McVeigh's role when Shaw returns will be interesting to see. He's dominant off HB right now and despite him being hat way in the midfield at the start of the year too, having him at HB means we have him and Malceski to set up play. Which team could tag both of our rebounders out of the game? I'd keep McVeigh down back (with Mitchell and Parker now in the midfield, we can cover him) and deploy Shaw as a pure defender/tagger once more, a role he has done very well over the last three years when needed (think Stephen Hill and Cyril Rioli jobs he has done).

I'm not sure Mattner definitely makes it back in the side. Shaw does but Mattner has a lot of competition with both younger players essentially playing an even more versatile role than Mattner does in terms of who they can play on. What he has in his favour are runs on the board and his tried and true role of being the loose man which he has done expertly over time.

Great post and I agree with the part in bold. McVeigh is absolutely killing it off HB and I think moving him from there when Shaw comes back wouldn't be a great idea. Shaw has been on of the best in the business at those shut down roles in the past and I think he really rises to those challenges.

Just on the Crows - that Kangas win was fool's gold and they should have lost that game by 40 or more; their defensive pressure was absolutely non-existent for 3 quarters. They are playing ordinary footy and we should really win this comfortably. I know nothing's easy (unless you're playing the Dees) and you can't pencil in wins, but this would be a very bad loss if we dropped it. They are nowhere near where they were last year for whatever reason.

One reason will be about in our port game

Hope we're greeted by a choir at the airport again!

Every year Bolton and Mattner are written off. Every year they produce when it matters.

Yeah, I still think Mattner comes in at the expense of Rampe.
Agree. Rampe is good but he's not Marty. No-one else has that insane closing speed. As a loose man he makes it to a lot of contests and he's completely fearless.

White for Walsh is all I'd say.

Let's get some games into Everitt and Rampe, who are both travelling well. Not the round, playing away, to risk Shaw or Mattner. I'm not afraid of the Crows attack without Tippett.

Danger game for us at AAMI, the Crows are a bogey side, and they'll be playing angry after losing to the Dockers.

So adelaide have some stupid fans which we learnt over summer, they dont seem to be here as often these days, we all missed that kurt thread especially bedford.

They have been a bogey side for us, though we have won 2 of the last 5 including the finals win. I watch them quite a bit, they are a good side, but that forward line is wonky with lynch and jenkins, they are hit and miss with their inexperience.

Dangerfield and sloane are guns though and a massive threat. I would expect the pyke mumford duo to dominate the ruck against jacobs and no one if mckernan is still injured. Dangerfeld had the second most hit outs for them on the weekend and jacobs form has been up and done, was subbed v north.

I think dangerfield has struggled with a tag but interesting he pushed forward on crowley and snagged a few.

Rutten has no obvious match up against us and while still good is slow, we can try to exploit him
Mckernan isn't injured.

I'm tipping you haven't seen us play much over the last 5 weeks? Yes you guys will probably be favourites but its far from an easy win.

In: White
Out: Walsh

Bolton as sub.

Oh the sweet irony re: Tippettgate. :D

I pretty muh agree that White coming in holds true to the basic structure Longmire is trying to sustain this year. Did he do enough in the reserves to warrant a call up?

I've been so impressed with Rampe this year - he's basically now a lock. I'd like to see him play out the year from here. :thumbsu:

Shaw and Mattner look to be fighting over the one spot in the backline now. But neither can do that swing role that Everitt gives us. So with LRT out I'd almost say they only come straight in if we have an injury or rested player (Bird?, Bolton?).

Ultimately, it might be Tom Mitchell to leave for Shaw? But I'd say the kid should get a run of two or three more games - at least as the sub.

Mattner, Shaw, Tippett, LRT, Reid...what a talented group waiting in the wings we have these days.
