Loses the third set 6-4. A real shame as he broke back twice in that 3rd set, and one of those was to 4-4 only to lose his serve again.

On to the draw now, hopefully Hewitt can get a nice draw being unseeded. Think it's usually done at around 8pm tomorrow night

Hewitt has a 0-3 record against Ivo, it's not a good matchup for him as it tends to go to tie-breaks and Lleyton is horrible in them,e spcially lately. On clay and best of 5 sets, it really is Lleyton's best chance to beat him and he really should, I'd be disappointed if he doesn't. He really should make the 3rd round hopefully, to face Nadal, I would really like to see that.

Tomic will get a nice test against kohlschriber, he's goign to get smashed but it will be interestign to see exactly where Bernard's game is at.

Stosur has got an ok draw, schiavone might seem like a tough match and it is but sam has beaten her the last 2 times they played, once on clay. Wickmayer might actually be the tougher matchup for her if she plays her in the second since Wickmayer has beaten Sam once. Or she could play little radwanska. Again, here she can make the third round providing she doesn't choke and hopefully can give dementieva agood test, oddly enoguh faced her in the third round at AO this year.

As for the other aussies, Groth has a nice draw to win a match in the first round. Dokic has a little bit of an old-timers match against sprem, try to keep the ball in jelena. And I hope Olivia enjoys her match with Kirilenko, same as Tomic, this will see where she is exactly at against the main tour and how far she eneds to improve.

I'll look at the draw more overall this weekend. Looking forward to Sunday.

Could have been worse draws for Hewitt, but could have been a lot better (see: away from Rafa). He's losing points regardless from this fortnight, but it just remains to be seen how many. I get the horrible feeling he'll go down to Karlovic.
 
Considering the Aussies have no chance, I hope Verdasco wins RG. Really want someone to knock Nadal off, and I loved his Aus Open games. Played some epics.

Yeah, it's annoying, even though Lleyton made the third round last year, he's defending 150 points when he will only get 90 if he makes the third round this time around.

It has played in his favour so far this year with the points being doubled, though. Admittedly it hasn't helped all that much when he's directly qualified for so few tournaments and has probably used up all his wildcards by now.

Looks to be a pretty uneventful opening day imo. Nothing too exciting.
Hewitt will probably lose, but could pull off a win. Ivanovic cause there's a very real possibility of her losing. Only if she beats herself. Azarenka/Vinci should be good value... Safin too. But thats about it... Day 2 will get the ball rolling.

And as for winners.
Since taking hold of no.1 spot Safina has been in red hot form. Taking out premiers in Madrid and Rome. She would've learnt alot from last years final, aswell as the abbomination at the AO and will be very hungry to grab that elusive slam. This is her best oppurtunity, contenders around her seem to be falling to pieces. Serena is still in terrible form, and faces Zakipolova up first who beat her earlier this year. Venus isn't much chop on clay. Ivanovic hasn't played a match since injuring her knee in Rome, and being the steaming hot/ice cold player she is, who knows? Zvonareva is still suffering from an ankle injury sustained in Charleston, so she will be severly underdone.
Jankovic, Kuznetsova, Dementieva & co. will of course be around the mark, but will again lack the killer punch to take the next step. Sharapova landed in the dream quarter. Petrova, suspect on clay. Kanepi, nothing special. Zvonareva, suspect ankle. But will still be a fair bit underdone, entirely evident after her 6-2 6-2 loss to Alona Bondarenko in Warsaw. Clay court specialists Suarez Navarro, Schiavone and Schnyder will cause some damage, as will Alona Bondarenko.

IMO, the winner will come out of the Safina/Ivanovic quarter. Safina is on absolute fire, and will have a fair bit of confidence at her back after her title wins. But if anyone can stop her streak, its Ivanovic. Ana plays her best tennis on clay no matter what form she's in, she performs. She will be keen to emulate last years performance, and points wouldn't go astray either. I havent checked for sure, but an early exit I hear could see Ivanovic fall to 15th in the world. Massive 12 month fall from grace if an early round exit eventuates. The knee is still suspect, with heavy strapping around it, but im expecting her to come out to play. Although after all that, Safina to take it out.

As for the Aussies, not expecting much from Dokic. Clays not her best look. A set will do, oh and some evidence of a smart game. Sprem isn't much chop lately, has been competing in ITF's and not doing too well i hear. Will be a bit of tension in this match, Borna Bikic used to be Karolina's coach, until they had a mass falling out and parted ways. There;s still unresolved tension around. Will watch with interest, not like anything is going to happen. Will probably mess with Sprem more than anyone else. Hopefully Jelena can get a win on the board and get a much needed confidence boost ahead of the grass courts.

Stosur is in major danger, huge. Schiavone is pretty ordinary hardcourts, but she goes alright on clay. Sam will need to get those chronic chokes under control if she's going to do anything here.

Rogowska, will be a good learning curve. Kirilenko should take care of her easily.

Groth, hopefully she'll get a win on the board. Coming up against a french wildcard, will have the corwd against her but she should take it out.

Mens, no point. Nadal. Last weeks final at Madrid was the loss he had to have. ;) Looking forward to seeing him extend his streak to 5. :thumbsu:

Hewitt and Tomic, not expecting much. Maybe a set from each, but thats about it. Will be good expreience for Tomic.

Finally looking forward to some good coverage, no thanks to the good people at channel 9. They can shove it. :)
 
As expected Zvonareva has pulled out, and been replaced by Katie O'brien. Weird decision to pull out after the draw was announced and after the OOP was announced. I guess it saves the confusion of shuffling a few seeds around.
Sharapova's quarter just got digustingly easier, only Petrova in her way.
 
Does anyone know what court the Fox coverage will be showing?
