Autopsy Round 23 vs Essendon

Melbourne supporter who watched this game to see how Jack Watt's played. I've been a Watts supporter (brother coached him at junior level) and really didn't want to see him go to another club. I've got to say, I'm not sure what he brings to your club and I really wish he'd find some mongrel in him. Unfair?

I'm a fan, but was dropped earlier this year for lack of defensive pressure, which is the measure by which all of our players are judged highest. He doesn't seem keen on the contest, but I'd love us to find the right role for him. He seems like a top bloke.

I'd like to know how Koch and KT felt at quarter time when the crowd booed our players.

Can't remember a boo as loud as that directed at our own.

3 more years....

It was sad watching Neade last night. Runs a mile, but is always 5 seconds to late to a contest.

He tries so hard, but just isn't AFL standard. His selection was both baffling and frustrating. Port needs to cut the cord.

Let him go

He is a really good user of the ball that's what he brings. Our forward entries have been diabolical for years. Unfortunately out whole forward setup has been terrible this year .Wingard barely got a touch playing g forward until we put him in the middle againsts Richmond.

He could be harder at it but we know how he plays by now. No surprises .
He brings precisely what we expected from him, but he needs an organized side around him. We weren't.

We couldn't see, but flashes of his skills with the ball. I wish we can use him more and better next season.

I maintain that Neade has been coached into oblivion buy a useless coach.

he isn't a forward.
hes been pencilled in as a small forward like sam gray, because they are small.
but reality is both play better under the ball, they just aren't big enough to do it at afl level.
our forward line is full of non-forwards, which doesn't help our scoring at all.

A shout-out to Paddy. Played the last two games in a lot of discomfort. All in the hope of getting his side into the finals.

He’s a tough, courageous player

Where was he when we needed him
against Eagles?

Final lot of midfield frequency stats for the season. If you haven't seen a previous post, this is an overall summary of how often players lined up as one of your 5 mids at bounces.

There were 34 bounces

Polec 24 (21w, 3i)
Boak 19 (13i, 6w)
Wines 19
Ebert 19 (3w)
SPP 18
Wingard 17 (1w)
Byrne-Jones 16 wing
Motlop 14 (10w, 4i)
R.Gray 13
Houston 6 wing
Watts 3 wing
Neade 1 wing
Westhoff 1 wing

Rucks:
Ryder 22
Frampton 11
Westhoff 1

Notes:
- Easily a season high for Boak in (13) analysed games this season. His previous season high was 9. The last time Boak finished as a top 6 mid, was Rd 13, 2017
- Wingard didn't start inside at all in the first and only had the 1 wing start for the term.
- The vast majority of Gray's starts were in the last - he was on 4 until late in the 3rd.
- Very odd to see 22 wing starts taken by backs given you weren't playing an extra one.

I am a believer in leading by example, so that means the captain should have good skills, not just an off field leader.
So with that I would make Wingard captain, may be unpopular but some one that is capable of lifting a side
Agree re skill being very desirable quality. That suggestion is left field but we definitely need something different.

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but Frampton's return of 4 contested marks, 1 goal (probably should've had another) and a concerted chop-out for Ryder - who himself played his best game in ages - while Westhoff got to stay forward and dob 5, might've vindicated just how duncey our selection metrics are.

And Jake Neade's return of 8 disposals and 0.2 (both scoring shots from free kicks) vindicated that further.

I maintain that Neade has been coached into oblivion buy a useless coach.

Nah. Someone like Jack Watts has been coached into oblivion. Neade just isn't up to it. Alistair McHale couldn't turn him into a quality AFL player.

The bombers played 2 loose defenders all night. We ended up playing a 7 man forward line at times to even it up a bit, and the roll on effect was that we had a defender usually Houston starting on the wing, to not leave their wingman unattended.

Absolutely correct GP, players like Watts are the icing, not the cake.
Used correctly in a properly set up forward line he can kick goals, and set them up as well.

I didn't understand the selection in 1st place...why drop Bonner and AJ...could have tried Bonner on the wing

No doubt that he's a ripping bloke and there's no doubt he'll be a success after football. Probably doesn't help you right now. But as a couple mentioned, find the right spot and he'll be a great acquisition.

Crows win by a hunj with nothing to play for and a few key outs.

Port lose to Essendon dismally after playing like they don't give a **** right from the outset.

Our players haven't got the competitive juices to win **** all.

That final place could have been filled by just about anyone else on our list. At least we could have tried someone else to see whether they should be delisted. Couldn't do worse than Neade.

To be fair, the situations were vastly different.

We were looking set for a decent finals tilt only weeks ago but have crashed back to earth in short order. Back to back heart breakers destroyed the spirit of the team. They had nothing left to give. All they could muster up was enough effort after quarter time to make sure we didn't lose by 100 ourselves.

The Crows have known their season to be cooked for a while now so have well and truly got into the habit of playing for pride. Plus they were playing against Carlton, it's not like it's too difficult to beat up on them if you're even half interested.

Last night wasn't great but I'm not losing any sleep over it. The preceding 21 weeks give me much greater cause for concern.

Port is a frustrating team to watch but what takes the cake for me is seeing Port kick the ball to Neade in a marking contest. I can remember three occasions where it happened on Friday night.

You don’t have to be a football Einstein to know that’s not going to work.

Was a very pointed showing to them of just how the usually silent majority was feeling about what we were serving up.

It's a lesson that Ken hasn't learned in - what is it now - 6 years?

We even managed to kick a goal from one where Neade brought it to ground and Westhoff snapped through from 50. Off a centre square clearance so relatively undirected but still.
