Warnock quits Dockers

AAP | September 10, 2008 04:44pm

YOUNG ruckman Robert Warnock has told the Dockers he wants to leave the club and return to Victoria.

The Dockers said it had not been able to convince the emerging big man to stay with the club, and he had decided to return to his home state for family reasons.

“I have enjoyed my time at the club and with the playing group and coaches immensely, so it is a very tough decision to leave,” Warnock said.

“I believe that Fremantle is on the right track and has a bright future but this is simply a personal decision to head home to be closer to my family in Melbourne.

“My management will be working proactively with the club to secure the best possible result for Fremantle."

erest from Melbourne - where his brother Matthew plays - and Carlton, who are eager to team up Matthew Kreuzer with another quality tap specialist.

The Demons collected the wooden spoon this season after notching just three wins, meaning they will have first pick in the pre-season draft and could pick up Warnock without having to compensate Fremantle.

Earlier today, Dockers coach Harvey said he had done everything possible to convince Warnock to remain a Docker

"Obviously the longer it goes the more uncertain you become at times," Harvey said of the negotiations with Warnock.

"We've done all we can to try to keep Robbie at Fremantle, so now the decision will be based upon what he wants to do.

"Trade week's a month away so it's not an immediate answer (we are seeking), we'll see what happens,'' he said prior to Warnock making his decision.

Last month, Harvey accused former Dockers coach and now Demons football manager Chris Connolly of ambushing Warnock.

Harvey was filthy that Connolly, Melbourne coach Dean Bailey and a group of players made a powerpoint presentation to Warnock at Demon headquarters in their bid to lure the Victorian back home.

Warnock, who has played in the shadows of 211cm ruckman Aaron Sandilands since being snared with pick No.42 in the 2005 national draft, has just 21 games to his name but is rated as one of the brightest young ruck prospects in the AFL.

He is expected to command in excess of $1 million over the next three years.

The Dockers are also desperate to re-sign 23-year-old midfielder/defender David Mundy, who is attracting strong interest from several Melbourne clubs, including Richmond and Hawthorn.

"David's very much a required player and we've moved him into the midfield," Harvey said.

"It's a big part of what we are doing going forward."

Meanwhile, Harvey confirmed football operations manager Chris Bond had held informal talks with Western Bulldogs assistant coach Leon Cameron about a possible move to the Dockers.

Fremantle are on the lookout for two new assistant coaches following the departure of Peter German and Robert Shaw.

The word in Perth is Carlton are the front runners......

Cameron Wood went for Pick 13 or something... What is Warnock worth to you guys?

I have a bad feeling our pick 24 will be offered, infact i'm pretty sure it will be, especially if he nominates us as his preferred club. :thumbsd:

He's worth more than pick 24. If thats all we get, Freo will get truly ripped off.

While you may bitch and moan about what your club may offer. Anything outside a top 5 pick is terrible for Fremantle. Not saying we'll get one.

But ruckman are so hard to find, we finally had two amazing rucks, then this happens.

Freo supporters would prefer to keep him but he's decided to go home.

Not one ruckman in this draft will definately be better than him. Only Natainui and Vickery come with bigger reputations and both are touted top 10 picks.

I would take pick 24. Better than him walking into the demons via the PSD

But isnt Collingwood regretting that? Wood is doing so poorly that Chris Bryan is still playing football. A speculative player with lots of promise at this stage. Not saying he isnt worth a top pick but all he is now is TALL.

He was pick 42 in the 2005 national draft, pick 24 is a decent pick or a suitable trade, otherwise he can end up in the PSD & Melb will get him for NIL

Stop underselling him.

We might get an AFL quality HBF with that pick. Maybe. If they secure him, their getting a career of a lead ruckman. They've even missed the development years.

If you were to take a ruckman in the draft at pick 24. Chances are he wouldn't go as well as Warnock. Thats why i said top 5 pick. Because thats what it would take to secure Vickery. Who on reputation may be as good.

In the last 5 drafts i could only think of 2 or 3 ruckman who have made a bigger impact and have as much potential as him.

Pick 24 is good for both parties.
Carlton are receving an exciting, young and athletic Ruckman which is what we need while Freo, who already have Sandilands boosting their ruck stock, get a low second rounder which they can use to either secure another good ruckman or a different KPP seeing as there are plenty of those in this draft.

I'm not under selling him. The fact is all he has done is show glimpses of potential. Pick 24 would be about right IMO.

Top 5 pick is ridiculous, Carlton struggled to give that for Judd last year.

How about a pick and a player? Pick 24 and a player Hartlett or Edwards, what do you guys think?

Finally, a Freo supporter who doesn't pump up Warnock's tyres every two seconds.

shit i thought he was a high draft pick. Given hes done practically nothing and its not like it would be a waste of picking him up with a top 10 pick for Freo, 24 would be about right. Can he mark?

Why sell the farm for him when he can walk into the PSD for zip?

I wouldn't even be offering up pick #24 for him. Perhaps #40 and a fringe player, take it or leave it.

You're kidding yourself mate. Talk about reputation all you like but you don't trade a top 5 pick on reputation. We gave 3 and a player for a bloke who's a premier midfielder - something he has proven over his career. Warnock MAY be good. He MAY be great. But he hasn't shown it consistently. If it comes down to Melbourne and Carlton bidding for him then pick 24 ain't a bad offer. If he nominates Carlton we will have the whip hand as he is out of contract and Freo will take pick 24 if the only other option is to go uncompensated for him and let the Dees get him in the PSD. The real question is - do we want to offer our pick 24?

Yes but we don't want to be Collingwood do we? I think #24 is good and like I said maybe a player.

Hasn't done enough just yet to justify a first round pick and $1mil over 3 years IMO...

From a guy who has followed his career pretty closely i'll let you know what your getting.

Was sought out by Fremantle pre-draft regarding his eating habits. Entered the draft. Looking like the following:

http://www.gettyimages.com/Search/Detail.aspx?axd=DetailPaging.Search|1&axs=0|80888934%2c80273511%2c77540555%2c57029552%2c55828076|0&id=55828076

Most clubs had doubts over an anorexic looking 204cm player ever making it to the required physical level. Turns out he was eating like a horse and was at the end of a recent growth spurt.

The thing Fremantle liked about him was his excellent endurance. Was elite amongst potential draftee's and beat many players smaller than him. Beep test from memory was 13.1.

Came to the club and put on 10kg over 1 preseason. Started in the WAFL reserves and was clearly too classy and found himself in the senior side after a handful of games. Was way ahead of development. The club had signed him on a 3 year contact from the start given where he was starting.

By the end of his debut season he was a regular at WAFL level. Still looked skinny as a rake.

Preason 2, manages to put on another 10kg. Now into the high 80's. Still looked skinny but started to dominate in the WAFL. Justin Longmuir retired after 1 game in the 2007 season. Warnock got his chance mid way through the season with some stella form in the WAFL.

Subsequently Sandilands goes down with injury and Warnock is left to lead the ruck in his 2nd season at the club. (refer back to that picture again). Surprisingly he does exceptionally well. In games where Cox was meant to dominate, Warnock is clearing the ball and gathering possessions. He has his best game for season 2007 against Carlton. 16 possessions and 16 hitouts.

His most impressive stuff is when he chases down midfielders who try and go around him laying some big tackles. Very fast off the mark. Also he has more finesse than Sandilands in the tap work. Fremantle fans get overexcited and start claiming it'll be hard for Sandilands to get back the lead ruck.

Preseason 08 rolls around. He hurts his lower back. Gets games at the beginning of the year when he wasn't ready. Performs poorly and is dropped. He is now playing WAFL at West Perth. Mark Seaby, Kepler Bradley and Adam Campbell all playing their. So at best he's getting 50% time in the ruck, sharing the duties with Mark Seaby.

This when all the rumours of him leaving start. Eventually finds form and is brought back to the senior team. Does well in combination with Sandilands and eventually hurts his shoulder. His season ends early for surgery.

Here we are.

He's grown 2cm taller, he's now 206cm. Weighs in the mid 90's but is still shy of a mature body. Probably needs to shade a 100kg before he could bang bodies regularly with the top rucks. He's got the same armspan as Sandilands and a pretty good leap.

I rate Leuenberger slightly ahead of him at this stage. Kreuzer is a better forward/ruck but Warnock is a lead ruckman. So they are hard to compare.

Their aren't many better young ruckman running around at the moment. Maric from Adelaide seems to have recently made the big league. He is young and one of the better prospects going around.

I know what you're saying but if we can get a better deal and hold onto our 2nd rounder than that would be sensational. Freo would much rather get something for nothing and if he nominates us then we hold more cards than they do. Personally I'd like to see us keep pick 24 and look at our 3rd rounder plus a player. He hasn't shown enough yet and we can always use another decent pick in a deep draft.

Offer them pick 24, nothing more, nothing less.

If they take it, good, we'll gladly take Robbie for that pick.

If they don't, that's fine too, we're happy to keep the pick and either use it on a youngster in the draft, or trade it away as part of a different deal.

I doubt they'll get too many better offers than pick 24 anyway, Melbourne won't offer anything higher than that as they know they'll be in with a shot of getting him for nothing.
