"Mark Harvey is contracted beyond this season, but he knows the heat is on. His success rate with the Dockers hovers around 30 per cent and it is likely to get worse before it gets better. After years of chopping and changing its recruiting policy, Fremantle has finally settled on youth. The question is, though, can Harvey develop it? Maybe the club's list manager and former Freo skipper Chris Bond is the man. Or Kangaroos coach Dean Laidley, who is a West Australian. It will be at least six years before this club can consider a flag, and even then dozens of things would have to go right. Whoever coaches the Dockers needs strength, discipline and direction."

I usually cant stand wallsy, but he hasnt said anything untrue in that quote, i agree with him 100% except for the chris bond/dean laidley part, i wouldnt think either would be a good fit for freo if harvey was to leave

Re: Robert Walls -

I find most of what he says just rubbish, and he usually has no idea about the FFC, but that is pretty much spot on.

"It will be at least 6 years before this club can think of a flag, and even then a dozen things would have to go right"

Where does this 6 years estimate come from, and what dozen things is he talking about?

when you consider that the following will be gone in 3-6 years
mcpharlin, pavlich, haselby, headland, tarrant, solomon and sandilands all who are in our best 18, i can definetly see how it will take 6 years to rebuild, and that isnt including the reality that GC17 and possibly an 18th side are coming in, if we dont draft right we could be sellar dwellers for a long long time

Re: Robert Walls

Except for the mention of Dean Laidley, what was wrong with that article?

Because bar Terry Wallace, everyone else gets the benefit of the doubt.

It's abundantly clear that both us and Melbourne don't have the cattle, but according to Walls, Harvey is shit and Bailey should be given a chance to develop his squad.

the perception is that fremantle with players such as the following: pavlich, mcpharlin, sandilands, tarrant, hayden and hasleby have a core group of very talented footballers, and are completely underachieving, while melbournes list is full of duds, bailey has less to work with so is getting the benefit of the doubt, also harvey doesnt necessarily present himself the best. i would say that is why harvey is percieved to be under more pressure than melbourne

Bingo!

This is why we cop feedback like this, we have had a solid list over and over for years, and have underperformed. If we had the right staff managing trading/recruiting we could have built a premiership side around key players. Six years is a pretty good estimate in my mind because we wont have the senior players to rely on in the next couple of years (Pav doesn't look like he's in any danger of signing on again any time soon).

Can Harvey develop the youth? I'm not sure anyone can be certain of that 4 weeks in. Ibbotson, Palmer, Mayne and Hinkley all showed good signs in 2008 and Suban, Hill and Broughton have looked good so far in 2009, with De Boer and Clarke banging on the door. By the end of this season there may be an inkling of an answer to the question, but the jury is out right now and Harvey must be given the benefit of the doubt.

The last sentence is interesting when Laidley's name is one that has been mentioned. Self-discipline is clearly lacking in his regular outbursts and is probably not what is required for a young group of players.

Not to mention the Chicken gate incident. Red rooster would not be happy!

Our best chance is within the next 3 years while Pav is still good and we still have guys like Mcpharlin Hayden etc around.
Need the new guys to step up next year and give us good solid performances every week.
If we cant get there in the next 3 years then yes it could take another 3 years after that before we get there.
As we have no key position players ready to take over from them and dont even think we have any on the list that can develop into kpp.

Stupid Wallsy
If we are 6 years off Melbourne are 10 years off
Nth melbourne are 8 yrs off
Ess 8 yrs off

Completely disagree.

Melbourne has a spine of youngsters developing, mainly.

We have a spine of senior citizens and it's a tough call if we are going to be able to replace all, or even some, before they are gone.

But what is this, "West" Australian he talks about? I'm not sure I'm familiar with this state.

See how we played tonight.
That is why we have our best shot within the next 3 years.
If we can get all our good experienced players playing to their ability and the young guys stepping up we will have a chance.

If our good experienced players continue to be good 1 week then crap for the next few games.
Then yes Walls is almost right an we dont have any hope for over 3years.

By good an experienced im talking mundy, johnson, schammer etc etc
