Somebody's got to do it.

Why not Buckley? High profile bloke.

As stated earlier, Ayres would be a perfect fit for this young list at Collingwood. A man of high integrity who is 100% authentic. Do not underestimate what he has achieved with a non-aligned AFL club, being Port Melbourne, with a TPP of $500,000. Premiers in 2011 and GF in 2017. Extraordinary effort. Puts our senior coach to shame.

Alas he will never get the gig - not high profile enough and not Nathan Buckley.

The Collingwood players love Bucks. We miss finals for a 4th consecutive season.

The St Kilda players loved Ross. They played consecutive grand finals.

Interesting.

Look, at the end of the day, your Pendleburys, Sidebottoms, Treloars, Adamsssssss, Moores, Daicossss, Browns, will be the main players at the end of the day. So at the end of the day, we need more than one of each to be successful at the end of the day.
On a serious note.
Comparing VFL achievement to AFL achievement? Are you suggesting that the competitions are on par?

Maybe they ought to start hating him then

Don't think the poster is comparing AFL to VFL, but the achievements of Ayres at an underesourced club, no matter the competition, is testament to his coaching ability.
Meanwhile, at the self proclaimed best resourced club in the land..............

Can't compare the two without examining the competition and what they're up against in the opposite coaches box.
As soon as you say it puts Buckley to shame, you're comparing them on a number of levels that you can't compare them on.

Naturally, I am not suggesting the competitions are on par. The AFL is far more elite. But that is not the issue here as identified by Black-White above.

Ayres has/is coaching a bunch of VFL footballers who collectively earn $500,000 pa. The extraordinary achievement here is that this group of players are competing against many AFL standard players who represent far better resourced AFL affiliated VFL clubs, and are/have beaten them. And now they are playing off in a Grand Final. And I can guarantee you that these non AFL affiliated clubs like Port are no where near as well resourced nor financial.

So I take it back. This is not an extraordinary achievement by Ayres, this is downright outrageous and is absolute testament to his coaching/man management ability. This simply should not happen.

Absolutely, there is daylight between Ayres' achievements at Port and Buckley's at Collingwood.

Watching the Crows rip the Cats a new one but will reply in short by referring to one variable. Perhaps more later.
I've been involved at VFL level and also had what I saw backed up by a VFL player on SEN.
The AFL listed players can often become self centred when playing in the VFL. In order to stand out, they have to get the pill rather than adhere to, **** I hate this word, structures. Let's not forget that the performance of the 'reserves' as a team can become secondary because the senior coaching staff filter down senior requirements that don't always suit the team. Ayres does not have these issues.
Nevertheless, I agree it's a great achievement but you cant compare the two unless you compare the competitions.

Fully concur with your comments regarding the filtering down process.

I've seen Ayres in action with his players. He is the genuine article and the players go to war for him. Can't say I've seen that same unbridled passion, on a consistent basis, between players and coach when it comes to Buckley.

I believe Ayres could comfortably adjust to the higher AFL standard because there is one consistent that stays true - authentic man management/player relationships. I believe Ayres has this is spades and I firmly believe this is not a natural strength of Buckley but rather is manufactured (and that is not a criticism rather an observation).

The salary cap is the same for all the VFL teams

Who was the clown that suggested we could do worse than appoint Ayres as senior coach?

Great win by the Borough - a non AFL affiliated VFL club. A win for the good guys. As stated earlier, Ayres truly is an authentic man manager.

Just of note - the Port players were not paid in Round 1 as Port were in dire straights financially. I reckon a lot of well paid overrated non performing egotistical AFL players should take a good hard look.
