Fremantle mourns death of football great

Fremantle football great Con Regan has died while on holiday in Canada.

The East Fremantle premiership player, who notched up 262 games with the club during an impressive football career from 1953 to 1965, passed away on Friday while on a cruise ship holiday.

Mr Regan, believed to be in his mid-70s, was the Fremantle Dockers inaugural team manager and was also a senior police officer before his retirement.

He is a part of the famous Fremantle sporting and football clan which includes the Miller and Regan families, and also counts Daniel Kerr and Shaun McManus among its members.

The Fremantle Football Club said it was deeply saddened by the news of Mr Regan's passing.

Fremantle President Rick Hart said the news was devastating for everyone involved at the Fremantle Football Club and for everyone involved in football in Western Australia.

"Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Con’s wife Beryl and the Regan family," Mr Hart said.

"Con was synonymous with football in Fremantle and his outstanding character shone out every day as he represented himself, our great game and his community with absolute pride and distinction.

"His commitment to the Fremantle Football Club from our very inception as the club’s team manager and then more recently as Vice Patron will never be forgotten.

"He represented a passion for everything that is great about our game and he will be sorely missed."

Players and staff will wear black armbands at tomorrow’s match against Hawthorn.

Con Regan was honoured by the AFL with the prestigious Jack Titus Award in 2003, the firstWest Australian to receive the award. The award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding service to football.

During Mr Regan's time with East Fremantle, the team made the top four every year and won two premierships in 1957 and 1965.

Mr Regan was the first player to play 250 games for East Fremantle. He also played in 25 WAFL finals games and nine state games.

In 1963, Mr Regan was made a Life Member of the East Fremantle Football Club and a member of the WAFL “200” Club. In 1996 he was elected to the Fremantle City Hall of Fame and in 1997 made a Legend in the Fremantle Football Club’s Hall of Legends.

As well as his football achievements Con was also very successful in water polo, playing more than 50 years senior water polo with the Melville Club.

“The Fremantle Football Club will truly miss not only a great club man and football legend but we will miss one of nature’s great men,” Mr Hart said.

Condolences to the Regan family.

Hopefully the AFL can put together a tribute before the Freo/Hawks game to honour him and his contribution to football.
