Review Round 1 loss to North

By and large I thought the selections were okay, but picking lord and Esava after no pre season games in the A team went about as good as we could expect.

Very odd we played Ramm in the a team all pre season and then gave him the arse.

Lord is rubbish.

Dont know why Kane Farrell has decided to change his mindset to worm burn every single kick he gets. The most overated kick ive ever seen. Bailey Dale is by far the elite standard in half back kicking. Kane just either kicks far or tries to peg it at 80kmh and misses targets.

Would have value at the end of the year Happily trade for a second rounder to contribute to the rebuild

My only positives were that Marshall, Whitlock and Jones had moments. Also this North side is better than recent years. They'll be competitive this year.

Unfortunately Visentini was utter piss and out midfield looked like traffic cones for almost the whole game. No one could stick a tackle, we got worse as the game wore on and it was hard to figure out how we were trying to play.
Yeah I couldn’t fathom what the game plan was either.
All over the shop.

We’ve played worse against them under Hinkley when they were coached by Rhyce Shaw lol
It is never hard to dig up an absolutely catastrophic hinkley defeat with a best 22 far better than what we have now.

I don't want to see Aliir and Esava in the same side ever again. They jump at the same balls, spoil each other and find new ways to brain fade. Also Watkins is probably one of the worst players we have ever given a AFL game to.

A few positives were:

Georgiades: Continued solid form from last year

Burgoyne: I think he will have a career best season, I don't remember him making any mistakes today, looked fit and confident

Whitlock: looks dangerous whenever the ball goes near him

Marshall: I thought he was one of our best and looked to be in form.

McKinlay: I think he has something and will improve if he gets a few games.

Durdin: I thought he was fantastic and found space and finished

Evans: Back to his 2024 form

My 3 most disappointing players were:

Rozee - He was literally embarrassed by the North players and made to look like a state league player

Bergman: He looks to have lost his class, his game was extremely disappointing

Berry - what the hell was that! He plays so well in the internals and then spuds it up against real opposition. While I do think he will get better, I can see him being a player that let's you down in finals.

Changes next week

Out:
Marshall
Aliir
Watkins
Berry
Lord

In:
Lukosius
Ramm
Zerk-Thatcher
Brodie
Zadow/Moraes

Playing West Coast last week hid our problems, they are worse. Crows dismantled us in the trial without much effort which was probably a truer reflection of where we are. Ruck with new rule is killing us, may be better of, playing both Vis and Sweet, dropping Lord and resting Vis forward.

I dont think there will be wholesale changes like being suggested here. Marshall likely a forced change. From there, who knows. Thought Lai was the only one who really put his hand up but he isnt in a spot I see space in. Zadow maybe but they might back Berry again.

As bad & uninspiring as that performance was, I’l reluctantly give them a mulligan card given it’s the 1st round of the season.

Full credit to the Roos, who appeared far hungrier, cleaner & stronger throughout the entire contest, while we looked slow, reactive, & disinterested for large portions of the game.

It’s easy to fall into the trap in lambasting players like Watkins, & Mackinlay, but I’m having none of that. If you want to find a scapegoat for such a lacklustre display, you need to call out the real culprits.

JHF: North supporters labelled him a mummy’s boy, & after that insipid showing it’s hard not to find a meaningful counter argument. For someone as immensely talented as Horny is, he let himself down badly today. Body language was extremely poor, stunk of entitlement & barely gave a yelp…utterly disgraceful performance.

Bergman: apart from one 60 metre roost, was invisible & had no impact on the game whatsoever.

Farrell: when he’s on song he’s irresistible and gives us so much drive of HB, but it just doesn’t happen often enough. Another experienced player who seems more than content in going through the motions while collecting a generous pay check in the process.

Allir: well beaten, played with no urgency, must do better.

Butters: certainly not our worse, but if your manager is supposedly putting feelers out for contracts upwards of two million dollars per season, surely you would want a better return.

As for Lord, the effort is there, but he’s simply not good enough at AFL level. I’d be surprised if we see him in a Power jumper again.

Indeed.

You’d think he was good for 15+ wins every single year, made a few Grand Finals, won two, and relentlessly belted the Crows for the existential dogsh¡t they were for a decade the way the “gaw gee, I hope the Hinkley Haters are happy!” types are already mashing that button.

Can anyone name a more useless player than Ollie Lord? Hes 24 and probably around 100kg by now, yet 0 contested marks, 0 percenters for a 197cm rotating ruck forward just says it all.

For all the shit butcher copped around the league for his set shot kicking, he looks like prime Buddy compared to Lord. Hell id even take a SANFL milk tank Mitch Harvey at full forward over lord or even Sam Gray - at least he could out body opponents 30cm taller than him and be a threat at goal.

People need to get over that “oh but he kicked 4 against brissy in a final” FMD that was 4 seasons ago.

Hes a spud, absolute potato, list clogger and passenger; gets out bodied by anyone, cant kick straight or at all, provides no prescience or aerial threat, doesnt get back and or provide an outlet for a big man. Absolutely cant tell me otherwise

I also loved Lai's game in the SANFL

I really don't think today was a list issue. Certainly our list could be better, but the 21st, 22nd and 23rd best players we rolled out today weren't the reason we couldn't tackle or get our hands on the footy.

Our midfield got absolutely spanked. We put together plenty of centre square groups that have a heap of proven talent and ability at AFL level, including All Australians and a soon to be $2mil p/a player.

They just didn't show up.

The strategy seemed all wrong with nobody on the defensive side allowing North to waltz it out. We didn't seem physically or mentally prepared for the game. Very underwhelming start for Carr and Dew, you'd hope they have some sort of plan to be better than this.
Pretty much this. Watkins, Lord, Berry, Viz were very poor could have been carried along by a better core.

Drew is absolute pus. Has been for a few years now. 21 CBAs for one centre clearance, clearances total. Doesn’t rack up the ball, doesn’t use it well, isn’t a line breaker, isn’t great contested, not good overhead, not a scoreboard threat. Genuinely why the flop is he in the team anymore.

Special mentions to captain fairy without a single contested touch in qtrs 1 and 4, and $2 million dollar man for a single touch in q3.

McKinley was one of the few who applied pressure today. He has excellent closing speed, strong over the ball and doesn’t shirk a contest, plenty to work with.
He also kicks a football like it's the first time he's ever seen one before.

Tried hard and the cupboard is pretty bare so there's not much point dropping him (he was less shit than the much older and more experienced Wehr today, for one), but he's not exactly screaming future premiership player.
