RIP - Sir Roger Moore

Always fondly remember Roger Moore in two roles. First as Simon Templar, the Saint. The music, the car, the sign of the saint above his head the feel of the show was just excellent. The second as Lord Brett Sinclair in the Persuaders! With Tony Curtis as two globe trotting playboys getting up to mischief as well as solving the odd murder or two. Good fun.

As Bond, he stayed in the role way too long. "A view to a kill (1985)" was practically all stunt doubles doing even the basic stuff.

Still, he had a good life, Rest In Peace.

The first Bond to go? Sad, I was always hoping for some sort of onscreen reunion and given the nostalgia motivated media industries it seemed feasible currently.

He had a good run, and lived a life better than most people ever will.

I was going to go to bed, but now i think i will watch The Man With The Golden Gun instead.
Agree. Didn't realise he was almost 90. That's a fair crack.

And that's my favourite Moore Bond movie.

Spy Who Loved Me is a great, probably the best example of the over the top, cheesy Bond flick. It didn't wander in to badness and eye rolling sillyness, but it was by no means a grounded film. Only Moore could have pulled that off.

Seen a few of his James Bond movies. Channel 10 seemed to show them often when I was younger. Can't remember seeing him in anything else. If you'd told me he died 20 years ago I would've believed you  He did not look young as James Bond.

Barry Nelson and David Niven were the first Bonds, obviously not in the big Saltzman/ Broccoli productions though. They're both long gone.

A reunion of some sort would have been great.

Think he was actually older than Connery ironically.

David Niven was Sir James Bond in Casino Royale in 1967. Sean Connery had already played Bond at least 4 times before it's release.

I grew up in the era of Sir Roger Moore as James Bond, the first Bond film I saw in the cinemas was 'The Spy Who Loved Me' and I have been to an opening day viewing for every Bond film since. It remains one of my favourite Bond films of all, and he followed it up with 3 fairly solid films, although the final 30 minutes of Moonraker was a little embarrassing. While he may not be my favourite Bond, I do think he did a wonderful job and they are an enjoyable series of films.
Outside of his Bond films, others films of his that I liked include 'The Wild Geese', 'The Cannonball Run' and 'Escape to Athena', which co-starred friend and fellow UNICEF ambassador Claudia Cardinale (see avatar) who he worked with in Africa on a number of occasions.

He was a fine actor, a real gentleman and great humanitarian.

RIP Sir Roger

I thought he was great as Bond but his films were some of the weakest in the series
Moonraker was ludicrous

I agree with your 'Moonraker' comments, although the first half of the film was pretty good, it's just the storyline led towards a ludicrous final 45 minutes.
The Man with the Golden Gun and A View To A Kill were pretty weak as well, but the other I really enjoy.

'The Spy Who Loved Me' is a classic, Roger and the film had the right mix of toughness and comedy, and while the storyline was typically outlandish, it was executed with a precision that is equal to the best Connery Bond's.

And after the stupidity of Moonraker, they dialled it back for 'For Your Eyes Only' and produced a greatly under rated film. It's one of my favourites because it's a grittier, more down to earth film with some wonderful comedic moments, such as the car security system from hell and the car chase in 2CV.

Roger Moore Bond's had the best henchmen...

I suspect I may be a few years older than you, and therefore was lucky to grow up with the best, and the real Bond.

Sean Connery and his films still are the best.

You sound like you are my father's age. I was only about 6 years old when he took me to see 'The Spy Who Loved Me'.

I do agree about Connery being the best Bond, but Sir Roger was a pretty good one as well.

Agreed. Live and Let Die & The Man With the Golden Gun were ripping Bond films.

Hm, the march of time... I was also about 6 when I saw my first Bond film in a cinema.

Thunderball.

OHMSS is actually probably close to my favourite. Only watched it for the first time a few years back, always passed on it in the video shop as a kid just assuming it would be crap because some unknown Lazenby guy did it.

FYEO is probably the best Moore one.

It's a bit funny given the character's 'Englishness' and more recently the 'Oh **** off a black guy can't play him' chatter that 5 of the movies don't even have a British actor in the title role.

Aussies have always been around the mark when the Bond role comes up.
