Here's one of my issues; not the main concern - that's the seeming lack of effort - but something that just happened on field crystalised it.

Hollands gets the ball hard up on the boundary, and breaks clear. He's got space in front of him, from 30-40m. He runs 10, and spots TDK on the HFF, and hits a pass to a space where TDK is the only one who can mark the ball. You look at that kick, and it looks to be both well weighted and a good disposal.

TDK loses control of the entirety of his lower half, and turns what is a tricky mark into a ball going over his head. The ball is turned over.

Now, there are a few issues with this passage.

Firstly, Hollands choosing to kick. He had no-one within 15m of him. He was moving forward at a reasonable rate, and there was no-one chading him. Why didn't he keep running?

When you have the ball in hand, you have control over it. Disposal is always a risk, because it is between possessions that intercepts occur; a miscued kick, an intercept mark, some giraffe forgetting how to ****ing use their legs at the wrong moment, you get it. But if you take a bounce and run those extra 10-15m, that kick doesn't need to go down the line to the HBF, but can be directed 30m out from goal; in short, a half chance turned into a deep entry. Keep running, and force them to come and stop you; it draws players away from their defense and closer to the ball as well as guaranteeing a deeper entry.

Then, you've got the kick itself. It was a kick to a 1 against 2. Sure, it was weighted pretty well - it found the space between the two and the boundary pretty bloody well - but it also required TDK to leap at it to get it. If you do this, you risk things going wrong; guess what, something did.

If you're gonna do that, go to a 1 on two, that kick had better be ****ing perfect. Not lace out; not, a spectacular effort considering the circumstances; hitting them where they will be without them needing to break stride. If you cannot do this, it's the wrong option.

Then - finally - we get to TDK. He didn't leap for the ball. It wasn't that far out of his way. His legs got tangled as he moved, and he almost marked it. If this kick wasn't perfect, it was pretty ****ing darn close; he saw the only patch of grass near you, and hit it. It was ****ing excellent vision, and a wonderful pass in an afternoon to forget, and you just ****ed it up because you're too tall for your own good and I don't think you wanted it.

[PRESS CONFERENCE – POST-MATCH ROUND XX: CARLTON VS NORTH MELBOURNE]

Michael Voss (Carlton Head Coach) enters the room, sits at the table, and adjusts the microphone.

Reporter 1:
Vossy, a tough one tonight. Can you sum up your thoughts after that performance?

Michael Voss:
Yeah, it's clearly not where we want to be. Full credit to North — they came with real intensity, and we didn't match it. We were outplayed in just about every aspect, and that starts with me. We’re extremely disappointed with the performance.

Reporter 2: Were you shocked by the lack of effort, especially given what was at stake?

Michael Voss:
I wouldn’t say shocked — we knew North’s form had been building. But yeah, the lack of pressure and urgency was really disappointing. We pride ourselves on being a contested, hard-working side, and tonight we didn’t bring that. That’s unacceptable.

Reporter 3: You were down by 50 at half-time. What was the message to the group at that point?

Michael Voss:
The message was simple — respond. Show some fight, show some pride in the jumper. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the response we were after. That’s something we’ll review heavily during the week.

Reporter 4: How do you explain the drop-off from the side that beat [insert last opponent] just a week ago?

Michael Voss:
Footy’s a brutal game when you don’t turn up. We weren’t mentally switched on. Our contest work was poor, our transition was reactive, and structurally we broke down far too easily. There’s no excuses — the responsibility sits with all of us, but particularly me.

Reporter 1: Were there any positives to take away?

Michael Voss:
Look, not many. A few individuals kept having a crack, but overall we didn’t play the type of football that represents this club. That’s what stings the most.

Reporter 2: Do you expect changes to the side next week?

Michael Voss:
Yeah, we have to look at everything. Selection’s on the table, roles are on the table, and so is effort. We’ll go back to the basics and pick a side that reflects our values.

Reporter 3: What do you say to the fans after a night like that?

Michael Voss:
We apologise — that’s not the standard we expect, and it’s not good enough. Our supporters deserve better. We’re going to cop our whack this week, and rightly so. But we’ll respond.

[Voss nods firmly, stands up and walks off without further questions.]

Our ruckmen are getting smashed by Jack Darling 😂
