One of the true beauties of British and Hollywood film. I absolutely adored watching Jean Simmons on screen. The way she moved, the way she spoke was graceful, yet captivating.
Possibly, her most memorable performance for me is that of Kanchi in the brilliant Black Narcissus
Was courted by Howard Hughes and her time at RKO saw Simmons in the wonderful noir, Angel Face alongside Robert Mitchum and directed by Otto Preminger.
Some of her other memorable films include; Guys and Dolls, Spartacus, Hamlet, The Robe, The Big Country, Clouded Yellow and one of my favourites - poignant run-of-the-mill MGM romances, Until They Sail, with another of my favourites, Paul Newman.
Perhaps others of later generations might remember her performance alongside Richard Chamberlain and Barbara Stanwyck in the saga The Thorn Birds.
RIP to a true English Rose
