i just saw the footage of Rough speaking after the loss to Gold Coast. I don't think he looks comfortable at all. I wonder if he's going to struggle in the spotlight ? God bless him, he's has his battles. I hope he's ready for captaincy and all it entails.
Go Rough !!

I dont care how he sounds in the media. I care what the players think of him.

Go Rough !!

He was the poor bastard who had to go put a positive spin on a shocking loss. He sounded like any 3-game old captain under that kind of cloud to me.

Yeah it's a tough one to judge. Watching the interview, I thought to myself "Rough, our club has just had our biggest loss in donkey's years, at the hands of a club who were coming off a 100 point smashing. I want you to look a little concerned". In reality, there must be a lot of internal pressure which players and coaches are trying to quell. Talking about that pressure and expressing disappointment publicly doesn't help anybody.

In my opinion, we are lacking leadership. Hodge was fantastic against GC, and Roughy still needs to put himself in the action a little more - but he's also on the comeback trail, this might take time. The players I'm looking to are Shiels and Smith, who have put themselves forward as the next generation of leaders. They may be directing teammates on the field, but they are not leading by example when it comes to winning the ball, using the ball, tackling, shepherding, bringing others into the game.

Meh, I was not totally thrilled with Rough's ascendancy to Captain.
Love his personal story, he's been great for the club, but sometimes reminds me of Paul Dear in that his physical tools don't always translate into consistent reliable performer.
When he's great, he's super and you think he's superhero like.
When missing you wonder WTF is going on.
Jarryd's missed mark in the goal square when it was popped up perfectly over the defenders head was costly for me as I watched it live, killed whatever get back into the contest momentum we were building. He's not a great mark in general.

Ah well, Gunners for mine would have been the better call and we should be seeing him leading from the goal square like Dunny did.

He's been captain for three whole games now, so naturally its high time we pronounced judgement on his captaincy! :drunk:

3 games is the standard timing for review, yeah?

Only if all were losses and the last was a flogging, otherwise it's around 5.
And if Hawthorn were to win the first 5 games then it's probably about Round 15 before we know if they are the real deal or not.

Technically..Apart from a Stewart goal after the siren in Tassie (JLT1) his win/loss as captain is 1/5... I know it's only JLT but a win is a win.

Obviously these results have nothing to do with Rough's captaincy but i'm sure it wouldn't sit well with him.

Kind of like being promoted as a Store Manager that has been smashing it's sales targets and all of a sudden customers aren't walking through the door.

I have no doubt that Roughie is a good leader and will be a good captain.

However, if Hodgey had gone another year, it may have eased Roughie into the job. Hodgey's the best captain I've ever seen, and with Roughie coming back after a year of health issues, it may have been better for him to wait.

Also, with the personnel changes in the team, a bit of continuity from Hodge would have been good.

I didn't like him being appointed captain. Only because you want a player who lifts the team with his actions. Rough has never been that played, he's been the one who does the team thing at the expense of his own game.
It's great as we are rebuilding, it teaches younger players what is expected, but from a fans perspective, there's a perception he lacks effort

I agree with Mitchell Madness, he should have been given at least a year to find his feet again. But what other option did we have??

Shiels or Burgoyne. But again, that's if you want the team to lift. Roughy is a transitional captain. There to show the next generation what is required off field to be at the club, similar to how vandenberg was captain from 2005-2007.

We are a bigger rabble on here than our club at the moment.
Are some here blaming Rough for our 0-3 situation. It certainly seems that way.

My thoughts are that he hasn't had the perfect introduction to take on the captaincy., as he missed a whole year, but to throw him to the wolves, as some here appear to be doing is downright ludicrous. Are we all Hawks here? Then, lets give the man a fair go before before we pass judgement.
