Well it's all in the eye of the beholder JB - his best was very good indeed but the gap to his other days was regrettable whereas Bowie simply didn't have off days.

You need to remember also that Bowie and Bolan in particular were cutting edge pioneers - their 'off days' were so far above the best of their contempories and their best was just mind blowing.

As for myself well I grew up in the heavy rock days of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple - not as showy as the two B's but simply blitzing entertainers.
Not to mention Black Sabbath

AFL threw him under the bus in 2011.

From what I read he was sick, no soundcheck, a few other things. Oh well.

Oh and Bowie is peerless. Don't compare him unless you find another modern artist who had been mostly relevant, working and breaking new ground for 47 years!

Gil likes to use it as a funny story to show he’s not perfect.

The sirens are screaming, and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight
There's a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
There's evil in the air and there's thunder in the sky,
And a killer's on the bloodshot streets
And down in the tunnels where the deadly are rising
Oh, I swear I saw a young boy down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat

Great lyrics to start a song

now you’re talking… a vastly much under appreciated outfit those lads..
I was at their concert at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds on their only tour out here.

I can still see Noddy standing right on the front edge of the stage in the relentless drizzle, reaching out to the crowd and screaming his lungs out with that ice pick voice of his.

They weren't subtle and they weren't sublimely talented but by god Noddy could grab the audience by the throat and lift them up off their bums whilst setting their feet moving.

Best dance group ever.

Total agreement and he wasn't 1/10th the showman that people like Bowie, Bolan and Ferry were.
Absolutely wrong, Meat was an amazing performer. The meatloaf character he portrayed on stage was huge, bombastic and every song he sung he’d tell a story and put his heart and soul into it.
You obviously haven’t been to many meatloaf concerts if you are saying he wasn’t 1/10 the performer of those others. He was different, you can’t compare Bowie and Meatloaf it’s not fair to either of them. Meat, brought to life the songs of Jim Steinman which were in themselves short plays, rock Opera at its best. Yes I’m biased as I’m a huge fan over the over the top lyrics and 8 minute songs that take you on an emotional journey.
RIP Meatloaf.

RIP Meatloaf. One of the greatest.
Where do you stand on Queen?

Be as angry as you want Aussie that isn't my opinion so lets move on.

I think it’s disingenuous to continue to judge his life on that one Australian performance.

I, like many, re-listened to Bat Out of Hell on Friday night. It really is a cracker and he was an amazing talent back then. The power and the emotion all through the album set a standard in rock opera and is a defining album for a generation. Not many artistists can claim that. Meat was also great in Fight Club too.

I won't judge his life for that embarassing performance but you can't excuse it and it's now part of Aussie sporting folk lore performances. Whether he was sick, jet lagged, or simply delusional (that he was capable / fit enough), the performance came off like a drunken karakoe parody at the end of year footy trip away in a Bali bar.

Also this bit from 2012 kind of speaks (to me) volumes about this character. Just as embarassing of say, I dunno, a board member that's not eligible to vote either. 😝

"The singer Meat Loaf, who last night endorsed Mitt Romney at a raucous rally in Ohio, is not registered to vote in his home state of Texas, and this week sought a mail ballot from a Los Angeles home that he sold 17 months ago, records show."

RIP Meat - thanks for the albums. 👍

That last is just uncalled for from a board member - is not anyone's business but Meat Loaf's.

As I've said before his best was top notch but he didn't have the sustained high performance of the truly top artists.
