Another huge game, win and we wrap up a spot in the top 4.

Outs- Jarrod Berry(inj), Eric Hipwood(inj?)

Ins- Kai Lohmann, Ty Gallop(if).

Halfway through last night I was wanting Sam Day to be subbed off and omitted for this game but he showed a big improvement in the 2nd half, ended up with 5 marks and a couple were good contested grabs around the attacking 50 meter arc.

If we want someone with marking power and endurance in the wing rotation similar to Berry maybe we move Fletcher up to the wing.

If Hippy is out and we want to stick with the same amount of talls Gallop is the only option IMO.

Shame we have to win this one to guarantee us a home final / possible top 4, otherwise I’d just be trotting out the reserves. The way we’re going right now we’d pick up an injury walking to our letterbox.

Not sure on the changes other than Bez being out and possibly Eric. I do know Bailey has to play midfield though. He could be a real wildcard in that position in finals.

Out: Berry (inj), Hipwood, Beeken
In: Robertson, Gallop, Lohmann

If there’s one thing we should have learned from the loss to Sydney, it’s that you try to replace ‘like with like’ when covering injuries.

With Berry out, I would bring Robertson straight in to play his role. Moving players around to cover him just weakens a formula that was a winning one against Fremantle. The post match vision last night indicated that Hipwood must be injured. He was terrible last night and definitely needs a freshen up. Only three disposals for the game, two in the first, one in the second and zero in the last half. Didn’t look like taking a mark in the forward line and went goalless again. Gallop in for Hipwood. He can’t be any worse. Lohmann comes in for Beeken and we have a think about our sub. Choice of Sub will be hard, but maybe we go with Gallop and see if we can’t get by up forward with Ah Chee, Rayner and Morris as making forwards.

The other alternative to Gallop would be to look at Joyce as an additional tall defender to help combat Hawthorn’s four tall forwards. Andrews and Lester are rock solid in defence, but Gardiner’s limitations are starting to become glaring. Until Fagan made the move and put Lester on Treacy, Fremantle were playing through Gardiner’s man because he was the weakest link and the Treacy mismatch looked like it was going to hurt us. Hawthorn would have taken notice and you can expect whoever Gardiner lined up on to be their ‘go to’ target.

IMO the Swans loss was more about our mindset than anything to do with Chris Fagan's selection strategy.

I think both played a part, Malice.
Bringing Smith and McLauchlan into the team were poor decisions in my view.
Two rucks don’t work
And McLauchlan for Neale…
Well… it didn’t work out.
But I agree our mindset was an important factor

I agree, it was MORE about mindset, but the selection strategy was off as we scrambled to cover injuries.

Lohmann in for Berry. I'd move Ah Chee up to the wing to cover Berry, and play Lohmann up forward. Issue is we lose Ah Chee's abilities as a defensive forward, and the rest of the forwards are pretty attacking.

But it does mean we don't impact our defensive structure which stood up well with Lester and Starcevich back.

This has merit. What would you do with Hipwood and how do we respond to the Hawks playing four talls? Lots to work out this week.

Is Beecken a chance to come in and play the same role as Berry? Does his running capacity allow it? The main concern I have with losing Berry is his two way running, in a team not always known for it, coupled with an already depleted defence personnel wise.

It’s for this reason I’d also be reluctant to move Jaspa back into that role. Kid’s a gun down back and is also underrated defensively. Feel like offensively we lose his kicking ability by going back to the wing where we don’t use the position all that much.

I reckon Fletcher would have the best attributes to do what Berry does, both with running but also a taller bigger wing.

But as you said he has become a vital piece of our defence. Id almost have him as the Zorko replacement for distribution over Coleman at the moment

I guess you could bring Beecken in and have him and Jaspa interchanging. Jaspa is good absolutely anywhere.

I would also be keen to give Gallop a run in place of Hipwood. A baptism of fire for sure but what are the alternatives? We could go small but McLachlan has not set the world on fire up a level and I don't think you could go with Day AND McInerney/Smith/Fort as your KPFs in addition to Morris.

Another option they may consider (not my preferred option) would be Gardiner forward as a more senior body and then Joyce in. Joyce was emergency so hes potentially the "next in" key position player

Hope Bez can be back for finals but he plays such a vital role in the air floating back, would have to think he’ll find that tough to do with his shoulder.

I think Jaspa has to cover that wing spot, reckon we can probably cover him behind the ball with Wilmot, Zorko and Beecken. Also give him a license to go wherever he wants while we’ve got the ball.

Just thinking out loud but wonder if we can pair Jaspa and Marshall together. Jaspa on the wing in defence, in offence Jaspa plays a high half forward that just finds the ball similar to how Bailey was playing on the weekend. Marshall can play the high half forward while defending but moves to the wing structurally while we’ve got the ball

I don't know how often all four would be in the same forward line, especially given they play three small forwards as well (Ginnivan, Watson, Moore). When they do, I'd probably play Starcevich on the fourth tall.
