I think we may end up taking Clay Beams with our second pick, but who we take with our first will depend on who gets taken ahead of us.

Can't see our first round pick being under 192cm myself.

Agree with the 1st Pick in the Rookie Draft should not be under 192cm:thumbsu:

I'm a big fan of Ah Chee, but we'll see who is available. Josh Donaldson is right at the top of my wish-list - Whoever gets him in the rookie draft is getting a steal, IMO.

He certainly presents a decent athletic package, Donaldson. I don't mind the idea of Ah Chee either, to be honest, because outside mids with pace/akills is still an area for us to look at... just not as pressing as KPD or crumbing small forward IMHO.

People are being too picky in saying that "we must draft a key position prospect" with our first rookie pick IMO.

The reality is that it is much harder to draft for a need in the rookie draft than it is in the national draft because there isn't the same level of choice. The vast majority of rookie players don't make it and the vast majority don't because they're simply not good enough. To say "this player will be a steal and that player isn't much chop", etc is very speculative because the reality is that only 1 or 2 rookies taken this year will ever be any good. Anyone we pick up will be heralded a great prospect but in a weakened draft, the majority of the leftovers will be dead set rubbish.

The pies have done fantastically well with rookies but in such a finite market you need to pick a player that you think has a chance of making it, regardless of type. There is no point drafting a KPP if you think there isn't a potential league standard one left over. There won't be any good KP forwards left over because it is much easier to pick the differences in talent levels between tall players meaning any good prospects will be gone. A defender might be available though but we should still pick best available.

The Rookie Draft is a way of taking a Chance on a KPP who has big Upside but long way to go as they don't take a Spot on the Senior List

YES! THANKYOU!
I've been saying this for the past week. good to see someone shares my view. As i said before, the last decent KKP taken in the rookie draft was Ben Rutten back in 2002. Will Thursfield (2005) may yet turn out ok. quality key position talls do not last til the rookie draft. if you want good KKP you get them in the national draft, plain and simple. there is a greater chance of finding a quality midfielder or smaller player in the rookie draft as they are more likely to slip through. therefore if there is a midfielder who we believe has a chance of making it in the big time, we should take them, rather than picking a KKP just for the sake of it

I haven't seen much of Ah Chee play (even though he was with Norwood at some point this year), but the description of him in the Inside Footy Draft Special said that he has potential as an athletic strong-tackling tagger, which to me makes him sound like he could evolve into a Byron Pickett type. IMO that sort of player could be handy for us down the track - a workman-like midfielder who's not a slow plodder, who can kick the occasional goal, and does the hard/dirty stuff while leaving our classier mids to focus on what they do best.

But why is that Exacly? Though you can still find a Descent KPP - You might not find a Gun but a Good Solid KPP
