He will be sadly missed by Chicagoans. He went to the same university downstate as my brother and ended up living in the Village of Oak Park Illinois where I was born. He was well known for his theater acting in Chicago. Whenever I saw him on TV I always expected to see him walking with a cane, something I now have to do myself. Memory eternal.

Wow. Was just reading about him and Frasier yesterday. Apparently the part of Martin was written just for him.

He was very good in Frasier. I don't mean this as a put down to the actors who played Roz and Daphne but if they weren't cast the show probably would've played out the same. Mahoney's Martin was at the heart of the show (almost in a clever way where you don't fully realise how much until it's all over) and there's definitely episodes that happened because of how good and convincing he was as dad to Frasier and Niles. I could write a lot about that show but it's definitely worth watching on its own merits and as a fascinating, long, indirect snapshot of just how much television comedy was changing around it (1993-2004). The last great laugh track sitcom and probably the greatest ever (British sitcoms that end after 7 episodes don't ****ing count.)

Not a Martin scene but...

He was also good in the HBO drama series In Treatment which is also quite good.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

I'm actually only now working my way through Frasier for the first time, sad news. :(

Did you hear the stuff about Grammar's real dad? Pretty sad and makes this even deeper.

Grammer's dad and sister were both murdered before he was 21. Maybe more than a kind sentiment behind the tweet.

Strangely enough, Mahoney was only 15 years older than him. I think I read once he dyed his grey or greyer than it really was in the early seasons.

I never knew that about his dad and sister how sad

And I thought he was 9 years older? Kelsey was about 43 when Frasier started and John would have been about 52?

Indeed a sad loss, instant pang on hearing the news.

Obviously most fondly remembered for Frasier, but he was in so many movies from the mid 80s to 90s, and always in a different type of role (Moonstruck, Barton Fink, Say Anything, Reality Bites, Primal Fear, etc.). More recently was on S2 of In Treatment.

Yesterday I watched the episode where Niles had bypass surgery. What a creative episode. The last scene which showed Niles in the hospital with Daphnee having her second child in a future time almost had me in tears. Martin's acting as a worried father was superb.
