Hooksey was always his own man, and that was one thing that I liked about him, and although I only met him briefly two years ago at a cricket coaching camp in Shepparton, but I was impressed by his professionalism, and generous approach to all the kids who came up to him.

R.I.P. HOOKSEY, gone too soon

Seeing as Victoria are scheduled to meet SA at the G from Friday, and that Hookesy would prefer to see the game being played, wouldn't it make sense to have a hearse go around the G on Friday or the weekend, so the fans can pay tribute to him?

I would have thought that he will be buried in his beloved home state?

Personally I think that this suggestion is a bit way out, I think he may be awarded a state funeral in either SA or VIC. I don't think that people need to see a hearse to be able to pay tribute.

Jesus.....I know you mean well Pazza but a hearse going round the G? Christ what's next? a public viewing on the centre square? Let it go:(

After a brillant innings cut short by circumstances beyond your control, enjoy the standing ovation of the fans as you return to the pavilliion in the sky for some quiet drinks with some of crickets greats.

For many this would be the first true childhood sporting hero to die, and what a shocking and unnatural way for it to happen.

Edit: Danny Green you are skating on really thin ice. I've specifically requested you do not post or repost the address details (regardless of where else the information may be posted on the web) as more probably than not there are innocent people at the same address who too are being affected by this situation, and we don't want Bigfooty involved in promoting things such as the personal address of the alledged assailant. Please do not do it again. - Danni

Let's get this bloke that did this to Hooksey out in the centre of the MCG in the next one-day game there and during the lunch break we can all go out and take a free swing at him. The bastard deserves it. :( RIP Hooksey....

Found this over at Cricinfo:

'Eye-witnesses said that Hookes was trying to break up a row between a group of bouncers and the wives and girlfriends of players of the Victorian cricket team. "The sound [of Hookes being hit] was sickening," one witness told reporters. "It was an ego thing [for the bouncers]. They wanted a fight. That's the way it looked like." '

Don't want to make any comment on it, just that it's the only information I can find on the incident.

I'm shell-shocked. I was just watching a highlights DVD of the Centenary Test a couple of days ago, watching him smack those fours. Simply can't believe it.

My thoughts go out to his family. Thanks for the memories, Hookesy. RIP.

As has been said by many a fan, a man cut down in his prime. David was enjoying great success with the Vics and making them a powerhouse and doing it his way, im sure his memory will long live in Victorian cricket.

He was a fantastic cricketer, but perhaps even more honourable he was a great bloke. I never had the honour of meeting him personally, I only saw him a few weeks ago at the 'G from a distance. But you could tell by his commentary and his general demenour, just how good of a bloke he was.

Being only 19, I dont have any memories of Hookes in his playing days, I do know however he was my mothers favourite player when she was growing up.

This is a tragedy, and I hope the disgusting low life SOB who did this gets everything thats coming. But knowing our crap legal system, he will only get Manslaughter and be out in 3 years. But enough on him, lets remember a great life, a life that was too short, but a great life nonetheless.

David's passion for the sport of cricket will live long and live large in not only Victorian and South Australian cricket, but also in Australian cricket. I will miss that familiar voice in the commentary box when Australia plays. I am proud to say I was at the MCG for David's last game involved in cricket, and how fitting that it be played between Victoria and SA.

His guidance has brought Victoria back as a dominant force in the Domestic scence, and his guidance from above will see Victoria continue to have success, and WHEN they lift the Pura Cup, it will be in memory of one David Hookes.

R.I.P. David Hookes, gone but not forgotten.

Been struggling for something to say, but I think you summed it up perfectly.

RIP David.

I really am shocked that this has happened. It not only shows the mortality of humans, but the indecency, cowardess and downright pathetic aspect of us aswell. It is sickening that this can happen.

My sincere condolences go out to the family, friends, fans of David Hookes who are obviously feeling a whole lot worse than I am. I'm not even old enough to have seen the guy play cricket, or to really know his achievements...I really can't begin to wonder how those who were close to him feel.

RIP David Hookes.

RIP David William Hookes

As a Victorian, I have embraced you as one of us. With your passion for cricket and football you were a joy to listen to. I will be there this Friday to watch the saddest days of cricket I will ever witness.

The state of society is a sad one. And I am not hopeful of society or the legal system changing course for the better.

:(

I write this post with a heavy heart.

Just after 7.30 p.m tonight on the way home from the gym, in my car with the sun and wind on my face, i heard that David Hookes had lost his fight for life.

A man of 48. To many of you an age that is decades away, or the age of your parents, but from someone closer to Davids age than many of you, it really tends to make me question my own mortality, and absolute good fortune that there by the grace of god go I.

At 20 y.o you are gunna live for ever, at 30, death is something that happens to someone else, at 40, it is something that becomes more prevelant. When a contemporary is killed it becomes almost personal.

Sorry to carry on, but the death of Hookes is something we all should learn from. Our life is so fleeting and fragile, go to work, the footy, a pub, down the shops and you may not come back. Hit your head and you could just end it all in seconds.

Never take your life for granted, never presume that death happens to someone else, and enjoy every second you have on this planet.

And enjoy the sun on your face and wind in your hair while you can.

David Hookes, your death is such a sensless waste.

May you rest in peace.

Today South Australia lost one of its greatest sons. David Hookes was a childhood hero of mine, like he was for many kids in SA. Our Shield side was fairly average at that time (late 80's for me) but Hookesy was always there leading from the front, smashing the ball to and over the boundary. He gave us something to be proud about, made us proud to be South Australian. When I think of Hooksey I think of two things most readily. First he always tipped West Torrens to win the flag in The Advertiser's pre-season Footy preview (someone had to!) But secondly and most vividly I see him batting at the City End wearing the red SA Cap & sweater and smashing yet another ball over the Vic Richardson Gates and keeping the scoreboard ticking over. As such I would urge the SACA to rename the Scoreboard at Adelaide Oval after Hooksey. It would be a fitting tribute to the man who kept it ticking over.

My condolences to Hooksey's family, friends and those at the SACA & VCA.

RIP Hooksey.
