo being captain next year, and then hand over to one of the 'younger players', when his time is up.

what do we think ?

Funnily enough I agree. Had you asked me anytime in the past 5 years I would have yelled "NO!" at the top of my voice and ran for the hills but at present he is the only mature aged player we have that epitimises teh word "leader". FFS he has earned it and for a 2-3 years stint until one of the kids steps up he would be ideal.

yep i agree. if he can do it for another 2 or 3 years then by that time the deledio's and foley's etc will be ready to take it on.
if we can get a skipper with as much heart as richo im sure the other guys around him will lift a few cogs.
he can get the team fired up like no other. definately not like some pea heart like johnson.

Funny they along with Newman are the two I like as well. The captain / leader needs to be someone the others will look up to.. My God can Richo do more than he's already doing. He is the most inspiring player in the side, even at his ripe age of 32.

If Richo's no. 12 is not good enough to lead the club they're a joke. 17 for the captain is a stupid PR gimmick introduced by spin masters wallace and miller, not to mention an insult to great skippers like royce hart and dale weightman - are their numbers not good enough for a tiger skipper now? if deledio one day becomes captain will he have to relinquish flea's 3 for captain blood's 17? what a load of horse sh*t. yet another example of F**ked up tiger priorities.

As much as we all love the big guy - he is no cpatain.

If anything the best thing that can happen to Richmond is for him to be moved into the backline - in the Patty Bowden/Polak loose man role. It is a role that almost anyone can play and therefore we are not harming our future development.

We will never develop Schultz, Hughes, Patterson, Riewolt or Graham with Richo around. He totally dominates the fwd line and suffocates the young guys from developing. He has been unable to curtial those useless boundary hugging leads near 50 or the cheap marks on the wing - he has one mode of operation and that is "kick it to me...me...and me".

In his 14 year career we have been unable to develop any 190+ fwd alongside him. Benny Gales best games where when we moved him from CHF to an extra backmen, Ottens and Richo had zero chemistry about them.

We temporarily played Richo in the ruck and back this year and out of no-where Hughes stepped up - we need to do more of this especially in the next eight weeks.

At the moment it looks like we can get another 2 years out of Richo and then what?

Pettifer and Richo are great when they're on song and atrocious when they're not, and there's hardly anything at all in the middle.

I love Richo, and he's been a great player for the Tigers but surely the time has past him to be captain, at 32 years of age the responsibility needs to be handed on to a younger lion hearted player who is consitently doing the team things (Newman or Foley)

There is a reason why Pettifer isn't in the leadership group, and I will hand in my membership if he is made captain.

On another note, don't rule out Nathan Brown or Polak as a long shot being made captain.

Pett's would not want to be captain. He clearly does not like any pressure. I don;t think there is any risk of that happening.

Richo Vice. Joel Bowden yesterday showed why he will never be captain.

I would be happy if they gave it to Richo but I can't see it happening. He really wants to win every match and it shows.

As great a servant as he has been for the club it is time for us to look to the future. Give it to someone younger that can grow in the role as the team grows. Richo tries his hardest every week yet week after week I still see him giving guys a bake because they didn't kick it to him despitehim being out of position and being surrounded by 2-3 opponents.

It is time for a changing of the guard at Richmond and that guard needs to start featuring younger players like Newman, Foley, Lids even Tuck for no other reasin than these are the guys that are the future of Richmond.

Just calling it as I see it. Richo had the chance to be captain a few years back but his on field behaviour ruined that chance for him. Give him the Captaincy for his 250th and that is about it.

Great plan but sadly none of these guys apart from Newman have strung 2 decent seasons together yet and none are capable of doing things that inspire the team. Courageous at times, yes, inspirational no, apart from maybe Foleys runs against the Saints. A couple might be able to lead by example occasionally but not consistently yet. I agree we need to move forward but FFS lets make sure when we do its to someone with leadership qualities who we can be assured will at least perform and give 100% week in week out. Seems like a bloody good step in the right direction to me.

I like newman as well, tough as nails and couragoues not to mention he is one player on our list that can actually hit a target when kicking the football, Id take newy as captain in a heartbeat as he cant do worse then what we have now

That is why a few weeks back I suggested it was time to look at Newman for Captain. Ticks all the boxes for me, Respected by the playing group, Inspirational on and off the ground came back from the broken leg always puts his body on the line have never seem him shirk and issue and played the week after breaking his ribs and suffering a punctured lung IIRC. Over 100 games so has enough experience to be a good footballer, remember he was ready to break out at the start of last year after being chosen to represent Australia in the Gaelic matches. Given that I would have no qualms with him being given the chance to lead the club as he typifies everything you would want in a Captain.

Foley would be an admirable VC tough little nut who has done it the hard way to make it in the AFL. Again well respected by the group for his determination to make it, again always puts his body on the line and being at the coalface playing in the middle will inspire those around him by his deisire to win the hard ball at all costs.

Lids IMO might need something like a DVC role to help him step up and breakout as a player. He would then have the responsibilty on his shoulders to be a leader on the ground. Perhaps that would see him push that little bit harder in games as players would be looking at him to see if he was doing the hard yards as well.

Yep I agree without any hesitation, except that too many people say that Foley, Lids are too young and that they need a couple more years, so why not give it to a guy they plays his heart out every time he puts on his jumper? The others are still just 20 yo. They will need some more time don't you think.

you cant compare things to judd - he is a freak in every aspect of afl footy and is doing things never done before
