What a terrible performance, should've lost plain and simple. 9 behinds in the last quarter to the roos. Let me just say this for all those praising armfield, sure he does some nice things, goes hard, runs hard etc, but the bloke cant kick (the most bbasic requirement in football!) and he costs us more than he gives us, blind freddy can see that. Dont know what Ratten sees, but then again the bloke is actually half blind so you cant blame him..

Out of jail simple as that, Geelong will pull our pants down next week.!

a win is a win...but ****.

Had Nth kicked straight we would have lost.
The effort by some is just not up to scratch.

I would love a game with no fev, just to have the players open their eyes to other options. Look for an un-even matchup, or look for a guy who is running hot.....no. its kick it to Fev at all costs.

This over possessing, going wide, backwards and eventually turning it over is giving me the absolute shits. We look so bloody good & dangerous when we move the ball fast.

Anyway positives....

T-Bird 2 goals when pushed forward :thumbsu:
Murph steppd up when Judd was well held...4 goals too:thumbsu:
Gibbs really set us up in the 3rd.
Stevo's return was good....now maintain it son :thumbsu:
Armfield's one on one duels were good watching..kicking needs work.
Irish,Hadley,Walker etc will be better for the run
Seeing Bomber Riley giving the mids a spray....it worked:thumbsu:

This was an absolutely outstanding effort, because we fought out a tough win despite being hopelessly out of form. Well done Blues. Oh, and ignore the footy media junk journo's pointless anti-Carlton opinions. This team has serious talent, and we only need to regain form for the finals series, and then we can start inflicting some pain. :)

Love you optimism, wish i could be the same...

An anus....wow. I have my favorites I guess, but I tend not to overate players like everyone else does. I don't think Army will make it...

I didn't understand censorship back then :o I still plead extenuating circumstances in that it was directed at an opposition troll

We can find out without too much pain by playing him CHF/wing one week

Very disappointing by Carlton, same old story for us. We struggled again, no intensity, we didn't come to play again. Yes we got the four points, but lets not fool ourselves, we have a long way to go to be a finals team. Questions need to be asked, it's the MC's job to lift the team, to teach them the basic skills. We got the four points, but if North were a better team our season would be over now. We have so many things we need to improve, we should never let teams like North, Richmond etc get so close to us. North had more tackles and destroyed us around the ground, a lot of people will say four points is four points, but Carlton as a team really need to look at themselves. I keep saying this but we Carlton will not get anywhere when are skills are still so shocking, I wonder what are coaches are doing about this?

Paul Bower- Showed a lot of guts, played injured and hope he is ok for next week.
Bret Thornton- Took a very heavy knock to the shoulders and hopefully will be ok, played a courageous game.
Nick Stevens- Good performance, kept us in the game, hope he continues his form now.
Ryan Houlihan- Got smashed in the backline, a passenger and I don't see him at Carlton.
Mitch Robinson- Had a pretty solid game, gave us some toughness around the ground.
Andrew Walker- Showed the dash that he is known for, and will be much better for the run, faded a bit.
Richard Hadley- I think we need someone like him in the side, did pretty well in the third quarter, lifted.
Eddie Betts- Another pretty soild game, is creative in the FP.
Bryce Gibbs- Nice game by Gibbs, kicked a very nice goal from the boundary to keep us in touch, kid is going to be a great.
Kade Simpson- A quite game again, plays one good game and 4 crap ones.
Aaron Joseph- Found the going tough on Brent Harvey, but the kid is allowed one or two off games.
Setanta O’hAilpin- Had a quite game, seems to have been shifted allover the ground.
Chris Judd- Very quite game, no doubt he was carrying the injury from last week, should have been rested.
Marc Murphy - A great game by smurf, lifted us considering Judd was down. Put his stamp on the game when we needed him.
Brendan Fevola- Good Fev and bad Fev again tonight, he is brilliant when he wants to be.
Jordan Russell- Had a quite games, did one or two nice things.
Heath Scotland- Another quite game by Scotland, we really need him to find form and give us that dash/creativity from HB.
Matthew Kreuzer- A solid game, I would say he won in the run and maybe around the ground.
Dennis Armfield- Has shocking disposal skills, we really need to work on our skills as a team.
Shaun Hampson- Very impressive game by Hammo, won most of the hitouts he went up for.

March Murphy BOG

Totally disagree with Eddie Betts, he was very quiet, I think he is very out of form at the moment.

Getting really sick and tired of people saying if north kick straight they would of won lets say they kick one of those goals , doesnt the whole dynamic of the game change. Ball goes to the centre, we are not kicking out. Whos to say we wouldnt clear the centre bounce kick a goal then go on to kick 4 or 5, stop living in hypothetical land and get with reality, we won, wasnt pretty but we won, is the past years we would of lost all those games in the last 5 weeks but we found a way to win. we have 4 weeks to get it right.

I was just glad to win a game that usually wouldn't have gone our way..... instead of losing a game that should have gone our way!

I reckon learning to grind out wins is a valuable skill for our team to gain, but take nothing away from the fact we need improvement in alot of key areas!
Well put!
I hope your'e right that by grinding out games we build some belief.
:thumbsu:

Well C_P if we are isolating last nights game, he was the one and only player who gave us run from the backline.
He also put plenty of pressure on all over the ground.

When other players were running back to man an opponent up the ground he and Robinson were the ones running head on changing the opposition players mind and rushing them.

You may not have cared to praise him but I'll bet that he was one of the first players Ratten gave a big "Thank You" to.

Yeah the same bloke that could have cost us the game in the final quarter with 3 or 4 turnovers to North Melbourne that resulted in goal scoring oppotunties (and anyone who thinks it was just only one bad kick is either lying or didn't have a good view/position of the game)

I had a very good look/position at where Armfield was kicking/turning the ball over, and it was deplorable.

Anyhow maybe i'm still just grumpy, I'm just trying the digest the news of Sir Bobby Robson's death, and I've always been a fairly negative/cynical person anyway.

But I'll tell you this, Armfield wouldn't come close to getting a game at the elite clubs in this comp, IE St.Kilda and Geelong,

CP, you're not cynical or negative about Carlos or Stevo, and you come up with some good insights on this board

So all you've got to do is view everything else in life in the same light that you view Carlos and Stevo.

Simple.

Point of order I'm a big rap for Joe Anderson, really think the kid should be in our best 22 (certainly is courageous and his kicking skills have improved a lot)

And I'm happy mostly with the development of most of your youngsters, Aussie has improved in leaps and bounds this season.

The beef I have with Armfield is this isn't the first game this year where his kicking and decision making had the potential to cost us badly ( the game against Freo at the Gold Coast is another example)

You guys may well be correct, he might have played a decent game overall, and I can forgive one or two clangers/turnovers, but not 3 or 4, especially when they resulted in North Melbourne getting cheap/easy goal scoring oppotunities ...

Same goes for the umps...WTF happened there tonight. Swear they wanted to kill us.

Have to agree here. I was at the game and some of those decisions were woeful and ruined a pretty sprited game, even though the skills were down. However all you can do is win so good luck to the Blues.

I agree with this, and I would say about 95% of Carlton fans would say the same. We were very lucky, if they had kicked straight they would have buried us in the last quarter. But the good thing was that we hung in there, I like what Murphy said at the end, he said we still have a lot of work to do and he sounded a bit flat. It's good to see that they aren't getting carried away with this win. But I am very worried about next week against the Cats, I shudder to think what the Cats are going to do to us if we play like that.

Yep we were very ordinary once again as North went into it with 21.5 men and then lost an accurate forward who was hurting us early while one of our injuries resulted in a backman going forward and kicking a couple.

Why can't people also look at Armies good kicks early on and appreciate that he is a work in progress and that his attributes of pace and courage cannot be taught while kicking can generally be improved. People like easy scapegoats around here - why aren't I seeing as many posts having a go at Fev for his deplorable early kicking (not that I really want that as I have had a big enough go at him)

I agree with you Five, Army is underrated some of the hard stuff, courageous stuff he does is awesome. I love the way he just takes the game on, I can forgive him some of the shanks and skill errors. We need tough nuts at Carlton like him, and to me it seems like he loves the club.

Carlton spoils farewell

The frantic Denis Armfield, behind the ball, gave a bit of that too last night in his busy way.

He shut down Matt Campbell and was crucial in driving the ball forward.

Armfield was involved in the critical piece of play in the second term that helped ratchet the Blues’ game up when they were sliding.

He spotted Stevens alone at centre half-forward and the midfielder converted.

Mr Emotional needs to calm down before he posts. :D

Now admittedly I can't often get to the games, so I can only see so much on TV, but still I thought Army and Hadley, despite some very bad kicks, more than made up for it with their other efforts.

Just watch Sir Richard's clearance and link up work in the 3rd quarter. Army's one on one work and run. I think his opponent thought he could out outmaneuver and outrun Army....boy was he wrong!
He did some nice-decent kicks, so his kicking has been improving, he just needs to get some consistency there.
Remember in the pre-season games we were saying how much his kicking had improved, he was even giving lace out passes to Fev ;)

I think he can get there.

Was on AW this morning. He was sensational last night. He actually loves the one on one stuff where some players feel the glare of the public eye on them as they are made to look idiots on the boundary line. This bloke corrals and tackles, not too many beat him one out. He's a Duracell Bunny with a mo and a mash hammer. :thumbsu:

Army is going to be one of those hard nut, back flankers in the mould of Hickey. :thumbsu:

Armfield's defending, body work and positioning in the one on one contests with Campbell was fantastic.

In that 3AW interview, Army said he needs to improve his smarts because he occasionally runs himself into tackles and makes simple errors.

Armfield is still skinny and raw after taking up AFL in year eleven.

Has a heap of upside.

Well said TG, like I have said before we need players like him. I admire him, he gives us dash, toughness at the contest. When Mitch gets some more pre seasons into him, we will have another tough nut. Can never have too many players who have guts and are willing to go in hard.

I subscribe to this theory - The only time I thought we were could've lost was when we were leading in that last quarter. Against Brisbane in RD2, I was worried about percentage, and not much else. It just seemed like it would be our night once the mids gained control after half time.
