Those he had him rightfully captain did not need to risk a loophole.

He's either your 'go to' guy (VC -earlier game) or your 'fallback' guy (C - late game) or 'Plain M1' if your early VC goes huge (ie Pendles - Rd 16),

It only works if:
1: Ablett has an early game
2: you have a non-playing emergency, and that means less cash cow profits
3: you have no injuries or withdrawals

On the weekend if you tried to VC Ablett and had Sam Mitchell in your team, you would have ended up with a donut.

When I have Ablett in my team, I'd rather not risk it.

It wont be fancy schmancy when Ablett pulls a hammy in Q1. By making him vice you aren't saying that he will get outscored, you are merely taking insurance out in case something happens to him.

But you are also using up your emergency. What if one of your other players is a late withdrawal such as Sam Mitchell last week? It's probably more likely to occur as we reach the end of the season and teams decide to rest players.

Besides, when was the last time Ablett got injured during a match? (touches wood)
He's only played less than 75% game time in a match 3 times in the last 9 years (r17 2006, r15 2008 and r16 2011)
