Rolling Flag Contenders 2024

I've never seen a supporter base cope so badly with a regulation H&A win tbh.

Genuinely embarrassing stuff from Cats fans who have a reputation for being good sports and above all the nuffery that other supporter bases indulge in. Between you and Tilly it's as if someone from the Blues took a s**t in your cornflakes.
It's a pleasure to be surrounded by intellectuals with arguments amounting to "I know you are but what am I?". Yes, the people who have pointed that Carlton did not "deserve to win" and laughing at the desperate protests that insist otherwise are the ones coping. I get it - people hate being called whingers or excuse makers - but it's been there for all to see. And boy has it drawn some angry responses.

There is a reason there have been no other Geelong supporter interactions like that this year. Because Carlton supporters have vehemently declared that all we found out is Geelong are pretenders. They may well be - the odds of any specific team winning the flag are incredibly low - but it goes against the consensus views formed after the weekend's match. All that we learned are that both sides are strong but flawed, with Geelong executing the clutch moments better in their first face off this season.

FWIW I think Carlton have what it takes to go all the way this year, I reckon the only thing that could get in the way is mental. You guys have had this ability to get back in to games and win it, it just didn't happen on the weekend even though I expected it to.

I think the frustrations as Cats supporters though is that in generalising, there is so many people not willing to acknowledge Geelongs ability to be 7-0, rather that we need to make all various excuses for why it's happened other than the fact Geelong won.

Probably a great place to be in, but can still be frustrating at times

Anyhoo, best of luck to the Baggers. They're my #2 team this year, like WBD 16, Richmond in 17, Melbourne in 21 etc etc so if you win it this year, I'll hate you next year

It's not really frustrating, but it's impossible to ignore the collective:

Aaron Paul He Cant Keep Getting Away With This GIF by Breaking Bad

And not chuckle at it.

We have probably seen enough that Geelong are likely (not certain) for top 4 - moreso if a win arrives this weekend. From there who knows...straight setting like Melbourne is the main way to really prove your pretender credentials from there.

And agreed about Carlton, their current squad are a likable team and their club are overdue some success. So maybe we should cut their supporters some slack. But getting all chest beaty after a loss...that'll rarely not be made fun of. Just save it for the rematch, which will probably be another coin-flip game. If Geelong are beaten the Blues boys will do their rubbing it in the opposition face routine. But I hope our supporters aren't in denial and simply take it on the chin.

Nah there was a stat the other day on one of the footy shows that said you’re poor against teams in the top 4 when you play them. Think it’s over the past 2 - 3 years.
Not 2000 😂
That was a stat going back to 2000 relating to games we've played where we've been in the top 4 at the time vsing other top 4 teams... Basically the most useless stat of all time

Tim was far less salty and a lot more accurate.

Jake has confessed to doubling down on tipping against Geelong weekly, being furious when he gets it wrong and trying to explain why deep down he was sort of right.
That is a really good read 100% recommend to anyone who likes good analysis

I wouldn’t say useless. It does state that you’ve been traditionally poor against the good sides over a long period.
Of course it may change this year. Who knows.

For context the Twitter account that produced that stat specialises in finding odd or interesting historical quirks that are ultimately pointless but wind up whichever supporter bases clubs are involved. He covers pretty long time periods for robust data. :thumbsu:

It is essentially a test of which supporters fall under the "grrrr STOP IT!" RFC camp when 9th-mond is brought up. Your test result has been recorded.

Cats midfield is fairly weak at the moment which imo will be exposed by the Sydney teams and others.
We’ve heard that for 7 games bud…Danger was missing for multiple games then too and we went just fine.

It’s all about adaptability as per Tim’s article. When your Plan A fails, what’s your B, C and D? Scott is probably the best in the game at adapting on the fly in 2024.

They are literally responding to a Carlton supporter talking about Geelong, lol.
Like they are gonna pretend they didn’t post an article from a sooky Carlton supporter trying to explain why Carlton lost and that, “Geelong didn’t really win”

This has 2022 levels of cope

Tim’s article was fantastic. It broke down the numbers, he didn’t put personal opinion in there and he even went play by play for the last centre bounce and what happened.
That’s good journalism…unlike that opinion puff piece the other idiot wrote.

This, I just hope their supporters don’t go full Richmond…

Sydney GWS or Dees for me in that order.

Geelong's midfield is horrendous, can't see it standing up in finals and Hawkins looks absolutely cooked.

Blues small forwards are garbage and will need a perfect run with injury in that department to have any chance at it.

Pies missing Murphy is huge, their defense still looks a bit vulnerable to quality talls.

Bombers and Port not quite doing enough to convince me ATM but both should easily make finals and be up and about so who knows.

Sydney looking very good at the moment. GWS & Dees next. At the moment, that might be it!

This is why teams with depth will always challenge deep into September.

Carlton have little to no depth in the VFL.

Yes that would be correct at the moment. Given we had about 27-28 AFL listed players available the last couple of weeks I can't imagine we were expecting to have much depth rolling around in the VFL.

Anyone who makes the 8 can win the premiership so long as they're moving forward, good run with injuries.

I don't see any dominant standouts by any means.

Geelong/Sdyney/Carlton/GWS are probably the favorites

Brisbane/Collingwood are still good enough

Port need a lot of work on gameplan but if they can get it right in finals they might be a chance.

It's harder to see any contenders beyond that.

Right now I think the premiers will be one of Geelong, Sydney, Melbourne, GWS, Melbourne and Collingwood.

Though saying that picking 6 teams that could win the flag is not really a brave pick on my part, but I am struggling to separate them.

If I had to have a tier list I would go with

Tier 1
Geelong
Sydney
GWS

Tier 2
Melbourne
Carlton

Tier 3
Collingwood

but I am not sure if I am overrating the Swans there due to hope on my part.

We saw what happened to GWS last season. The season looks relatively straight forward for the 8 likely teams to make the 8 so therefore it's going to come down to who's prepared when it counts. I'm not confident on any team.

Neither am I. One or two injuries could knock down any team on the list. I think Geelong are the most susceptible to this given how many of their stars are on the older side.

Had Dangerfield played today Geelong may have won, but due to being older, the sort of injury he got last week is not unexpected.

You just posted the numbers. Carlton were outstanding.

Geelong were pretty average, we got smashed around the ball, Hawk kicked none and our best player didn’t play. We’ll take the 4 points though.

Clearly Carlton will need to play it's best game of the year next time it plays Geelong if it expects to pull off another dominant three goal loss. Otherwise, as we all obviously agree, a 100+ point flogging is all but guaranteed.
