Didnt he have a cracking game on the weekend.
When the game was up for grabs in that last quarter he won a couple of real hard ball gets and Im sure this would 've lifted the team.

Im hardly missing Stenglien.

Rob has always been a dependable footballer. Not as flashy as your McLeod type of player but always gets the job done. He does have his off days but they are few and far between these days. When he was originally delisted, I thought someone was going to snaffle and we would have lost out. I am glad we have him and he played a good game on the weekend.

He's so strong through the hips and as tough as teak.
I loved his long range goal last week.

Delisted!! I dont remember that:confused:

2002 if IIRC and then we re-drafted him. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. ;)

His best game on the weekend for the club that I can remember. Was a clearance king.

Even though I admire Stenglein - his decision to move back to Perth was one of the best things to happen to the Crows. Up stepped a capable Shirley into Stenglein's role and Scott Thompson has proved to be a fantastic all round player. It was a good example of the trade system being a win-win for everyone.

As for Shirley, he is a great example of what can be achieved if given a chance and if the hard work is done. Not flashy, but I'm sure his midfield team mates would appreciate having him in the trenches with them.

There was a VERY strong rumour at the time that Denis Pagan was VERY interested and was going to draft Shirley. Remember those were the years when Carlton didn't have the early draft picks because of salary cap breaches.

So we took Jericho with our 1st pick (3rd round via Richmond) and then re-drafted Shirley and our 3rd and final pick was Begley.

Story around the traps was that we were going to draft Begley before Shirley but once we found out about Carlton's intentions we had to take him with our second pick.

I was one of the many who were wrong about Rob.

He adds plenty of hardness to the midfield and would be one of the first half dozen players picked each week.

The boy needs to be congratulated for squeezing out an AFL career with a limited skill set compared to some of the "so-called" stars.

I love how he goes about his work so quietly but so effectively each week. He seems to get under the radar of alot of opposing teams:thumbsu:

Post number 11....

What took you so long?

(BTW, I see Keiron Dyer is in the England squad - Is that his first National squad for a ages or am I out of touch?)

I was pretty sure he played against Spain didn't he?

Takes awhile to get here from the bushes outside Rob's house.

He was given the full 90 minutes in the friendly against Spain in February (Roeder went apenuts and rightly so) and he played a halfhour against Andorra.

Such a disappointment. Could've been anything if not for his unreliable body and attitude.

Great post.

Was a win-win trade though as Stenglein was just what the Eagles needed.

Couldn't agree more.

That whole trade has been terrific for us and our mid-field.

Fortunately I don't have to eat humble pie on this one because I've been a Rob Shirley man when many weren't. :)

As Glengown says he is THE example in the Crows of what sheer dedication, effort and application can achieve. :thumbsu:

Not only did we do well for our midfield in the trade week, we also did a fantastic job in the draft that year.

Stenglein to WC for pick 12 and 28.
Pick 12 to Melbourne for Scott Thompson

Then we went on to recruit the following players

John Meesen (8)
Nathan Van Berlo (24)
Chad Gibson (28)
Ivan Maric (40)
Chris Knights (56)

John Hinge (rookie)
Jonathon Griffin (rookie)

Thats as good a trade and drafting period as one could possibly hope for. In one trade week and one draft pool, we were able to completly re-stock our ruck department and added some fantastic onballers. Trading Stenglein also made way to Robert Shirley to take his game to another level, and he did just that.

2004 will go down in history as one of our best years in terms of recruiting. What Geelong did to their list in 2001 draft, we did in 2004.

IMHO Top Effort :thumbsu:

Rob is awesome. Consistently nullifies the opposition's key midfielder, sacrifices his own game week after week and is always hard at the ball and generally at the bottom of a pack. We've been "Rob fans" from way back - hence our "Go Shirls" banner. My son has even name his cat "Rob" in honour of the great man.

No offence, but I'm eternally grateful we didn't have to name the cat after Graham Johncock. I can handle yelling out "come on Rob" whereas the other ......... will not be a big fan with the neighbours.
