I didn't say that. I have no doubt that there are people who get noticed and can't sing. I'm saying, if he's so brilliant, why did it take something this? Sure, there are plenty of good singers that are never noticed either...and if they're really determined, they can work their arse off, instead of just queuing up for a spot on a show like Idol. (I think I sound rather narrow minded there, but I don't mean to be.)

Well, I can't really answer that fully, I don't know about the backgrounds of most of the singers on these shows. However, in Guy's case, it's well documented that he sang regularly at a church, and worked as a singing/music teacher in addition to writing and recording his own songs. He wasn't exactly in the dole queue, he just never got his big break until Australian Idol (he's not exactly your normal heart throb), and I don't think he's necessarily less deserving because he came from a tv show. Whether he and all the others are actually any good at what they do is a matter of opinion.

I will concede there are many poor vocalists who are getting contracts and exposure from these programs. Time will weed these performers out and they'll rightly fall on the scrapheap.

There are some awesome singers on that show (I've only ever seen little bits and pieces of it), but if they really cared about singing ability, surely it would be the judges that decide who goes through, and not the populace?
Yeah true, but you'd know that's just a ploy to attract viewers and is another whole argument (for another day!).

Just thinking back to the old Popstars, I think that was purely decided by the judges?? Memory is a bit hazy but I think so.....anyway, if so, that didn't help those groups at all!

what he said

Take into consideration, they don't just decide one day to line up and think, "Oh I might be able to sing". Hard work is usually behind most of them. Guy had demos...tons and tons of demos that he sent out, and also the church singing in the Christian community. He had tried and he decided to try a little competition that may get him a record deal. Fortunetly, for most of us, he came, he saw, he sang, he conquered. :)

How can you say that? Guy has a great voice. It's Shannon that can't hold a note.

Fair enough. I can't argue with that, but it's still my opinion that he can't sing (so shoot me for it :p), and I still don't like him either. Or any media-produced 'artist'. But yes, time will tell, and full credit to him I guess if he does manage to succeed (on his own).

On another note: who's that chick that won the latest American Idol? Am I also alone in thinking she can't sing? I turned the TV on, mid-song, and nearly fell over laughing when I realised it was the finale...:| She doesn't seem to have a wide range at all.

Diana. Fantasia showed her up every week, and good on her for doing that. All Diana was, was a crowd pleaser...like Millsworth. Never deserved to go that far.

How Diana and Jasmine got so far in the competition over George, La Toya, and Jessica astounds me! They all have more talent in their pinky fingers compared to D and J. However if you saw this one, red headed singer that was in the top 10, you would know that some people in the states just might be disadvantaged in the hearing department. that kid didnt deserve to even get past the producer's table.

And therein lies the problem; the whole show is a "crowd pleaser" as you say; most of them don't care who can and can't sing, as long as the person is good-looking or has some mass appeal. Which is why I won't watch it, or rate it and its contestants, until the singing ability is judged, by the judges. (Which of course would destroy the point of it. Can you imagine how the teenyboppers would react to that?)

Back onto Rob Mills...

He doesn't even have much originality... Take this line. The first line is in the song... The second line is an improvement that I found in a couple of seconds..

"On your knees, such a tease, bitter-sweet" (I think thats the line)
"On your knees, such a tease, blow me please"

Which one would be better? The former is in the song, the latter would give him some cred :p

Ummm, Fantasia won so I'll assume you were talking about her whereas AngelEyes assumed you were talking about Diana.

Personally, I couldn't stand Fantasia's screeching (not singing). It made by brain hurt. She did lack range. I would definitely call her an attention-seeking performer rather than a singer-performer.

Diana was the real singer out of those two, IMO.

totally agree. how fantasia managed to win is beyond me. apparently it was really close though, like 51% - 49%.
