If Vlad isn't bluffing and Etihad hosts the round 1 matches in Melbourne, I'd rather see us play the tankers in round 2 at the 'G and interstate in round 1. That way the anticipation (and therefore the crowd) is practically the same as it's our first game in Melbourne for the season.

and if both clubs win in round 1, the crowd will be 80k+

Let's have some perspective. ANZAC Day draws well because it's an event, and the MCC and AFL members come out to play. We don't have the same event status for the round 1 game, and we don't have the same membership in the MCC and afl as he dons and pies. This means even though we my sell out general admin, we cannot pass ANZAC Day

There was 86k this year for anzac day.

There were 85k tickets sold for Dreamtime.. We could have outdrawn Anzac day this year.

We will do it in the future.

One day in the near future when we are top 4 or there abouts we will outdraw Anzac day playing one of either Essendon or Collingwood.

Carlton fans just don't rock up.

How can we outdraw if Carlton fans don't rock up? You contradict yourself here

I'm saying we will outdraw the anzac day crowd by playing one of Collingwood or Essendon.

Not talking about us vs Carlton as their supporters for some reason don't attend in huge numbers VS us.

We won't be playing Essendon or pies round 1, so how is this relevant?

Also the dreamtime game pulls well, but it doesn't get the theatre goers in the MCC and AFL that ANZAC Day does. Without these guys, we will never out pull Anzac day outside the odd fluke year

I'm not talking about Round 1 I just mean in general..

We will have a crowd figure that outdraws Anzac day if we are doing well and it could happen more than once..

Anzac day this year had shocking weather which affected the crowd... Had the dreamtime game benefited from a Sunny day I reckon we could have passed 86k.

I agree that Anzac day is massive and hard to outdraw but we will do it in the future when the Anzac day crowd figure suffers from bad weather and we get an Essendon or Collingwood on a nice day/night with both teams high up the ladder.

We will never outdraw an Anzac day that has benefited from a non wet day though.

So if we are playing well, if the weather on our day is good, and if the weather on their day is bad, it could happen more than once?

That's a lot of ifs to back up a statement that we can outdraw all games bar the grand final

Start it 1 week earlier with GWS vs Sydney again. Then the 1st week the 'G is available, Richmond and Carlton can get the season started. Just 1 week earlier than like it was this season.

That doesn't solve the problem.

The entire round 1 has to be brought forward a week, to accommodate for 24 rounds, because players are requesting 2 byes a year (so 22 games + 2 byes = 24 rounds). Just playing GWS/Sydney a week earlier means the season will go further into October, which the AFL can't do due to cricket, but they can bring the season forward a week, with the MCG/Gabba/SCG/Hobart all possibly unavailable. So the most likely scenario is that 2013 round 1 will have 9 games all in the one week. MCG may be available but won't be scheduled for use until round 2.
