I am a massive Petterd fan, but I was just after other people's thought on him.

In 2009, he was used mainly as a semi-defensive forward, capable of taking marks and kicking goals (19 in 18 games).

He didn't take many games by the scruff of their necks, but he was always competitive and seemed to give his all.

Before this year, he looked pretty comfortable on a HBF with time also spent in the midfield, but with the addition of Joel McDonald to our already strong backline, I doubt Petterd will spend much time in the back six in the future.

So, how do people rate him and what position will he fill from here on in?

I can see him (and dunn) playing more down in the forward line. Its an area that still has a lot of kinks to work out. When Ricky did play up near the posts he seemed to handle himself rather well and was also able to apply some pressure when things didnt go our way (often).

I think he is coming along, he developed more in 09. Lets hope he improves more in 2010

Would be be in line to be used for Gold Coast bait next year? Or is his contract done.

A 'required player' as they say.

Really hope he stays in the forward line. His courage and hardness at the ball are needed down there. Can take a mark aswell, this kid.

Good thread.

I don't think he'll be used down back again, as good as he looked on the HBF I think MacDonald was recruited for a reason and we still have Cheney, Bennell, Bell (Who I don't rate but since he's still on the list he's in contention) and Grimes (Who IMO is midfield long-term but will still be down there at times in 2010).

Up forward? IMO Watts, Jurrah and Bate are part of our forwardline for the next 10 years so theres three other positions up for grabs. It is likely Aussie takes one, he's our best pure crumbing forward. I'd say Petterd is competing with Maric and Jetta (Who is a midfielder, not a small forward but I think he'll find it hard to get a game in our midfield in 2010) for two spots. Maybe throw Tapscott in there as well. I think Ricky could be a really good player for us up forward in a Max Rooke/Campbell Brown defensive forward mould if he stays fit, and to be fair he's got more ability than those blokes.

Our list is so exciting when you think about it :) . Most of it is potential, but I can't wait for 2010.

He would be wasted in the backline at this point IMO, we need a bit of body strength in our forward line with the others (Watts, Jurrah, Maric, even to some extent Bate) all likely to struggle in one-on-one contests with bigger bodied opponents.

There is footage on YT somewhere of that mark he took in the last quarter of the Port game, sealing us the game with the resulting goal. Simply planted his feet, leaned on his opponent and took a simple chest mark. We don't have many players going through our forward line capable of doing that on a regular basis.

I don't think many would disagree kicking goals is (and has been) our major concern. If Watts, Maric, Wonna and Jurrah are all going to be in that front six, I'd be much happier if we have a bit of strength and marking power rotating through there with them, so a lot will rest on Bate, Petterd, Sylvia and (to a lesser extent because I think he will struggle to get a game) Miller.

He should settle in nicely in the forward pocket I believe. He's capable of taking a mark & is a decent set-shot.

He works well in the forward line because of his strong hands and he does have a good kick for goal. But the pressure that he applies is much more than any of the other fwds and we need that pressure up forward to create turnovers resulting in goals.

We might have the most misspelt team in the league. For god's sake somebody sign Presti.

On second thoughts..

I'm glad you had second thoughts, I'm still coming to terms with the spelling of Wona's name.....

Ricky I believe will become a unique player, he can play nearly every position on the ground, oh, maybe not unique as Dunn can do the same thing. I like both players but I think they will be fighting for a 3rd or 4th forward position, or at least tht's what I'm hoping for.....

I rate Petterd as a pretty handy player more because he gets the simple things right which is what you want in an up and comer. He leads at the right time, marks/kicks ok, has a good head on is shoulders and isn't short of courage. I think any defensive days he had are well and truely over unless there is an epidemic of injuries. Mark Williams found a niche alongside Franklin and Roughead with simple effective footy leading and kicking goals so I don't see why Petterd can't get a regular spot up forward. I rate Petterd's work ethic better as well. Having said that it will be interesting to see how it pans out next year. If senior players like Green and Davey are pushed forward next year then I don't think Petterd will truely excel until a little later but I am more focused on seeing him develop a bit of a tank and seeing what else he can do rather than just kick goals next year.

Petterds consistancy is the big thing this year. He needs to bring his 'good' games each week.

Being brutal, I wouldnt complain if GC offered us a solid draft pick though.
