I think the Roos will be back bigger and better than ever in 2002.

I can see a '91 Hawk like premiership. Winning one last flag with the older blokes.

They will have a great blend of speed and hardness, youth and experience.

Only Essendon to worry about for the Roos.

Of course this assumes they can get a good year out of Duck, Stevo and mighty Mick.

Any thoughts? Am I dreaming or realistic?

Cheers

Dreaming !

Rocca has less support in the forward line, Carey will continue to get injuries. Strengthened in the ruck with the addition of Porter, but now they have to hide Spider Burton. Mick Martyn will be serviceable, but not as effective as the premiership years.

Not a bad midfield ( Ports, Grant, Stevens ) but might struggle against better midfields as the year goes on.

Predicted finish between 6th-12th.

Good prediction! :) I wouldve had the same one myself.
To narrow it down I will say between 6th-10th. :D

2001 was the first season Pagan has missed finals football since he took up coaching u19's.

A killer draw, crippling injuries and too many inexperienced faces were all big reasons for Pagans Hero's failing in 2001.

Pagan won't let them fail again!

In the middle of the season the Roos streched both grandfinalists without a fit Anthony Stevens, Wayne Carey, Mick Martyn and Leigh Colbert. There is no doubt this team can still mix it with the big boys.

With the no.1 ruck duo in the AFL(Porter/Burtan), the likes of Harvey, Stevens, Grant, King and Co. will dominate the square and overwhelm any midfield combatant.

A 100+ combined goal total from a lean and fit tandom of Carey and Rocca will secure the Roos a top 4 finish.

*cough cough*

Primus/Lade

Well- I think they'll make the 8- coming in at about 6th- a top 4 finish would be wonderful. I think with the first couple of rounds we have We will have a place in the top 8- hopefully some momentum will come off that. The only sides we will have trouble against from the teams we have to play twice are Hawks,Carlton and Sydney. The hardest of them will be the hawks.

A good year with injuries and I htink a top 4 finish- otherwise we will be back in the 8. Not sure how long we will last in the finals if we have a bad run with injuries.

Pagan will make the guys work extra hard considering 2001. The guys should be fit and ready to fire.

Go Roos

I hope Mick can have a good last year and Stevo and Carey will hopefully be there to make it better!

Ok Port supporters lets change that "Porter/Burton best ruck duo in the AFL" to "Porter/Burton 2nd best ruck duo in the AFL"

Happy? Hehe!

Go Roos!

i think the roos should go allright this year... I would predict a finish between 5 and 11. I reckon it all depends if Carey's over his injuries or not. If he is, there's no doubt they are a definite finals contender. Porter is a great addition.

I think the Roos will scrape into the top 8, but I really think they aren't in the same class as Port or the Lions, who are a class above everyone else. Even Essendon are slightly lower. :D

We might not be in the same "class" as Port- but we can sure beat them;) Thats why I am looking forward to 02 so much- we play them twice- one of those games is in the first round:) So thats 2 wins that are 85-90% certain

Go Roos

When was the last time North beat either of these two sides ?

Well, Port haven't beaten North at all yet.

I dont know when we last beat Brisbane-

It was during the 2000 season when we played them at Colonial. We had a 40 point lead going into half time, and even at the 10 minute mark of the final quarter, we still held a 30 point lead. Then the Lions started to get a few goals and got a run on. They got within a goal until Harvey snuck away to get the margin back to about 9 points. The Lions snuck one back, and they were going forward when the siren went (if I remember correctly, there was a 50/50 decision on a tackle that went the Roos way in the last minute). The Roos won by a couple of points.

Port were the one and only top 8 side Roos beat last year.

One win in 13 tries against top 8 sides in 2001.

This tends to hint very very strongly that Ros are nowhere near the class of the top 8 sides form 2001.

The only way I can see the following predcition "A good year with injuries and I htink a top 4 finish- otherwise we will be back in the 8." coming true is if we are talking about the lower half of the ladder when "the 8" is mentioned here.

If Roos actually do make the upper half of the ladder, that is the top 8 (not just the 8), then it will have been a very good effort indeed.

Fair point. BUT, look at the Lions, we always choked against Essendon, for quite a few years. And this year we beat them in the H&A season, and didn't look back. And then the tough one, beating them in a Grand Final. And we all know what happened that day. :D :D :D Ahhhhhhhh. *snaps back to reality*

Anyways.........Port are an excellent side. I certainly wouldn't underestimate them because you just never know. ;)

I'm not confident about North making the top 4, because there are too many 'ifs', but I reckon we can at least make the top 8, probably 5 or 6 and get the home final in the first week.

BUT, 'IF' Carey and Stevens can stay fit and healthy, 'IF' Martyn can recapture some past form and stay fit and healthy, 'IF' the young players can step up and 'IF' our Midfield can show improvement, then we have as good a chance as anyone of making it to the Prelims at least.

The Kangaroos certainly have a chance of making the 8 this year, but I'd say there are about nine other teams with a better chance at this stage:

Brisbane
Essendon
Hawthorn
Richmond
Port Adelaide
Sydney
Adelaide
Carlton
Collingwood

Having said that, a few injuries to key players in the above group - Ratten, Buckley, McLeod, Clinton King :D, Primus - and a good (extremely lucky) injury run for the Kangaroos, would quickly change the equation.

The reality though is that Carey, Martin, Archer and co aren't the players they once were, and are unlikely to be injury free for enough of the season.
