I also feel that we're not as reliant on Pearce's leadership in the backline compared to two years ago. Clark, Chapman and Cox are all very vocal.
Chapman is looking terrific. He seems much more aware of what weapons he has and wants to pull the trigger.

Bring in this guy for Pearce. Deserves to be out there going by marks and stats as a key defender. Done the job once given a shot too

Maybe the question should be, do we have a back man that has the smarts to combat Gunstons smarts.
Pace may be a factor, but you have to be able to read the play as well as he does.
The supply he got early ... Nobody can stop that.
Even if you're quicker and read the play well enough to take out the obvious option, they had enough time and space as kickers to go to the less obvious option.

We were being best out the back, as well as on the lead up. Really had to gamble, and take away the easiest option, force the kicker to make the play ... But that doesn't work at the level unless there's pressure up the ground.

Only way to stop him early would've been to hold another player back, sitting in front of Gunston. Likely means someone else gets off the chain, and almost definately means we struggle going forward more.

Surprising that Chappie wasn’t considered for Gunston. Gunston plays as a lead up forward where height is not the critical factor but pace and agility is.
This is why Sam Mitchell was licking his lips with the Ryan and B Cox match ups, he pushed Gunston back deep and left it 1v1 to great effect.
Longmuir clearly didn’t want to lose Chappies rebound up the ground. My TV at home heard very clearly what I thought of our defensive choices on Gunston. We were outcoached by 6 goals there.

I think that's too simplistic, Mitchell often plays Gunston out of the F50 and isolates him.
If we'd gone more defensively we may have reduced that goal count against, and also highly likely reduced our goals scored.
On the flipside we may have ended up trapped in our D50 more and just copped more goals from Watson and their other small forwards.

We ended the first quarter ahead, then we couldn't contain their transition in that second quarter.
We made some adjustments but predominantly stuck to the structure, and asides from the early part of the third quarter we controlled the game from there, just couldn't execute, making poor mistakes and missing goals we'd usually kick.

Didn’t Chappy have Ginnivan on a leash a lot?

I’ve been banging the drum for Davies since his draft year now, absolutely deserves his chance. But the fact we’ve named McDonald as the emergency recently is probably telling.
Really hope they turn to Davies. You are right OMac emergency for the last two rounds (8/9), whereas Davies emergency for rounds 1 and 3. I do wonder if OMac was on standby as key forward with Voss returning from illness. OMac has been playing purely forward line for the last 2-3 weeks at Peel with Davies and Draper key defenders. Named again in the forward line for today.
