Opinion Round 23 Team 2017

Boring without having a game this week, isn't it?

In the meantime:
If everyone was fit and firing, which team would you like to see us field at years end?
A team that may largely be the platform to launch from next year, not taking into account what may be achieved through trade/FA/DFA/draft, periods.

Feel free to explain some of your choices, or just give us the 22 you'd like to see on the park come round 23.

Can we have the Round 22 thread please?

Round 23 should serve as a farewell game to White, Buckley, Boekhorst, Jones, Armfield, Jaksch, Kerridge, Lamb, Palmer, Sheehan, Gallucci, Glass-McCasker, Korcheck, Smedts, Thomas, Simpson.

Byrne........Weitering........ Simpson
Docherty...Marchbank...... Plowman
Williamson....Cripps.........Cuningham
Silvagni......Casbault.........Pickett
Curnow.......Mckay............SPS
Kruezer Murphy Gibbs

Macreadie, E Curnow, Fisher, Wright

  • Would like to see Byrne and Weitering in our backline come round 23. Weitering to rediscover his form a little bit in defence.
  • The backline oozes class.
  • The centre line has great potential heading into 2018 with Cuningham and Williamson showing line breaking skills and great disposal on goal and inside 50. Cuningham brings hardness which I love. Cripps is obviously is all class but we need speed around him to help going the other way.
  • Others have knocked both Cas and Silver but I'm loving both of them. As Carlton develop better inside 50s i can see Silver doing very well as he always offers a lead and gets a metre on his man. Cas required until Mckay and one other develops. Cas's game smarts and ground ball game are weak but still, he is required.
  • Hoping for Pickett and SPS to have runs on the ball and then play that small forward role tht holds the ball in our fwd 50. As they develop better tanks and body size, then more of a midfield role than a combo of mid/fwd.
  • Going Mackay on blind faith. C Curnow to keep on going development wise, not as footy smart as Silver but has a freakish leap. Not a player you want to have leg/knee injuries because a lot of his advantage is in his leap.
  • Kruezer, I fully hope we keep him. Above all his hard tackling and ground work is everything right now and something only a few other ruckman offer (mummy).
  • Murphy/Gibbs. I'm on my own here but I dont think either are winners in their class division. Yes, they do win midfield battles but over the home and away season I see them losing more than they win on average. If Cripps wasnt there, it would show up so much more. It's also the reason we set up quite often with a counter attacking strategy from half back with an extra man in defence.

  • Overall, i'm loving what SoS and BB are bringing to the club. I'm no longer desperate to steal a player from another club. WE are progressing well and just need to wait that 2/3 years with more draft quality. Personally, I don't see the loss of Murphy (can't tackle anymore - prolly due to injuries) and Gibbs over the next 2/3 seasons as alarming. Simpson (a player that deserves so much respect) can be covered as well with out young defensive players coming through.
  • Going into 2018, we lack one strong 'mature' key forward and one 1/2 more strong tackling / fast mature midfielders (assuming Gibbs exits). Happy to draft or trade for them.
  • Go blues!

Kerr? If and Polson were involved, along with LeBois, that would be something else........unprecedented...........like Clayton Oliver. :)

Easily. I'm calling it now ;)

Kerr has really impressed me and I reckon they will give him a go late in the year. LeBois is just a gun as is Polson

Buckley is my heart over head selection. He fills a role we need filled and I like the way he goes about it. Plus he's a son of a Carlton gun

Byrne Jones Plowman
Docherty Marchbank Pickett...............This could be a quick and impactful back-line, geared for the faster transition game.

Kreuzer Cripps Murphy
Cuningham Gibbs Williamson.............Speed and smarts on the wings

CCurnow Weitering SPS
LeBois McKay Silvagni......................Big if, but if LeBois was here, we'd have ourselves a genuine tricky goal-kicker.

Macreadie ECurnow Simpson Fisher......Backline and midfield coverage. Kreuzer though would carry a heavy ruck load.
Like to see all the players above except for LeBois and McKay (keep both for next year). In their place, I'd like to see two of Boekhorst, Sheehan and Jaksch (I still have a slither of hope that all three will play well enough at Northern to get a senior game or two by season's end).

MacReadie Weitering Plowman

Docherty Marchbank Byrne

Lock in this Back 6. It will be elite.
------------------------------------------------------
Kruezer Gibbs Sammo

Williamson Cripps Simpson

They pick themselves.
-------------------------------------------------------
Murphy C.Curnow Wright

McKay Silvagni Polson

Young....and hopeful. We need to mix it up and experiment thru the back half of the year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E.Curnow Cuningham Fisher Pickett

Ed to do the job given to him and keep providing leadership. 3 young hopeful tyro's.

Surprised A.Silvagni is not being selected

Docherty A.Silvagni Plowman
Weitering Marchbank Williamson

Simpson Gibbs E.Curnow
Kreuzer Cripps Murphy

SPS Casboult C.Curnow
Cunningham H.McKay Wright

Foll: Kreuzer Gibbs SPS

HF: Silvagni Casboult Charlie
F: Pickett Weitering Murphy

Int: Polson, Cuningham, Wright, Simpson
Em: Ed, McKay, Sumner, Graham

Backs: Can take a mix of talls and smalls, plenty of run, calm under pressure and reasonable ball use.
Mids: Speed, ball winning ability and elite users.
Forwards: Running power, strong marks, smart crumbers.
Int: Flexibility, speed and ball use.
Emerg: Will be pushing the others to hold their spots.

FB: Plowman A.Silvagni Williamson

C: Byrne Murphy Simpson
HF: Polson C.Curnow SPS
FF: J.Silvagni McKay Sumner

R: Kreuzer Cripps Gibbs

Surely Army gets a farewell game??
He might wind up being more of a chance to play in the second half of the season, he looks like he needed the bye. Only a handful of games though.

Smedts, Kerridge and likely Palmer have contracts for next year.

What i would like:

Byrne Weitering Pickett*
Doc Marchbank Plowman
Murphy Gibbs Simpson
C.Curnow McKay Fisher
J.SOS Cas Wright
Kru SPS Cripps
Cuningham E.Curnow Sumner Williamson

delist/retire: Simo, Armfield, Sheehan, Korcheck, JGM, Lamb, Palmer, Buckley, Galluci, Gorringe
next in line: Kez, Boeky, Jones, Smedts, Thomas, White, Jaksch, Graham
safe: ASOS, Polson, Kerr, Mcreadie, Rowe, LeBois

Pickett to a back pocket could be a game changer. Worth a run of games late to see how it goes. If anything, it still develops his game learning off the better small forwards in the league. If he could develop into a neville jetta type it fits a need so well. Obviously has more talent than Jetta, could play the lock down role and offer us run with byrne. I do hold hopes that he will develop into a midfielder though.

Byrne - Weitering - Plowman
Docherty - Marchbank - Pickett

Williamson - Cripps (1) - Cuningham
Kreuzer (3) - SPS (2) - Gibbs

Wright - McKay - Murphy (2)
Sumner - Casboult (3)- C.Curnow (1)

Simpson - LeBois - JSOS - E.Curnow
Emg: Macreadie - ASOS - Fisher/Polson

*Numbers represent main positional switches.

I didn't put Casboult in my team because if we know he won't be there next year, we may park him away, in the way we did Henderson.

LeBois has done nothing yet to say he'll be an AFL player, but he is that miraculous type, we'd love to have again. (Remember Betts)

Who would have believed we'd have up to 5 players from the 2016 draft involved in our teams? Unreal.

FB: Plowman - Weitering - Byrne
HB: Docherty - Marchbank - Sheehan
C: SPS - Cripps - Williamson
R: Kreuzer - Gibbs- Murphy
HF: Pickett - Casboult - C.Curnow

I: Polson - Cuningham - E. Curnow - Simpson

LeBois, Fisher, Macreadie, Kerr, ASOS, Wright (rested), BB, Lamb, Jaksch, Smedts, Phillips, Graham happy inclusions if in top form but a big VFL finals series from them all.
*Edit: should have included LJ here as per his current form and Buckley + Kerridge if his disposal improves dramatically.

Emerg: Kerr, LeBois, Wright (more to give a kid a go)

- obviously youth focussed
- ASOS will play plenty, loving what he brings
- Graham/Jones doing their chances of 1yr deals no harm
- Phillips back up ruck
- no Casboult as I think he's off (ditto Gibbs but we need our best mids playing every game)
- want Doc up the ground a bit more
- I'd love Sheehan to get a shot, that's a wait and see for mine
- the rest are depth only (with a year left on contracts) or on very thin ice

Every time I read this, I always seem to think about Dave Chappelle as Rick James. :p

I hope both ASOS & Casboult are there for another 2-3 years

Need to support the young KPs coming through with mature bodies + they both are playing pretty good footy !!
