McVeigh's role when Shaw returns will be interesting to see. He's dominant off HB right now and despite him being hat way in the midfield at the start of the year too, having him at HB means we have him and Malceski to set up play. Which team could tag both of our rebounders out of the game? I'd keep McVeigh down back (with Mitchell and Parker now in the midfield, we can cover him) and deploy Shaw as a pure defender/tagger once more, a role he has done very well over the last three years when needed (think Stephen Hill and Cyril Rioli jobs he has done).
I'm not sure Mattner definitely makes it back in the side. Shaw does but Mattner has a lot of competition with both younger players essentially playing an even more versatile role than Mattner does in terms of who they can play on. What he has in his favour are runs on the board and his tried and true role of being the loose man which he has done expertly over time.
Great post and I agree with the part in bold. McVeigh is absolutely killing it off HB and I think moving him from there when Shaw comes back wouldn't be a great idea. Shaw has been on of the best in the business at those shut down roles in the past and I think he really rises to those challenges.
Just on the Crows - that Kangas win was fool's gold and they should have lost that game by 40 or more; their defensive pressure was absolutely non-existent for 3 quarters. They are playing ordinary footy and we should really win this comfortably. I know nothing's easy (unless you're playing the Dees) and you can't pencil in wins, but this would be a very bad loss if we dropped it. They are nowhere near where they were last year for whatever reason.
