The club seems to have lifted it's game a fair bit in terms of VFL content/coverage this year, and that's great to see. I'd like to see them add an injury list/update. I don't see why we couldn't have one, and since (I'm almost certain) SANFL and WAFL clubs would, it's something that really should be made available by a club at this level. It wouldn't need to be anything fancy, like a video report, just a simple list, updated weekly!
ohhhh....my bad, apologies. My surprise isn't about him being referred to as a star. I'm surprised by the size reference - he's a beast.

First, he's not exactly a Sean Darcy/Kieran Briggs style bruiser.
Second, he's 4 years older than Steene. He was absolutely still skinny 4 years ago. Look at him here:
Steene will be a similar size if he sticks around. This is exactly the age that tall kids tend to fill out.
I don't agree, and I think you're massively overestimating your ability to judge a person's hip width from a distance.
I think he's a Briggs style bruiser.
It's the width through the hips. Steene just won't end up with that core size and strength. It's like expecting Ed Allan to end up built like Jordy - it's not going to happen.
I guess that’s the issue. He’s in year 3 now and still hasn’t improved on his form from year 1.I thought Ryan looked to be getting back to his first year form. Did some nice things. Strong overhead. Minus some shaky moments, uses the ball well. Hopefully he can keep building.
Probably. I've also convinced myself that West will become a monster and Cochrane won't and that he will have to rely on different physical attributes than strength. To me there's usually a pretty easy to see natural body shape - you can bulk up to be bigger, but some just have a genetic advantage in terms of their core size, just as others have different genetic advantages.I don't agree, and I think you're massively overestimating your ability to judge a person's hip width from a distance.
that just seems weird to me, and seems the wrong way round. They see Steene as the first ruck, with smit the forward/ruck.
Steene just has to keep adding on more size, and he's done a little of that this off season. But his tap work especially at stoppage last weekend, which was similar to some of his games at SANFL level, is all class. He's definitely the better mark of the two of them though. Smit obviously is more aggressive and has a bigger build, But its a partnership which they'll work together. So hopefully both can stay on the park this year and we see their development.that just seems weird to me, and seems the wrong way round.
Steene's no 1 weapon is that he is capable of a ripper contested mark, that makes him more of a natural forward than Smit He needs to do it more consistently but has taken some absolute beauties. His ruckwork in year 1 wasn't all that impressive, nice enough leap, but not great at the body work, but gee his tap from a throw in to set up Ed Allan was a beauty, so maybe that is developing?
Smit's no 1 weapon year 1 was his tap work and the aggression he showed in the ruck contest. A decade of watching Josh Fraser and then Darren Jolly taught me that a ruckman absolutely has to relish the physical contest. OTOH I havent seen much in terms of marking ability from him. Takes the occasional mark but really needs to develop that part of his game.

Ryan has endurance, pace, intercepting ability, and dual sided, that's a great foundation on which to build to his development around. Not Vanilla at all compared to say DeMattia who lacks some of these foundations eg woefully one sided.
Ryan at around 190 he is also a good size
Sorry for the intrusion, how is Harry Demattia going? Had a bit to do with back in his junior days. Always thought he was a better cricketer than a footballer.
He's not a natural, but they might give him a while if his work ethic and professionalism is up to the hype.Sorry for the intrusion, how is Harry Demattia going? Had a bit to do with back in his junior days. Always thought he was a better cricketer than a footballer.
Thanks for the update. I think Collingwood signed him up for a couple of more yearsHe's not a natural, but they might give him a while if his work ethic and professionalism is up to the hype.
Yeah, he's signed until the end of 2027, so they're obviously pretty confident that once he gets some continuity in his game that he'll come good. He likely won't have shown much by the end of this year, but they obviously believe he'll get the best out of himself given enough time. Thanks for the update.
