ALAN Lugg, a former mayor of Coburg, and East Brunswick newsagent for more than 60 years, has died of cancer at his home in Coburg, aged 88.
In addition to running a business, Alan also devoted his time to the community and his beloved Carlton FC. He served the club for more than 40 years, first as treasurer and timekeeper for the under-19s, and later as senior timekeeper. He acquired the nickname ''Father'' on a trip away with the team in 1975 because his mismatched attire made him look like a priest. He rarely missed a game and was honoured with life membership of the Blues in 1978, the same year as the great Carlton full-back Geoff Southby.
